Narration is gentle, intimate as is the story of a young actress and the man who first stole her heart set in the year of the Pandemic when her 3 children are home, picking cherries with her and their father. What to say and what to withhold when relating our young lives to our children. Here is the added drama of a movie star and all the fantasies that follow him.

Haunting end

I keep wanting narrator to be the protagonist but this story is about his sister and the house that dominated their lives. A thoughtful meditative book enhanced by Tom Hanks voice, it left me satisfied yet wanting more.

Haunting & eerily true to life

Violence begins Katie’s story and beauty ends it. The horrific deaths of her parents, children and later, her husband send Katie into solitary existence near a mysterious island that harbors a malevolent alien force. While the author adds commentary applying to the world’s current social and political climate, characters are solid and inventive.

Twist on murder mystery- no one can be murdered

Futuristic mystery set in Chicago with bows to Chicago of the past and present. Criminals are forced to get creative when murder becomes physically impossible. Darker side of human tendencies shown with a light almost humorous touch. I’ll look for more from author John Scalzi. Read well with no clumsy attempts to create odd accents or voices.

Information better used in physical copy

Narration is dull. Since this book gives clear instructions in how to avoid common errors, a physical copy of this book would provide usable content. I doubt I will listen again and take notes in order to cull checklists from this book. I’ll find a library copy.

Amazing Middle Grade Mystery for Adults too

Video diary format in first person puts listener into the confusing twists of a great plot. Suspicion comes in complex layers. Audio performance is perfectly appropriate to characters and ages.

Honest vulnerability in writing & reading

Tim’s asides are great - from the warning that the next section is not for children’s ears to his confessed intention to skip unpronounceable place & people names in a historical portion.
I received a physical copy direct from the author, but I’m glad I purchased the audio & encountered his words spoken first. He gives tools to help our own striving but reminds us through his story that we need to understand the core of why we strive. Do you have something to share or something to prove? Letting go of anxiety is worth the word of chipping away the layers. Thanks, Tim.

Central character is not elephant. Narrator figures out mystery but remains timid in his life. In 41 minutes there can be character growth. Absent here.
