How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Not what I expected but very relevant
Revisado: 06-11-20
Just how well can we read in the responses of others what is true of their motives and intentions. A lot less than we think. This is a fascinating book that explores what happens when people's demeanor do not match society's expectations for how they should act in a given setting. It gets very practical ending on the systemic thinking/training that is driving today's aggressive policing. Highly recommended, especially right now.

The timeless original text; required listening for anyone interested in strategy. This is a work of subtlety and paradox that shows the way to a clean and aesthetic triumph. Sun Tzu insisted that a skilled warrior observes, calculates, outwits, and outmaneuvers an adversary, and in doing so averts the destruction of battle.

second half of book is flute music?
first half is interesting though it reads like a well thought out bullet point outline for battles.

Imagine living with a fear so visceral each day that simply walking down the street draws terror to one’s core. That’s the best case scenario for a woman on the streets of Juárez, Mexico. Kate del Castillo (La Reina del Sur) delivers a stunning one-woman performance that transports listeners from a New York stage to the treacherous streets of Juárez, Mexico, where thousands of women have been murdered in an ongoing epidemic of violence.

On the morning of April 26, 1986, Europe witnessed the worst nuclear disaster in history: the explosion of a reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Soviet Ukraine. Dozens died of radiation poisoning, fallout contaminated half the continent, and thousands fell ill. In Chernobyl, Serhii Plokhy draws on new sources to tell the dramatic stories of the firefighters, scientists, and soldiers who heroically extinguished the nuclear inferno. He lays bare the flaws of the Soviet nuclear industry....

A disaster in review
Revisado: 11-18-19
I knew very little about this disaster prior to this book. It was a fascinating, even if at times a little plodding by the end, overview of the situation leading up to, the disaster itself and the fallout: political, social, ecological, and medical. It seems we often have no idea how dangerous our overconfidence is becoming until it melts down on our face. The author does a nice job in refraining from easy, neat answers.

Historia
A lifelong pursuit of knowing God should embody the Christian's existence. According to eminent theologian J.I. Packer, however, Christians have become enchanted by modern skepticism and have joined the "gigantic conspiracy of misdirection" by failing to put first things first. Knowing God aims to redirect our attention to the simple, deep truth that to know God is to love His Word.

A modern Classic
Revisado: 11-01-19
I can see why so many have found this book so helpful over the decades. I really appreciate the gentle, direct way the author confronts his reader with truth. I especially enjoyed his coverage of God's severity, God as Father as the essential and distinctly Christian view of God as well as the author's careful unpacking of the significance and application of our adoption.

Historia
In one life-changing moment, the lives of the Jewish exiles in Babylon are thrown into confusion and despair when a decree arrives from the king's palace in Susa. It calls for the annihilation of every Jewish man, woman, and child throughout the empire on the 13th day of Adar, in less than one year. Ezra, a quiet Jewish scholar and teacher, is suddenly called upon to lead the community as they seek God for a reason for this catastrophe.

helpful and familiar
Revisado: 08-05-19
I liked how the author keeps the focus on the Jews who would be returning with Ezra rather than try to bounce around between an Esther storyline. The wrestling between law and mercy is real. The ending however fits the genre's expectation whilst only giving a passing head nod to all the other lives that didn't end so nicely. But by and large it's a nice though familiar presentation of the 2nd return.

If you haven't yet seen the Netflix original movie by the same name, you owe it to yourself to do that asap. This book gives more detail, background and nuance to the story as you would expect. It will inspire you with the question, what am I doing with the vast wealth of resources entrusted to me? And you will grieve over the injustice of the plight of those caught in the cycle of poverty and under the control of corrupt governments.

Historia
In this intriguing business novel, which illustrates state-of-the-art economic theory, Alex Rogo is a UniCo plant manager whose factory and marriage are failing. To revitalize the plant, he follows piecemeal advice from an elusive former college professor who teaches, for example, that reduction in the efficiency of some plant operations may make the entire operation more productive. Alex's attempts to find the path to profitability and to engage his employees in the struggle involve the listener; and thankfully the authors' economic models.

While I have almost no interest in the specific field of inventory/process management, as the preface suggests, this book models how to teach engagingly through narrative. Incredible. The voice cast was top notch.

Fantastic and Enlightening
Revisado: 07-11-19
From Ada Loveless to Sergie and Larry, this book weaves a near 200 year tale of where we've come in relation to computer technology. Definitely high level, but it filled in some personal gaps on the development of TCP/IP and the development and growth of the internet. The author even covers the actual role Al Gore played in the bills that did shape the online system we take for granted today.
