Historia
In 1912, scientist Marie Curie spent two months on the British seaside at the home of Hertha Ayrton, an accomplished mathematician, inventor, and suffragette. At the time, Curie was in the throes of a scandal in France over her affair with Paul Langevin, which threatened to overshadow the accomplishment of her second Nobel Prize. Performed by Kate Mulgrew and Francesca Faridany at the Minetta Lane Theatre, this play by Lauren Gunderson is an ode to two remarkable women.

Revisado: 12-18-19
I didn’t know those facts about the lives of these pioneering women, I regret to say. Thank you, Audible, for re-introducing these women in such a relatable light. We need more of this!

True Cheryl fan
Revisado: 12-18-19
I, too, have struggled with heroine addiction and fancy myself an unpublished writer, even though I get paid to do accounting...I know I have a book in me, and ever time I listen to Cheryl’s work, I feel that much closer to cranking it out. Thanks Cheryl...please keep cranking them out...

Not Her Best
Revisado: 10-06-19
I’m a Patricia Cornwell fan from way back...think Kay Scarpetta. In spite of my initial impression, this work did not see the birth of a new Scarpetta; Although, that is, apparently, what she likely had intended. At any rate, I won’t be following this series if that’s what this was...there were definitely parallels that left the reader wishing this was just that...another Scarpetta novel. But, hey...a writer’s gotta write...I just won’t be jumping on this bandwagon. The ending was confusing and somewhat disappointing. She could’ve done more in that respect. Just, nah...

Historia
Beloved author Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction with a unique love story set in the New York City theater world during the 1940s. Told from the perspective of an older woman as she looks back on her youth with both pleasure and regret (but mostly pleasure), City of Girls explores themes of female sexuality and promiscuity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of true love. In 1940, nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris has just been kicked out of Vassar College, owing to her lackluster freshman-year performance.

A little clarity, a lot of confusion
Revisado: 09-26-19
My first thought was that I hated it...nothing about it reminded me of the Elizabeth Gilbert I laid on the bathroom floor to console and fell in love...However, this story resonates. It is EG’s contribution to taking the female sexuality double standard by the horns and kicking it in the balls. I decided books like this, uncensored in all its vulgar glory, by women respected by the masses is one of the most effective ways to address the way people generally view women with a sex life or even just a sordid past. The narrative also held a mirror up and allowed me to realize that the disappointment and disgust was thanks to what I saw in myself that V represented. While her character’s belt notch numbers dwarf mine (which I think is also strategic...’hell, at least I wasn’t THAT bad’...it’s for those of us who got a bit carried away at the introduction of sex into our clueless live but were handed our perfunctory scarlet letter...never able to fully recover our reputation but didn’t even compare to the V’s sheer numbers in our real pasts; even still, we often don’t want to be reminded of the subsequent shame that we merely covered up by trying to our best adulting to try and make up for having had sex lives. I could not, however, relate to the comfort V was in relation to her body and sexuality, from even her 1st encounter. We proper Southern women were trained to feel shame always and to the end of time.
And, at least she is writing a book. While I all-in-all regret the whole experience, her talent at writing narrative spilled over into my writing, which is still becoming.

This book is extremely well-written. The characters are believable and relatable. The plot solid and unpredictable but remains plausible. I really enjoyed this ‘read’. Would definitely recommend...there is something for everyone.

A fascinating, fully engaging, smart, insightful, breath-taking look into the life of a protagonist that interacts with her world in such a way as to invite outsiders to see Muslim people not living in countries where Islam is fully celebrated as a way of life. So very humanizing, captivating, and so unexpectedly perfect...

I Liked His Earlier Works Better
Revisado: 02-03-18
I enjoyed his story telling and admire what he gets to do for his job. He is a great writer. I just thought he kind of played out the “others” concept to the point of nausea on this one. I get it, but it got a bit cumbersome to make it to the end.
