Historia
I've had to move out of the city and into the house I inherited here, in the idyllic fishing village of Porthcove, but only for as long as it takes to sell it. You see, I need the money, so I've started seeing some of the locals, you know, as patients, but I tell you, there's something really disturbing about charming neighbors sharing chilling secrets. And it isn't just that. It's the other things. Strange, inexplicable things. It started with odd smells, creepy sounds, and then the intruders...oh God, the intruders.

Very slow starter…
Revisado: 04-04-25
It takes literally 70% of the book (chapter 29) for anything interesting to happen. It’s not remotely scary or supernatural, which was what I was expecting. It is a psychological thriller which in itself I find interesting except for the fact that it’s a real slog with a deeply unlike able character. It would benefit hugely from some editing. I chose this book because of listening to an excellent short story by this author on a Podcast. That story was very well written and scary and was linked to this same Haunted series. I may give the second book in the series a try in the hope it will be something like the short story… after I recover from the exhaustion of this one.
Narrator was mostly very good, apart from some very odd pronunciation of common words at times (and I don’t mean American/British differences.). Nobody pronounces these words that way.

Werewolf perfection.
Revisado: 11-17-24
I grew up on some of the best werewolf movies ever made: Silver Bullet, the Howling, American Werewolf in London, other classics. I’m a total werewolf horror junkie and have listened to many of the books on here with very mixed experiences. I can say this is absolutely the best werewolf audiobook on here.
The time and setting are unique and immersive. The creature is classic and correct in its origin and form. None of this hairless werewolf nonsense or other unnecessary abominations. The main characters are likable and relatable. Best of all, no unnecessary wokeness or social commentary to ruin the experience—Just pure werewolf terror and suspense.
Huge props to the narrator for an excellent job creating a variety of voices and accents.

Great Big Foot story with a fast pace, lots of thrills and best of all, NO MESSAGE. I listen to and read horror to be scared and go on an adventure, not to have an agenda shoved on me. Bravo. This was excellent.

Katmai National Park: 7,000 square miles of rugged, isolated wilderness in southern Alaska. Vast stretches of frozen tundra, deep ancient forests, and impassable ravines ruled by the massive volcanic God, Devil's Desk. Despite the vigorous protests of Michael, the Talbots and the Tynes head to the park for a much-needed vacation away from it all.

I’m an avid creature feature fan and hoped all the rave reviews were accurate. Unfortunately, despite some funny dialogue, this is pretty slow paced. I quit listening after I was thoroughly confused by the “Porgy” character, thinking there two of them…. Finally it dawned on me that the author was using plural pronouns for a single person. I don’t have time for that nonsense. Another wasted credit.

Historia
Off the coast of New Zealand, there's an underwater mining facility 8,000 feet under the ocean. The crew stationed there knows that drowning is the least of their worries at such depths. That's why they panic when a maintenance member goes missing while out on a repair mission. There's something far worse down there than the crushing pressure, the ticking timers on their oxygen tanks, and the everlasting darkness that inhabits such depths. And it's hunting them one by one.

Great story ruined by terrible narration
Revisado: 09-06-24
The narrator continuously mispronounces common words and has a very odd cadence. I’m usually not very particular about narrators, but this is one of the worst I’ve heard. Some sentences seem to be mistranslated as well? For example “he continually pounded the roots of his hands on his helmet”. Roots? I think the author meant palms. Love this author, but please be more particular with your choice of narrator. The wrong one can spoil the whole story.

Four brand-new horror novellas all about books, stories, manuscripts—the written word has never had sharper teeth. In The Skin of Her Teeth, a cursed novel drives people to their deaths. A delivery job turns deadly in The Dark Brothers' Last Ride. In This Book Belongs to Olo, a lonely child has dangerous control over an usual pop-up book. A choose-your-own adventure game spirals into an uncanny reality in The Story. Full of creepy suspense, these collected novellas are perfect for fans of Paul Tremblay, Stephen King, and Joe Hill.

To eight-year-old Bela, her family is her world. There’s Mommy, Daddo, and Grandma Ruth. But there is also Other Mommy, a malevolent entity who asks her every day: “Can I go inside your heart?” When horrifying incidents around the house signal that Other Mommy is growing tired of asking Bela the question over and over, Bela understands that unless she says yes, her family will soon pay. Other Mommy is getting restless, stronger, bolder. Only the bonds of family can keep Bela safe, but other incidents show cracks in her parents’ marriage. The safety Bela relies on is about to unravel.

Child’s voice narrates the ENTIRE novel.
Revisado: 08-06-24
Bella’s voice is grating and her narration becomes really tedious in short order. Slowing the speed down to 85 makes it somewhat more tolerable.
I did manage to finish the entire novel because of all the reviews stating how scary it was and I loved Bird Box so I had high hopes. Unfortunately, this is more a novel of family drama and a deeply flawed, narcissistic mother than anything else. The “thing” in the closet is only marginally scary and doesn’t really do that much until the last chapter where its actions are totally predictable.
An ok listen if you can tolerate the kid voice and manner of speech for 8 hours and are easy to unnerve. Reading the novel might be a way better option.

Not bad, but way too much time spent on her personal life.
Revisado: 04-20-24
I enjoyed the chapters about treating animals and the sometimes unusual characters she encountered. Unfortunately, a lot of the book is taken up with overly long chapters about her injuries/sickness/recoveries and her irresponsible love life with its resulting consequences and hardships all the while banging the drum of feminism and repeatedly saying how independent and gritty she is, All the while her poor parents have to care for her daughter so she can continue to work. Nothing very independent about that. There are better veterinary memoirs.

In the summer of 1985, a brilliant young British DNA scientist Helena Greenwood is found murdered in her front garden in a quiet suburb in California. The police believe they know the killer’s identity but there’s no evidence against him, and the only thing linking him to the crime is the fact he’d been charged with sexually assaulting Helena just a few months previously.

Revisado: 02-10-24
The author is very biased against the criminal justice system and a bleeding heart for convicts. Who else besides the convicted killer would want to kill Helena? She never addresses this obvious question in amongst all the emoting, sniffling and crying. You would think they could edit those sounds out. Anyhow, there’s no resolution at the end.

Excellent historical account for true crime enthusiasts!
Revisado: 01-23-24
I have no idea what the negative reviews are going on about. This would make a great documentary for lovers of law and order and its many changes over time. I can only guess they are objecting to people’s descriptions including their race? Or the fact that law enforcement broke up communist groups? There’s zero racist content in this book. Narration is perfect and he would be the choice for any tv documentary on this subject.
