I just finished listening to all of Willy Vlautins books on audio in a row. The Horse being the 1st and Don’t Skip Out On Me being the last
I am familiar with the authors sense of melancholy and bad things happening to his characters, but usually there is a glimpse of hope at the end
All his novels have upset me-he really does a great job of developing characters and making you care about them.
This book floored me.
Ugh! Why?
Great author, great job of narration by the author, great story. But that ending!
Now I am going to listen to a self help book!

This was my 3rd Willy Vlautin book in a row, and so far my favorite
You have a lot of hope for Charlie, even though his life is tough and bad things happen to him, he seems like he is going to be ok in the end.
He is the least messed up character in the books I have listened to so far
Willy Vlautin has a gift for introducing you to the seedier elements of life, and making you really feel for the characters. His narrations are perfect.

This is my 4th Willy Vlautin book in a row, and I think I need to take a break before I get any more depressed!
I love his stories. They are so well written and it’s a real treat when he narrates them himself
The characters in this book are really down and out. They are a mess to start with, and their bad decisions just keep digging them in deeper.
Still the author brings out the good with the bad, and you can’t help really feeling for the people in the story.
With Willy Vlautin, just when you think it can’t get any worse, it does. But he leaves you with a sliver of hope at the end.

The author did an incredible job of narration.
The tale was haunting, depressing, yet ever hopeful
I was deeply moved by the story and how well it was spoken

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

This would be a book better read than listened to because the story is rambling with more characters than I could keep up with. At least a book you can turn back pages to remind yourself who is who and what's going on.I was still so confused at the end that I am listening to it over again. Problem is, I don't really care what's happening! None of the characters stand out or are likeable.

Has Into the Water turned you off from other books in this genre?

Loved Girl on the Train. Not so thrilled with Into the Water.
