Historia
Horace Hopper is a half-Paiute, half-Irish ranch hand who wants to be somebody. He's spent most of his life on the ranch of his kindly guardians, Mr. and Mrs. Reese, herding sheep alone in the mountains. But while the Reeses treat him like a son, Horace can't shake the shame he feels from being abandoned by his parents. He decides to leave the only loving home he's known to prove his worth by training to become a boxer.

Now I need therapy
Revisado: 04-13-25
I just finished listening to all of Willy Vlautins books on audio in a row. The Horse being the 1st and Don’t Skip Out On Me being the last
I am familiar with the authors sense of melancholy and bad things happening to his characters, but usually there is a glimpse of hope at the end
All his novels have upset me-he really does a great job of developing characters and making you care about them.
This book floored me.
Ugh! Why?
Great author, great job of narration by the author, great story. But that ending!
Now I am going to listen to a self help book!

Historia
Willy Vlautin's award-winning novel Lean on Pete, a moving and compassionate story about a 15-year-old boy's unlikely connection to a failing racehorse as he struggles to find a place to call home - now a major motion picture from A24, the studio behind Moonlight and Lady Bird. Fifteen-year-old Charley Thompson wants a home, food on the table, and a high school he can attend for more than part of a year. But as the son of a single father working in warehouses across the Pacific Northwest, Charley's been pretty much on his own.

My favorite
Revisado: 04-05-25
This was my 3rd Willy Vlautin book in a row, and so far my favorite
You have a lot of hope for Charlie, even though his life is tough and bad things happen to him, he seems like he is going to be ok in the end.
He is the least messed up character in the books I have listened to so far
Willy Vlautin has a gift for introducing you to the seedier elements of life, and making you really feel for the characters. His narrations are perfect.

With "echoes of Of Mice and Men" (The Bookseller, UK), The Motel Life explores the frustrations and failed dreams of two Nevada brothers - on the run after a hit-and-run accident - who, forgotten by society, and short on luck and hope, desperately cling to the edge of modern life.

Gut wrenching
Revisado: 04-05-25
This is my 4th Willy Vlautin book in a row, and I think I need to take a break before I get any more depressed!
I love his stories. They are so well written and it’s a real treat when he narrates them himself
The characters in this book are really down and out. They are a mess to start with, and their bad decisions just keep digging them in deeper.
Still the author brings out the good with the bad, and you can’t help really feeling for the people in the story.
With Willy Vlautin, just when you think it can’t get any worse, it does. But he leaves you with a sliver of hope at the end.

Historia
Al Ward lives on an isolated mining claim in the high desert of central Nevada fifty miles from the nearest town. A grizzled man in his sixties, he survives on canned soup, instant coffee, and memories of his ex-wife, friends and family he’s lost, and his life as a touring musician. Hampered by insomnia, bouts of anxiety, and a chronic lethargy that keeps him from moving back to town, Al finds himself teetering on the edge of madness and running out of reasons to go on—until a horse arrives on his doorstep: nameless, blind, and utterly helpless.

The author did an incredible job of narration.
The tale was haunting, depressing, yet ever hopeful
I was deeply moved by the story and how well it was spoken

Historia
A single mother turns up dead at the bottom of the river that runs through town. Earlier in the summer, a vulnerable teenage girl met the same fate. They are not the first women lost to these dark waters, but their deaths disturb the river and its history, dredging up secrets long submerged. Left behind is a lonely 15-year-old girl. Parentless and friendless, she now finds herself in the care of her mother's sister, a fearful stranger who has been dragged back to the place she deliberately ran from - a place to which she vowed she'd never return.

Disjointed and hard to follow
Revisado: 05-16-17
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
This would be a book better read than listened to because the story is rambling with more characters than I could keep up with. At least a book you can turn back pages to remind yourself who is who and what's going on.I was still so confused at the end that I am listening to it over again. Problem is, I don't really care what's happening! None of the characters stand out or are likeable.
Has Into the Water turned you off from other books in this genre?
Loved Girl on the Train. Not so thrilled with Into the Water.
