Product placement is alive and well 🙁
Revisado: 04-16-25
I was looking for a decent story with a good narrator to have on in the background while I worked, and this one fit the bill. That said, I found myself distracted by how often characters were described as lighting up. I’m not anti-smoking, but the repetition felt deliberate and a bit gratuitous. It left me wondering whether the frequent references were a form of product placement.

I color this one beige.
Revisado: 01-26-25
Sooooo unimaginable. It’s like the author was walking along pointing to things he saw…”there’s a door” “… there’s the sky” “… there’s some zombies”. If ratings were colors, I’d paint this one beige. If my adult child had written this, the best I could say is “Well dear, your grammar is correct.” Didn’t hear a single creative or surprising thing in the 3 hrs I wasted listening to this. I gave it a 2 instead of 1 because, well…the books are finished. And that’s something.

Characters, plot, pacing, all of it made for a great ride. There were a couple of times when I thought I knew what was coming next… and then I was pleasantly surprised.

Historia
What happens when an old spook loses his mind? Does the Service have a retirement home for aging spies who can no longer remember their secrets are secret? Or are senile spies taken care of in a different, more permanent fashion? These are the paranoid concerns of David Cartwright, a Cold War–era operative and one-time head of MI5 who is sliding into dementia, and questions his grandson, River, must answer now that the spy who raised him sometimes forgets to wear pants. But River, himself an agent at Slough House, MI5’s outpost for disgraced spies, has other things to worry about.

LOVE the ideas in this book
Revisado: 11-14-23
There’s a fine line between imaginative writing and just making stuff up. Unfortunately, I was left feeling like Koontz was just making stuff up. I say unfortunately because I hung on until the end hoping for book to touch down and connect to something that would justify all the belief it asks you to suspend… it did not for me.

Historia
From the author of Fight Club, the classic portrait of the damaged contemporary male psyche, now comes this novel about the apocalyptic marketing possibilities of female pleasure. Beautiful You is Palahniuk's much-anticipated satire of the emerging erotic thriller genre, a mash-up of mommy porn and chick lit à la Sex and the City, and fantasy lit à la Clan of the Cave Bear. Imagine if Ira Levin had a baby with Jean Auel.

Revisado: 10-31-23
Very much appreciated the cultural diversity of the main character’s circle of family and friends. But I really expected more from the storyline. Where’s line between genre adherence and formulaic writing? I don’t know. What I do know is that not much about this story surprised me.
