It was like listening to friends telling their most interesting stories. Portraits of people and events, tales of friendships and romantic relationships - both good and bad. Beautifully written and read. I really enjoyed it.

Funny but serious. Empathy rules.
Revisado: 01-16-25
I started listening for the amusing snarky workplace commentary but the book took a much deeper turn. I quickly became invested in the characters’ lives and secrets and actually felt a bit stressed by it all and listened longer than intended to see what happened next. The book deals with bullying and depression and some very serious real life problems. It reminds us we often don’t know what’s truly going on with others and of the power of empathy.
The narrator was excellent. Give it a listen!

I’ve got a list of people I absolutely don’t ever want to be stuck with on a boat, or a plane, or a train, and it starts and ends with the broody, grumpy, too-sexy-for-my-own good Axel Huxley. Also known as this romance novelist’s number one nemesis. The man is legendary for his mighty pen and his even mightier scowl. I tried to work together with the cocky thriller writer once upon a time, but the two of us are like vodka and good decisions. We don’t play well together.

Couldn’t finish
Revisado: 08-17-24
I don’t like to give negative reviews but in this one I really disliked the conflict. Seemed contrived. One honest conversation would have cleared everything up. Sex scenes were kind of cringy - didn’t feel sexy. Definitely needed headphones. Made it half way through the story then jumped to the final chapter and epilogue. Was glad to delete it.

Historia
In the wake of an environmental catastrophe, January, once a principal in London's Royal Ballet, has become a refugee in Tharsis, the terraformed colony on Mars. There, January’s life is dictated by his status as an Earthstronger—a person whose body is not adjusted to lower gravity and so poses a danger to those born on, or naturalized to, Mars. January’s job choices, housing, and even transportation are dictated by this second-class status, and now a xenophobic politician named Aubrey Gale is running on a platform that would make it all worse.

Phenomenal!
Revisado: 07-12-24
I don’t listen to a lot of sci-fi but was intrigued by the description when it was listed as the deal of the day. What an incredible listen! Amazing world building that beautifully incorporates themes of fear, empathy, immigration, nationalism, politics, reliance on technology, class and gender. I loved the linguistic discussions, too. I raved about this book, recommending it to friends and family, even while I was in the middle of it. The narrator is perfect. He has a gorgeous, melodic voice and his English and American accents are a delight to listen to. I know I will listen to it again.

In this wise, witty, hilarious new novel, we follow the Kettle sisters through their 33rd year, as they struggle to survive their divorced parents' dating each other, their technologically savvy grandmother, a cheating husband, champagne hangovers, and the fabulous, frustrating life of forever being part of a threesome.

I love this book
Revisado: 02-02-24
The book is so well written and expertly performed. It handles dark topics with a humor that keeps the book entertaining and not depressing. Somehow Moriarty is able to make the characters both larger than life and relatably real. I read the book before I listened to it and I think Wilds’ performance enhances the experience. Each character has their own distinct voice, even the bystanders who regularly come into the story commenting on their impressions of the characters and the impact they had. It’s brilliant. Do yourself a favor and give it a listen.

A joy to read or listen to
Revisado: 10-30-23
I read this book when it came out. I waited a few months before listening to it. It is full of Katherine Center’s trademark warmth and joy. The main character went through struggles but consistently chose to act with empathy and enormous kindness. Treat yourself and listen to it.

I can’t believe I finished it
Revisado: 10-17-23
While they were free I listened to some of the Knitting in the City books. Dating-ish was my favorite. This was the final book in the series and my least favorite of those I listened to. The story seemed to drag on. The male narrator tried to use a Boston accent for Dan but it sounded more like he had a speech impediment. When the female narrator spoke for Dan, it reminded me of Bernie Sanders (which was especially off putting during sexy scenes). Also, narrators should look up the pronunciation of words or phrases that are unfamiliar instead of just winging it. For example, Sinn Fein.

I powered through but didn’t enjoy it. Story had a good setting and the premise of a cozy mystery book group investigating was intriguing. But the plot didn’t deliver. Motive not believable. It felt unfinished.

Compelling story with amazing narrator
Revisado: 07-01-23
The story depicts unimaginable suffering and cruelty but somehow is still uplifting due to the innate kindness of the main character. The author shows pieces of the main character’s life and cleverly links them to quiz show questions, and the narrator expertly brings all the different characters to life. I found it very compelling.
