Peter Frase argues that increasing automation and a growing scarcity of resources, thanks to climate change, will bring it all tumbling down. In Four Futures, Frase imagines how this postcapitalist world might look, deploying the tools of both social science and speculative fiction to explore what communism, rentism, socialism, and exterminism might actually entail.

A Biased Opinion of Four Futures
Revisado: 05-16-23
Though I have strong conservative, libertarian-leaning views, I try to be well-read on other perspectives to be sure I better understand all sides. This is one book I could not listen to though. The bias toward communism and against capitalism was clearly evident. I listened to about an hour of the book before I gave up on the possibility of something valuable coming out of it. I think there will be those who love this, but it will generally be those who share the same views as the author, as there's nothing impartial about the book.

Steven Levy's classic book traces the exploits of the computer revolution's original hackers - those brilliant and eccentric nerds from the late 1950s through the early '80s who took risks, bent the rules, and pushed the world in a radical new direction. With updated material from noteworthy hackers such as Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Richard Stallman, and Steve Wozniak, Hackers is a fascinating story that begins in early computer research labs and leads to the first home computers.

A Marvelous Winding Journey Through the Computer Revolution.
Revisado: 10-30-21
Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution: 25th Anniversary Edition is a marvelous journey winding through the key players that were instrumental in the development of these devices that have become an integral part of our lives today. Beginning at the very roots of the computer revolution and, in this edition, taking us all the way to today, you will hear stories of the early days when the personal computer was little more than a glimmer in the most radical hacker's eye, the development of the personal computer and the programs, the games that changed it all, and the integration into the business world. You'll learn of the hacker ethic, which is still alive in some today, though often manifested in a different way. And, if you're lucky enough, you'll feel your heart beat a bit faster when the story reaches points of familiarity.
Any person with curiosity about the computer revolution should add this to their reading list right now, especially those with an insatiatable curiosity to know the stories behind the story.
Finally, the audio version read by Mike Chamberland was well done and pleasant to listen to.

In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.

Gripping. Sobering. A Must Listen.
Revisado: 04-10-21
If you've heard of the Theranos saga, this book will tie up a lot of loose ends. If you haven't, this book will open your mind to the a world of deceit and power led by a woman who had an uncanny ability to convince very powerful people that everything was going well. In reality, Theranos was a well-run fraud that fooled many of the best.
While I bought the book to learn more, I found myself excitedly looking forward to listening more, and I'd recommend this to anyone.

Must Read for Email Sales
Revisado: 11-22-20
This short, to-the-point, engaging book should be handed to every aspiring salesperson, especially those who use email, though experienced salespeople who aren't happy with their numbers would certainly benefit from it. As Charlene gave examples of the various types of salespeople, I found myself shaking my head at many emails I recognized! Do all bad salespeople go to the same place to get their scripts?
My reaction to many of these salespeople is exactly as Charlene described, especially 'The Apologizer' and 'The Bridge Burner'. The folks who 'The Bridge Burner' most probably won't listen, but you need to be sure and eradicate any sign of this from your sales emails! She did a great job demonstrating the most common problems in a witty, humorous way. Speaking of humor, Charlene's sense of sense of humor was evident throughout the book, which was a bit of icing on the cake.
The only negative point I have is the narration. I like to listen to most audio books at 1.1x, and Tiana Hanson's voice came across robotic at this speed for some reason. When I slowed it down to 1.0x, it was good though, and Tiana seemed to really capture Charlene's voice in her narration of this.
It's a relatively quick listen - just add it to your library. You won't regret it.

Excellent Material with a Great Reminder
Revisado: 08-15-19
I thought Seth’s material was really good, and this will go into my set of resources that I’ll visit again. I was slightly disappointed with some of the pauses in the delivery, but this was rare and was easy to overlook. I was very pleased with Seth’s reminder that the goal isn’t to win the most you can in every deal, but to find the best deal for everyone, which makes negotiation work best for all of us in the end. His emphasis on the human component of this is really what makes this course shine, and was a great reminder that decimating someone else with your negotiation skills isn’t the goal.

This is a must-read book for anyone interested in how we got here
Revisado: 07-12-19
I have to admit, I was not expecting what I got with this book. I was expecting it to start in the 1970s or 1980s and give an overview of the fast-moving technological pace we’ve lived in for the last several decades. Truthfully, I nearly stopped the book because it started so far back, but I am glad I didn’t! Once I got into it, which didn’t take long, I found this very hard to quit listening to, and I learned a lot that had previously gone unnoticed in my life despite a strong technological background and education. I would consider this a must-read book for anyone interested in how we got to where we are.

Historia
Today, most doctors, dietitians, and even diabetes specialists consider type 2 diabetes to be a chronic and progressive disease - a life sentence with no possibility of parole. But the truth, as Dr. Fung reveals in this paradigm-shifting book, is that type 2 diabetes is reversible. Writing with clear, persuasive language, he explains why conventional treatments that rely on insulin or other blood-glucose-lowering drugs can actually exacerbate the problem, leading to significant weight gain and even heart disease.

Excellent Resource for Diabetics and Everyone Else
Revisado: 06-10-18
This is another great book by Dr. Jason Fung. When I found out about Dr. Fung’s work, I was stunned; the answer was not nearly as complicated as people made it out to be. Dr. Fung postulates that diabetes is indeed reversible, and the way to do this is simple: fasting. He does a nice job mixing information from studies and stories, which keep the book interesting, useful, and motivational.

What if the best way to grow your network isn't by introducing yourself to strangers at cocktail parties, handing out business cards, or signing up for the latest online tool, but by developing a better understanding of the existing network that's already around you? We know that it's essential to reach out and build your network. But did you know that it's actually your weaker or former contacts who will be the most helpful to you? Or that many of our best efforts at meeting new people simply serve up the same old opportunities we already have?

Reinforcing the Power of the Human Network
Revisado: 06-03-18
What I liked: Interesting stories, an appropriate amount of studies and facts, and plenty of suggestions for implementing suggestions in the book in your life. I also like the online resources that are available.
What I didn’t like: I can’t think of anything.
Quality of Narration: I didn’t care much for the narrator’s voice, but it didn’t take away from the material.
I found it interesting how much similarity there was in this book and ‘Givers and Takers’ by Adam Grant. I wouldn’t recommend them back-to-back like I listened to them. A bit of distance between the two might have helped reinforce the ideas without seeming as repetitive. I understand this was totally coincidental though.
The way relationships impact our lives is something we might all think we understand, but the stories and studies in this book reiterated how important they are. I’d recommend this book to anyone who wishes to better understand the relations between people and how you can be a better example of this.

By the end of on average day in the early 21st century, human beings searching the Internet will amass eight trillion gigabytes of data. This staggering amount of information - unprecedented in history - can tell us a great deal about who we are - the fears, desires, and behaviors that drive us, and the conscious and unconscious decisions we make. From the profound to the mundane, we can gain astonishing knowledge about the human psyche that less than 20 years ago seemed unfathomable.

Eye-Opening!
Revisado: 01-26-18
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in better understanding how to use data to make better decisions. While the book does not give a blueprint for doing this, it does present a convincing case that there are better ways to make decision than the traditional methods.
Any additional comments?
Though it shouldn't be bothersome to most adults, controversial sexual topics were presented throughout the book. Not being a specialist in data analysis, I found myself questioning whether some of the information presented was as accurate at predicting behaviors as presented, even so, I still found the material motivational to consider data in decision making, though best accompanied by human decision making.

Kept Hoping ...
Revisado: 05-16-17
What disappointed you about The 5 Second Rule?
I kept hoping this book would get better, but it seemed to me to be a very long drawn out explanation of the title with "proof" that mostly amounted to stories with absolutely no substance at all. The only real proof presented was a few studies which were referenced.
Would you ever listen to anything by Mel Robbins again?
Burn me once shame on you, burn me twice shame on me.
Which character – as performed by Mel Robbins – was your favorite?
n/a
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The 5 Second Rule?
Everything except a 30-second clip explaining the 5-second rule. It would still be a questionable book then.
Any additional comments?
The only good thing I can say about the book is the presentation of the book. Mel Robbins was quite conversational in her approach. Too bad there was almost no substance.
