Previous screenwriting books have all been helpful, but none presented a method of such simplicity that it could illuminate fundamental problems in a screenplay quickly and clearly. I’ve often finished books feeling they were too rigid, trying to present an infallible method. They tended to keep me bogged down in how to make all the points of the method work as prescribed, encouraging procrastination. Ironically, by providing a method that’s even more concise the result is more freedom, helping me move quickly and confidently into the most important aspect - the actual writing.

It’s undeniable that this book is most worthy of the lofty pedestal on which it’s been placed. Fitzgerald’s descriptions are a pure pleasure, and I found this performance of them equally so. I see some criticism in the comments, which I can only put down to individual taste, or if I dare, a lack of it. Having listened to a number of performances of the book - as much of each as I could manage that is - I believe this performance best captures the style of the language and shows the performer to have a deep understanding and experience of the writing, the era and the somewhat forgotten nuances of each. I’m inclined to listen to it again immediately. I recommend this performance, particularly for first time readers/listeners.

Very helpful, but needlessly complicated examples

I do like this book, but I don’t understand why the examples need to be soo complicated and unrealistic at times. Simple and relevant real-world examples would’ve been much more useful to me, rather than putting a common word in with a number of much less common words in a needlessly complicated example sentence. The narration is good though. Only as dry as is required for clarity of listening.

The best French learning audiobook out there

It’s soo nice to listen to a French audiobook that’s rooted in the real life French speaking, and that has an enjoyable human feel to it. I’d recommend this book to anyone learning French. I would only say that I wish it covered a little more vocabulary. I believe this is done to not overwhelm the learner, but rather, focus on the aspects that can be applied to as many circumstances as possible. I wish Paul Noble would release more French learning books!

There’s a lot of great content in this book. Very expansive, with a lot of vocabulary, stories, examples, etc. But I’m almost certain it’s a manuscript that’s being narrated by a dictation program. Otherwise I’m not sure how the narration could be soo incredibly repetitive in its intonation and cadence. Although there may be some benefit to this level of mechanical repetition for a beginner, I don’t see it as being very useful for application in the real world. And regardless, it’s certainly very hard to enjoy listening to. But the information is clear, although very light on explanation. Certainly not a waste of money. It’s better than many other French learning audio books I’ve heard.
