Historia
Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

This classic deserves better

Great story, horrible production.
Revisado: 04-06-24
The production of this audiobook is horrible. The book is read by 12 separate narrators who keep switching off parts scene-by-scene. Sometimes, a character is read by one person, but his internal monologue is read by a different person within one scene. Sometimes they even switch parts within a scene. This is the most annoying production of an audiobook I have ever suffered through, which is unfortunate because the story is outstanding. It deserved better than what they did to it.

Historia
The final novel of one of America’s most beloved writers - a tale of degeneration, corruption, and spiritual crisis. A Penguin Classic In awarding John Steinbeck the 1962 Nobel Prize in Literature, the Nobel committee stated that with The Winter of Our Discontent, he had “resumed his position as an independent expounder of the truth, with an unbiased instinct for what is genuinely American". Ethan Allen Hawley, the protagonist of Steinbeck’s last novel, works as a clerk in a grocery store that his family once owned.

Pure Steinbeck.

I loved this story. John Steinbeck is a master of fiction, and this story gripped me. I hated stopping, and hurried back to listening as soon as I could.

A decent plot with poor writing
Revisado: 10-11-23
The plot is decent. This could have been a great story. The writing, however, swings wildly, well written in parts, and other parts that sound like they were written by a 12 year old. The worst parts are the fight scenes. They should have been the most exciting parts of the story. Instead, they are unbelievable and cringe inducing. It was hard to finish listening to this.

Very slow pacing.
Revisado: 09-10-23
This is 32-1/2 hours of character development in a story that should have been told in 16 hours. It just drags on and on. It's like asking your friend what he did yesterday, and he proceeds to tell you every single thing he did from the moment he woke up until he went to bed again in excruciating detail. Many times, I considered stopping, but continued, only to reach a very unsatisfying ending. It was a waste of my time. I could have listened to two good audiobooks in the same time.

It isn't often that an author handles time travel this well. The excellent handling of the time travel trope is made better by an excellent story, great characters, and outstanding writing.

Too many interruptions with flash-backs
Revisado: 05-08-23
I loved books 1 & 2 in this series. This one was hard to finish. Throughout the book there are frequent and long "interludes" which are flash-backs to earlier times. These interludes offer some insight into the characters, but really don't add much to the current story. The stories told in these interludes are not especially interesting on their own, and I found them to be a huge distraction from the story. Numerous times I nearly stopped listening. At the end, instead of thinking, "That was a good story" I though, "Well, I made it through."

Historia
With the help of a command AI, the hole in the Daedalus has been fixed by Hazel and her friends. But in the process, they have antagonized the Yi, the aliens who are actually controlling the Daedalus. After a daring escape from the Yi, Hazel and her friends now must convince the people of the Daedalus villages and the village leaders that the Yi exist - and that they must fight back in order to survive. This proves tricky, as those in power don't want their authority challenged.

Better than book 1
Revisado: 01-06-23
This story is much better than Book 1. I enjoyed listening all the way through. The narrator is annoying (for me, anyway). As is Book 1, she sounds like 10-year-old Hermione Grainger lecturing Ron and Harry about sneaking into the restricted section of Hogwarts Library. However, because the story is interesting and well-told, the narration is tolerable.

Painfully slow story arc. Unsatisfying resolution.
Revisado: 01-06-23
I always enjoy Julie Czerneda's works. I wanted to enjoy this one, but it just didn't grab me. Four hours in, I still had no connection to any of the characters. I almost stopped listening. At 12 hours in I had only a faint connection to a secondary character. The following might be a spoiler for some. The MC begins with a set of assumptions about what is happening and the story proceeds along this path. Then he begins to think something else is really happening, and this affects his actions as he continues while pretending the first assumption was right. 18 hours into the story, he suddenly realizes a third thing is what is really happening. In about 15 minutes, everything is brought to a hasty and unfulfilling conclusion. Then there is a little epilogue that doesn't add any additional closure.
Regarding the production, I hate when multiple readers narrate a story by trading off chapters. Each time the reader changes, all the characters take on new voices and speaking styles and it repeatedly throws me out of the story, I like to get absorbed into the story, not be thrown out of it at every chapter start. If one person had read the entire story, I might have grown some attachment to the characters.
