Historia
The stockings are hanging ready, the sherry and pies are waiting by the fireplace - but where is the jolly fat man with his sack? It's not right to find Death creeping down chimneys and trying to say 'Ho ho ho'—but someone's got to bring the little kiddies their presents. Or else they might stop believing. Belief is important in Discworld, particularly on the last night of the year when the time is turning. If the real man in the red suit isn't found by morning, there won't be a morning. Ever again....

Very fun, the narration is particularly good
Revisado: 02-21-23
I've only read a few of the Discworld books, and found this one very enjoyable. I really liked that the narrator gave a terrific performance, giving each of the characters a voice and cadence, as well as the voices of Death and the postscripts being their own separate actors. Definitely recommend!

Historia
A senior at Harvard, Will fits comfortably in his carefully curated roles: a perfect student, an art history major and sometimes artist, the eldest son who has always been his parents' American Dream. But when a mysterious Chinese benefactor reaches out with an impossible—and illegal—job offer, Will finds himself something else as well: the leader of a heist to steal back five priceless Chinese sculptures, looted from Beijing centuries ago.

Extremely dull and unsatisfying
Revisado: 01-03-23
The alternating narrators both put in good performances, but can't save this book from its wild mismarketing.
This is not a heist story. A heist occurs in the background, but this is really a book about five very good looking people having long internal philosophical ruminations. If the book was marketed as a character study I think I would have enjoyed it much more, though one of the five main characters is so wholly unlikeable with no redemption or consequences that even that wouldn't be fully enjoyable.

Historia
In 2016, Rob Delaney’s one-year-old son, Henry, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The family had moved from Los Angeles to London with their two young boys when Rob’s wife was pregnant with Henry, their third. The move was an adventure that would bind them even more tightly together as they navigated the novelty of London, the culture clashes, and the funhouse experience of Rob’s fame—thanks to his role as co-creator and co-star of the hit series Catastrophe. Henry’s illness was a cataclysm that changed everything about their lives.

Such an outrageously sad story, and Rob Delaney handles it so wonderfully - you'll cry but you'll also laugh and feel the deep love he had for his son.

Historia
To millions of fans, All About Eve represents all that’s witty and wonderful in classic Hollywood movies. Its old-fashioned, larger-than-life stars - including Bette Davis, Marilyn Monroe, Anne Baxter, George Sanders, and Celeste Holm - found their best roles in this movie, and its sophisticated dialogue has entered the lexicon. But there’s much more to know about All About Eve. Sam Staggs has written the definitive account of the making of this fascinating movie and its enormous influence on both film and popular culture.

really enjoyable, especially post movie culture
Revisado: 11-27-22
there is so much detail in this book that it all started to wash over me, but in a pleasant way, like listening to your grandma gossip with her friends. the narrator was excellent and did a great job having district voices for all of the people quoted. I'm going to listen to the Sunset Boulevard one next because i enjoyed this one so much.

Historia
Renowned and beloved as a prizewinning novelist, Dara Horn has also been publishing penetrating essays since she was a teenager. Often asked by major publications to write on subjects related to Jewish culture - and increasingly in response to a recent wave of deadly anti-Semitic attacks - Horn was troubled to realize what all of these assignments had in common: She was being asked to write about dead Jews, never about living ones.

would recommend even with caveats
Revisado: 06-24-22
Overall i thought the concept and execution were excellent. It was challenging and engaging and did a great job of digging into each of the sections.
It was occasionally hard to grapple with the disconnect between the descriptions of genocide and hatred towards Jewish people while simultaneously elevating Israel as a political body without mention of the apartheid currently happening there.
And while i thought the narrator did a good job with the somber tone of the work, there were often times where it felt like she was going to burst into tears at any moment, which could be distracting from the work of the text.

Need Machine clamors through the brain like an unruly marching band. Both caustic and thoughtful, these poems offer a topography of modern life writ large in twitchy, neon splendor, in a voice as sure as a surgeon and as trustworthy as a rumor. Honest, irreverent, and sharply indifferent, this audiobook will "hogtie you with awe."

interesting poems, strange narration choices
Revisado: 06-02-22
overall i enjoyed this - some of the poems were particularly good, especially in the back half - but some of the narration choices were strange, and gave the production a "spooky" feeling where it wasn't really warranted and which took away from the content of the poems.

some really good strategies for dealing with anger

in general i thought there was some really useful information for learning to deal with anger, but the swearing kind of felt like a teenager who just figured out what bad words are and is determined to use them as often as possible.
