Historia
August 2019 saw numerous commemorations of the year 1619, when what was said to be the first arrival of enslaved Africans occurred in North America. Yet in the 1520s, the Spanish, from their imperial perch in Santo Domingo, had already brought enslaved Africans to what was to become South Carolina. The enslaved people here quickly defected to local Indigenous populations, and compelled their captors to flee. Deploying such illuminating research, The Dawning of the Apocalypse is a riveting revision of the "creation myth" of settler colonialism and how the US was formed.

boring
Revisado: 05-01-25
utterly boring and a chore to get through. using outdated language in 2018 because your peers still are is not a good look.
the book is non chronological, and jumps decades and goes back to make rounded, and unnecessary points. skip this one.

it's a simple series meant for younger readers, but that doesn't mean the writing has to be this bad. ever book in the series is formulaic, and every book has the FMC and MMC break up. it's annoying and cliché. do more with a story. actually dive into the Korean heritage talked so much about, or the anxieties of chanhe and growing up. this just wasn't a good book. the movies are better.

Her only hope is Land’s End Area School, an isolated concrete wasteland perched on the cliffs.

this had so many loose ends I don't know where to start. the ending felt rushed and made no sense as to wh y the little girl tried to burn the other children. the "friend" betraying the MC and having a change of heart at the last minute to save her was beyond stupid. it was enjoyable only because the writing style of the author is good, but uts wasted on a shit story like this.

Historia
Obituary writer Nadine Barbault doesn’t mind being called “Lady Death”. It suits the ice queen persona she’s cultivated to survive the fast-paced Toronto Herald. So when Nadine learns that famous (and reclusive) author Dot Voline has died, she doesn’t hesitate to run the obituary…only to discover that Dot is very much alive. Nadine’s screw-up has brought Wesley Chen of the rival Spear no end of joy—she’s been a thorn in his extremely ambitious side for years. But the renewed interest in Dot also surfaced chatter about a mysterious past scandal.

cute but uninspired writing
Revisado: 03-23-25
a very cute romance that has little to offer other than telling you the lives of the protagonists. I appreciated the insights into Asian family culture and the micro aggressions they experience as well.
for the actual "mystery" of the story it was anti climatic. the romance? it was a slower burn than I normally read, but not much development. I do like the rivals to lovers trope but it all just kind of fell flat for me. I still enjoyed it and I want to read more stories from this author, but I wouldn't read this again or recommend it.

A bad best man’s speech can ruin a wedding. Why do we plan every detail of a perfect day and then give the groom’s idiot best friend five minutes of total power? Enter Nate (Glen Powell), a speechwriter-for-hire who helps people write incredible best man speeches. To keep the best man from embarrassing himself (and the newlyweds), Nate uses his list of don’ts: Don’t mention the exes, don’t be rated R, and don’t bum everyone out. Nate’s system never fails. That is, until he meets Dan (Nicholas Braun).

Historia
Bridging women's history, the history of the South, and African-American history, this audiobook makes a bold argument about the role of white women in American slavery. Historian Stephanie E. Jones-Rogers draws on a variety of sources to show that slave-owning women were sophisticated economic actors who directly engaged in and benefited from the South's slave market.

should not have had a white narrator
Revisado: 03-13-25
a thoroughly researched body of work that sets the record straight on white women's involvement in the slave trade, keeping, and reluctance to free. it will leave you horrified at what white historians have tried to cover up due to trying to preserve the south's legacy and misogyny.
there is heavy use of the n word and the narrator is white. I want to knock off a star for that, but the rest of the book is just so important to speak about. this book breaks down the legacy of the antebellum south and the trope of the ignorant or benevolent master's wife. truly something all white women should have to read on their journey to becoming an ally. the descriptions of where they have historical record of when white women placed their whiteness above their womanhood especially is chilling.

worth the read
Revisado: 03-08-25
this book wrapped every question I've had since book one. I think it could have, and should have been explain in book 2 but this is fine.
I am a bit tired of Poppy only having strength in her rage. it makes her one dimensional as a protagonist and a woman. this book is clearly setting up book 4 to be where the real action is and I'm okay with that. the author took the time to line up all these pieces that were a bit predictable, but still fun to read.

Historia
On September 26, 2020, Michael was in a great mood. He’d recently returned home to Oklahoma after years in the military. He’d bought a house and had a job teaching and coaching basketball at the local high school. But that night, Michael’s life would turn upside down. Around two o’clock in the morning, he heard people banging on the doors and windows of his home. He called 911 for help. This is the story of what happened next, and why. To understand it, we have to go back to the Trail of Tears that the Five Tribes were forced to walk.

Historia
In this ambitious work, Cedric Robinson demonstrates that efforts to understand Black people's history of resistance solely through the prism of Marxist theory are incomplete and inaccurate. Marxist analyses tend to presuppose European models of history and experience that downplay the significance of Black people and Black communities as agents of change and resistance. Black radicalism, Robinson argues, must be linked to the traditions of Africa and the unique experiences of Blacks on Western continents, and any analyses of African American history need to acknowledge this.

boring and disappointing
Revisado: 02-15-25
if I wanted to read further about white European history I'd have picked up a book with that on the cover. if you're interested in learning about Black Marxism this is not the book for you. 65% of it is going over modern Euorpean history, and while it's nice reading it through a Black lense I'm interested in Black Marxism and learning about the Black radical tradition. only the last 3 chapters had anything worth reading.

God is change. That is the central truth of the Earthseed movement, whose unlikely prophet is 18-year-old Lauren Olamina. The young woman's diary entries tell the story of her life amid a violent 21st-century hell of walled neighborhoods and drug-crazed pyromaniacs - and reveal her evolving Earthseed philosophy. Against a backdrop of horror emerges a message of hope: if we are willing to embrace divine change, we will survive to fulfill our destiny among the stars.

disappointed
Revisado: 02-10-25
this is one of those books that I kick myself for not DNFing.
the plot contains explicit sexual interactions between minors, and the main character being a minor for much of it and expediting heightened orgasms due to her special ability. that was a no for me. the main character begins a sexual relationship with a middle aged man a week after she turns 18. he calls her a baby and disgusted by her age and then proceeds to continue having sex with her. ew.
also, with the amount of talk of God in this book i was made deeply uncomfortable. I don't understand how this is Sci fi when there's nothing sci-fi about it other than it being placed in the future.
it certainly relates to current events, eerily so. but the ending was not great, and the themes in the book were a turn off to the point I won't be reading the second book or any others from this author.
