Historia
It may be difficult to imagine a life-affirming book which begins with the main character, a 14-year-old girl, recounting her rape and murder, but Alice Sebold's debut novel is just such a book. Having received advance critical acclaim that before now was reserved only for literary giants, this book will no doubt invite comparisons to works such as Tracy Chevalier's The Girl with the Pearl Earring and Toni Morrison's Beloved.

Beautiful, but demands attention
Revisado: 07-12-07
As much as I enjoy almost every aspect of this audiobook, I still find it very hard to listen to it in the way I am used to listening. During commute, during work, I can usually enjoy even very demanding volumes, and if I miss a line or a thought because I get distracted, I go back and I'm all set again. With this, I get lost so easily, I'm starting to wonder, what exactly is so different.
My conclusion: you can't listen to it in passing. It doesn't convey plot but emotions and associations, very complex and intricate, and if you miss the point where they branch out, you're still listening, but you're at another place than the narrator. I often have to go back five minutes or more to find, where I got lost. I can not concentrate on anything but the story.
I think, this one would be easier for me to read than listen to.
All the same, it's simple and complex at the same time, a very internal story, wrapped in beautiful words. I usually love the twist and turns, the roundabouts in storytelling. Is just have to make sure to keep up.

Historia
The Tony Award-winning playwright and creator of TV's MASH has fashioned a wickedly funny satire about the Iran-Contra Senate hearings and their participants. A top-notch Hollywood cast, headed by Walter Matthau, brings this scathing comedy to life.

Wordy, astonishing, laugh out loud funny

If you like to relax, sit back, let a story breeze past your mind, smiling a distant smile every few minutes, stay away. This takes your entire mind. If you're driving, you will go over the curb.
There are no two successive lines in Gelbart's play, that aren't funny. And if it fizzes out a little towards the end, it's because you are exhausted from all the wordplay, and from the pure radio presentation, that can't make up for it in stagecraft, than from any fault on the side of the writing.
Prepare to be amazed, amused, and quoting it for years to come. Love it!
