Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

The characters are 2d caricatures. I could tolerate that if there was an interesting plot, but after 7 chapters nothing had happened. I'm returning it.

Incredible lack of empathy
Revisado: 07-29-22
I spent hours listening to women emote about what THEY had lost - my son, my husband, my brother. Personally I am horrified by the thought of a loved one dying, scared and in pain. Aren’t you? My own misfortune in having to go on without them would pale in comparison. Yet that is all these characters seem to care about. I was left feeling pretty queasy.

Historia
This is the book for anyone who feels overwhelmed by the current state of our environment. Hopeful and prophetic, The Future Earth invites us to imagine how we can reverse the effects of climate change in our own lifetime and encourages us to enter a deeper relationship with the earth as conscientious stewards and to re-affirm our commitment to one another in our shared humanity.

Well intentioned but badly written.
Revisado: 04-05-21
This book is infuriatingly vague, long on speechifying and short on concrete ideas. The author constantly commits the cardinal sin of climate writing: describing the worst-case scenario as if it were the most likely scenario.
Most of the book is a “future history” of humanity’s struggles with climate change, something that has already been done, and vastly better, by Kim Stanley Robinson in “Ministry for the Future”. Read that.

One day in the life of one man - ordinarily you’d have to pay me to read such drudgery. But having read The Children Act I’ll read anything by McEwan. This one is even better. It’s not just exquisite writing; it’s a powerful meditation on life in the modern world.

"No time to delay. Do what you were born to do. Fame will be yours when you do this." These are the words that ring in the mind of mild-mannered, beloved schoolteacher Cora Gundersun - just before she takes her own life, and many others', in a shocking act of carnage. When the disturbing contents of her secret journal are discovered, it seems certain that she must have been insane. But Jane Hawk knows better.

Great writer
Revisado: 12-24-17
Like Stephen King, Dean Koontz is a great writer in a genre not known for great writers. Children are a weak spot, and here there are a couple who sound a decade older than they’re supposed to be. But the descriptions of scenes and of the main characters’ thoughts are often enchanting, a quality enhanced by the excellent reader. Oh yeah, and it’s a really good story!

Great story by a really good writer, well read.
Revisado: 12-10-17
As a writer, Koontz is definitely a cut above the rest in this genre. A minor flaw here; the child character sounded a bit fake. I’m guessing he doesn’t have kids. Otherwise, really first rate. The reader was fine; I’ll watch for others by her.
