That civilization is now threatened by another, one so ruthless nearly all hope of survival has been abandoned. The ending makes it worth the read.
Revisado: 05-20-24
The MC is a wimp, plain and simple. Throughout this story he gets kicked around, bullied, and mistreated by absolutely everyone he meets. I thought this would be one of those stories where the underdog finds his Mojo and opens a can of butt-kicking on everyone, but the author had other plans.
I was getting tired of the depressing MC, but the evil alien bad guys kept me listening. The author has created an intriguing culture around the aliens and I wanted to know more. I also wanted to find out why strange things kept happening to the MC. Things that he shouldn't know how to do, or that everyone around him said were not possible, As the story progressed, I was imagining how the author was going to explain these strange occurrences,
The ending was completely satisfying and surprising. The author tied everything together and explained all the strange things that the MC experienced and it was a lot more intriguing then the explanation I had envisioned. I really liked the ending of this story.
This is the first in a series, and the prolog gives you a taste of what is to come, but there is no cliffhanger. This story is complete and you are not left in the middle of some dire situation waiting forever for the next book to come out.
I'm looking forward to book 2 because it sounds like one of the intriguing aliens I liked is going to get a prominent role.

Historia
When smart-aleck, down-on-his-luck bounty hunter Anderson Gunn snags his next job, he’s just happy to get the gig. The target he’s chasing may be wanted for murder, but his bills aren’t going to pay themselves. As it turns out, he probably should've been more selective. When he tracks down Cameron Kovak, the wanted man turns out to be no man at all. Gunn finds himself face to face with a tentacled creature out of Ridley Scott’s worst nightmare - a baby Cthulhu, wearing his target's skin like a onesie. And that's just the start of it.

Meh. Just OK.
Revisado: 05-13-20
The main character is supposed to be an established, successful, bounty hunter, but he's incredibly naive and gullible. He's constantly complaining about his poor finances and debt, but when the good guys offer him a job, he doesn't even ask how much they're paying, he just turns them down because he wants to be independent and not work for anyone else, then he goes to work for the bad guys. WTH?!
The author does not know the difference between a Speedometer and an Odometer.
The author has no understanding of physics. I'm used to this one- science fiction authors tend to ignore real science.
The author has no concept of the value of money. The main character is past due on all his bills including an outstanding loan equivalent to a retirement fund. Then his Ford F150 get destroyed. Then he earns $24,000 and it's enough to pay off all his debt and buy a new truck. Later, in the same chapter, that $24000 is only enough money to make a payment on his debt, not pay it all off. WTH?!
It's like the author went on several vacations while writing this story and kept forgetting what he already wrote.
But, I did kind of like the aliens. They were interesting and I would like to learn more about them.

Meh story, great narrator.
Revisado: 04-30-20
The problem with growing old, and loving to read, is that I keep running across stories that use the same, old, worn out formula. Bad boy wants to do right and save the girl. Again.
The writing was good, the characters were realistic and believable, the author did a great job of putting me inside each characters head so I could really understand their motivations and beliefs, and I liked the fantasy/supernatural twist and the mysteries the main character was slowly unraveling, but I'm tired of the whole, "Yes, I was a bad boy who did bad things for bad people, but it wasn't my fault, and I'm really a good guy inside." theme.
And the ending really disappointed me, The prologue is all about one of the main characters in the story. All through the story, this guy is sort of the bad guy, but the author makes it clear, he's not all bad, he just has his own view on how to do "the right thing". The prologue is about what happens to this character. As it progresses, it seems like the author is setting up this guy to return in the next story. I'm thinking we will get to learn more about this guy and see him grow and develop. Will he change and "see the light", or will he go all in to the "dark side"? I'm looking forward to this story. Then the author takes the easy way out and goes for the cheap vengeance thrill. SO DISAPPOINTING!
The story has a few chapters of torturing the damsel in distress, which I totally skipped over. Doesn't seem like I missed anything important. And there are plenty of fights, gun battles, explosions, car chases, etc., which I sometimes skipped over, I'm just more interested in the characters and the mysteries, than the action. Did I mention I'm old and jaded? I think I did.
So, I like the author, I like the world building, I like the way he lets me get inside each character's head and I like the way he sets up and slowly reveals the mysteries. I absolutely love Jonathan Davis narration. I just feel like I've read this story too many time already.
I'm still going to get the rest of this series, because I want to learn more about these characters and hopefully find out more about some of the supporting characters, like the bartender- there's a lot more to know about this guy.

Fantastic narration of impressive writing.
Revisado: 04-07-20
I do not like apocalyptic, end of the world, dystopian stories, I don't like all the pain, suffering, torture, murder, and worse. They're just not for me. I only got this book because Aetheon Books gave me a code for a free copy and I have really enjoyed all of the other Aetheon books that I have listened to.
And now I am a big fan of author Steven Savile and narrator Steve West. Steven Savile's writing is detailed, immersive, and very fully developed. I could see, hear, and feel everything vividly in my mind. And Steve West's narration was amazing. The emotions in his voice made me feel all the main character's anger, frustration, dread, depression, elation, excitement, etc.
It started a bit slow, lots of descriptions and explanation about the world and the people, but the pace picked up quick and I got sucked in. The mystery deepened all the way through the story. Lots of surprises, lots of unexpected twists, and an emotional roller coaster.
I still don't like pain, suffering, torture, murder, and worse, but I do love a little excitement and a lot of mystery so I couldn't stop listening. I had to find out why this was happening and who was behind it.
I've added Steven Savile and Steve West to my favorites list and I'm looking forward to more from both of these guys.

Got much better when Nixon showed up
Revisado: 02-25-20
The story starts a bit slow, introducing the characters and setting up their back stories, but it got a lot more fun when Nixon showed up- that was when the action ramped up. In the first half of the book, I really didn't see the point of the mafia connection, but they turned out to be a lot of fun later in the story. The mob boss may have been my favorite character. And the ending took me by surprise. I really didn't see that coming. Left me wanting to know what happens next.
Ray Porter did a fantastic job of bringing every character to life.

Fun, light escapism.
Revisado: 10-04-19
Sometimes I don't want a complicated plot or deep, introspective, dialog. I just want a fun story with a kick-ass hero doing what needs done.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Mark Boyett is one of my favorite narrators and he does a great job of bringing every character in this story to life. Yes, the characters are all over-the-top, and somewhat one dimensional, but that is what I want from this type of story. I want the bad guys to be evil, the hero to be mysterious, tough, and strong, and the science nerds to be able to create and implement ridiculously advanced gadgets and solutions. Kinda like James Bond in space.
I'm really looking forward to more stories featuring Chief Gray.

Historia
In a steel-and-lead-encased bunker 20 feet below the basement level of his house, a soldier waits for his final orders. On the surface, a plague ravages the planet, infecting over 90% of the populace. The bacterium burrows through the brain, destroying all signs of humanity and leaving behind little more than base, prehistoric instincts. The infected turn into hyper-aggressive predators, with an insatiable desire to kill and feed. Someday soon, the soldier will have to open the hatch to his bunker, and step out into this new wasteland, to complete his mission....

Just get to the point already.
Revisado: 08-06-18
This is only the second book I have had to return to Audible. The author of this story drags out everything with long, boring, repetition. It takes pages for the main character to open a door. Then he stands there for several more pages trying to work up the courage to take a single freaking step!
After 5 chapters of boring introspection, our hero goes outside and gets his clock cleaned by an anorexic 15 year old girl zombie and runs away to hide in his bunker. Our hero, the super soldier, who has been through every top level training known to modern military, who is selected for this task because he's the best there is, forgets everything he ever learned and can't even remember how to shoot a gun.
I gave up at that point.
