Historia
When brilliant archaeologist Dilara Kenner is contacted by Sam Watson, an old family friend who says that he has crucial information about her missing father, Dilara abandons her Peruvian dig and rushes to Los Angeles to meet him. But at the airport, Sam speaks instead of Noah’s Ark—the artifact her father had long been searching for—and the possible death of billions. Before Sam can explain, he collapses. With his dying breath, he urges Dilara to find Tyler Locke—a man she’s never heard of.

Unintentionally very funny. But at least it’s predictable.

GREAT!!!
Revisado: 03-23-25
This was fun. It was a perfect length - the story never dragged in pace. It was not predictable. And the performance was excellent - just dramatic enough.
This would be a good movie - better than anything I’ve streamed recently.

Historia
Carmen Sanchez is a tough Homeland Security agent who plays by the rules. But when her sister is attacked, revealing a connection to a series of murders across Southern California, she realizes a conventional investigation will not be enough to stop the ruthless perpetrator. With nowhere else to turn, Sanchez enlists the aid of Professor Jake Heron, a brilliant and quirky private security expert who, unlike Sanchez, believes rules are merely suggestions. The two have a troubled past, but he owes her a favor and she’s cashing in.

BEYOND TERRIBLE - DO NOT GET THIS BOOK
Revisado: 01-09-25
I do not know why I finished this audiobook, but I wanted to add the following note to my original review in the last three paragraphs. I usually only review books that I really like or really don't - but this is the first time that I have ever hated an audiobook enough to augment my original review. My additions are all in CAPS to express my horror.
I WILL NEVER, EVER THINK ABOUT LISTENING TO AN AUDIOBOOK WRITTEN BY JEFFREY DEAVER (WHO ONCE USED TO BE GOOD, BUT I HAVE NO FAITH IN HIM ANYMORE) OR ISABELLA MALDONADO. AND I WILL RUN SCREAMING FROM ANYTHING NARRATED BY ANDRE SANTANA OR, ESPECIALLY, AIDA RELUZCO . THE DIALOG IS ABSURD. THE WRITING IS SILLY. THE NARRATION IS CLOYING, ANNOYING, AND CRINGE-WORTHY. THE PLOT IS NOT BELIEVABLE, BUT DESPITE WHAT SOME REVIEWERS WROTE, IT IS ENTIRELY PREDICTABLE. I LISTENED WHILE DOING OTHER THINGS, WHICH IS THE ONLY REASON THAT I DO NOT COMPLETELY HATE MYSELF FOR SPENDING THE TIME - BUT I STILL HATE MYSELF A LITTLE. WHAT A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY. RUN AWAY! SAVE YOURSELF!!!
AND TO THINK THAT THIS IS THE FIRST BOOK OF A SERIES???? GOD, HELP US!!!!!!
I GOT THIS ON A "DAILY DEAL," WHERE MORE THAN A FEW TIMES I HAVE BEEN SUCKED INTO A BAD BOOK . . . BUT THIS IS THE WORST OF ALL OF THEM.
There was just nothing credible about this story, nothing to make it believable or engaging. It smacked of a story that was assembled, not inspired, as though it was written backwards with plot details formulated and filled in. The dialog seemed like something written by someone that never had a conversation in the real world. I didn’t like anything about this audiobook.
And the narration was terrible. Both readers were overly melodramatic. (I’m particularly annoyed by readers that don’t bother to look up how to pronounce words they don’t use. The male reader didn’t know how to pronounce “thermos.” Give me a break.)
Spend the credit on something good by Craig Johnson, Anna-Lou Weatherly, etc.

Inheriting your uncle's supervillain business is more complicated than you might think. Particularly when you discover who's running the place. Charlie's life is going nowhere fast. A divorced substitute teacher living with his cat in a house his siblings want to sell, all he wants is to open a pub downtown, if only the bank will approve his loan. Then his long-lost uncle Jake dies and leaves his supervillain business (complete with island volcano lair) to Charlie. But becoming a supervillain isn't all giant laser death rays and lava pits.

Hilarious and engaging
Revisado: 11-01-24
I like Scalzi, but this novel went against type for him - yet I think it’s the best thing he’s ever written. I laughed out loud at the plot and the dialog. The way Scalzi poked fun at all the villain tropes was wonderful.
I’m not a big fan of Wil Wheaton, but I thought he handled the tone of the novel very well.

Historia
When the biggest colony ship in human history was sent to settle a paradise world, an accident hurtled it deep into uncharted space. A thousand light years from Earth, with no way home and no way to call for help, the colonists’ only hope for survival was the one barely habitable planet in range, a nightmare world they named Croatoan. Landing on the only five mountain peaks tall enough to rise above the lethal acid clouds, the settlers carved a civilization from the rock.

LISTEN TO ALL OF THESE
Revisado: 10-24-24
I just left a long review for the third story. I seldom leave reviews - only when I find an audiobook to be truly great or truly awful. THIS WAS TERRIFIC. And the next two stories are just as good. If you like hard-boiled detectives, try this one, plunked down in a dangerous and corrupt alien world. It works wonderfully.

Brilliant, original story
Revisado: 10-24-24
I was a big fan of the too-short-lived TV series, “Firefly.” The way that it blended western and sci-fi genres was tremendous. These stories pull off a similar feat in blending sci-fi with hard-boiled detective fiction.
I have not been into sci-fi audiobooks much the last several years and, while I used to enjoy the work of Correia and Wyman on the “Monster Hunters” series years ago, I am not sure why I gave these a listen, I am glad I did. I hope there will be many more. And I hope someone options this into a streaming series because it is better than any of the sci-fi that the major streamers have run in the past years.
I do not want to give anything away, but the main character has depth, the world-building is vivid and credible, and the plot of these stories always surprises and delights me. Great stories.

Little do they know that colony will become permanent–and the last stand of the human race. Because, without warning, every single person left on Earth simply...vanishes. It was so clever - but they didn’t know how to end it
Revisado: 09-23-24
I love stories that tie into historical mysteries. This was great until the last 40 minutes are so - when things rushed to an ending that was completely unsatisfying. I felt like they ran out of ideas or time or both. And, having just finished listening, I’m mad that I spent the time.

Historia
Everyone has secrets, and Rachel Holloway is no exception. She’s worked hard to keep the past where it belongs: dead and buried. And so far, she’s been very successful. But now the small newspaper where she works wants to produce a podcast on a cold case: the disappearance 12 years ago of young Molly Forster. Some secrets should never see the light of day, and, as far as Rachel is concerned, whatever happened to little Molly is one of them.

As the story wore on, it became silly
Revisado: 06-28-24
I do not understand how this book has 4.5 stars based on 19.5K reviews. I thought the premise was interesting, but the longer the story wore on, it became impossible to sustain disbelief. And the ending was abrupt and unsatisfying. I am sorry I spent the time.
Respectfully, anyone who gave this audiobook four or five stars has not listened to any of the wonderful novels by Anna Lou Weatherly, Anthony Horowitz, Mick Herron, Craig Johnson . . . and a lot of other wonderful writers. I have not been this badly misled by reviews in a long time.

It was really fun . . . then fell flat
Revisado: 06-23-24
I really enjoyed the first two-thirds of this novel. But then it was like the author had no idea how to resolve the story. The premise was amusing. The dialog was funny.
But then . . . it just went thud.
