That's a big nope
Revisado: 02-26-25
I have 491 books in my library on audible. The narrator in this book is fine, but there is just no story here. I listened for an hour and have no interest in finding out the rest of the story. I don't care about any of the characters. It's a description of a bunch of stuff that happens. But who cares? Not me.

Swords. Sorcery. Dick Jokes. Truly do the gods smile upon you, dear listener, for the first four books in the hilarious Caverns and Creatures series are now available in one audiobook set. Join Tim, Dave, Julian, and Cooper as they are thrown into a hostile fantasy world filled with magic and monsters, and ruled over by a cruel and sadistic game master who taunts and harasses them while he sits back and eats their fried chicken.

Great story... But the narrator...
Revisado: 10-17-24
I listen to A LOT of books... Many are LitRPG. The story is good. Yes, silly and vulgar, but I'm fine with that. But the narrator... It's hard to describe in words. It's the inflection he uses... It's like listening to Napoleon Dynamite narrating for 20 hours... Nearly every sentence ends in the same downward inflection... It's so distracting that I often had to relisten to passages because I was so annoyed. Also, the pitch modulation he uses for Orcs is bad. It sounds like a person with a high voice using a pitch modulator. Talented narrators can make convincing low voices without using this gimic. I will be careful not to listen to books with this narrator in the future. I'm tempted to get a hard copy of the book(s) and record them myself just so I can enjoy the story to its fullest. Again, the story is fun. I'm writing this before I finished the book, but I am often distracted thinking about how badly I need to write this review.

Historia
Jebediah Trapper is a ticking time bomb. After sort of saving the day months ago, he's got a nuclear bomb attached to him in the Fate Dimension, where magic and potential collide. Jeb just wants to defuse himself before he collapses into a sickly pile of green goo or ignites in a city-destroying blast. There's just one problem: The world doesn't slow down because you've got a nuclear hangnail. Mab, Queen of the Fae wants him for unknown, yet most likely sinister reasons. A mysterious, abhorrent entity is making him an offer he can't refuse, and the undead are getting organized.

Revisado: 07-05-24
I can't get enough of Macronomicon. Funny and exciting. His books are a perfect blend of humor, action, drama, and adventure. The endings are not predictable. Nothing like listening to 12 hours of a book and knowing the conclusion 30 minutes in. I hope there are more entries into this universe.

I played all those cool video games. I watched all those movies. I even read the books. In most of 'em, the hero shoots the bad guys, drives a sweet car, never gets hungry, and always seems to get laid by the end. Yeah. Whatever. I gotta be straight with you about why I wrote this journal, and it comes down to one thing, the apocalypse kinda sucks. It doesn’t meet my expectations at all.

Love this book - I want more
Revisado: 05-25-23
I'm not sure if I can say this in a review, but I fell in love with this book in the first 5 minutes when I heard the words "camel f#@ker" and "f#@ktard". Ray Porter's sarcastic tone was absolutely perfect for Dusty. I have always been a fan of Porter, but this book just fit that character of Ray's better than any other I have heard. There is an afterward with the author and his wife/editor that wraps it up nicely. However, I am still wanting more. This book would make a fantastic video game with the slight issue that there is a very strong similarity to another game that was recently turned into a popular series on a well known streaming network... You will know what I'm talking about when you listen. Again, more, more, please write more.

Historia
M is a magician of modest wit, dim ability, and few scruples, who would prefer to spend his easy immortality drinking artisanal beer and making eyes at smiling women. Alas, in the infinite nexus of the universe that is New York City, equilibrium is no easy thing to maintain. Canal pirates, drug-induced divinities, pocket steam-punk universes, hipster zombies, ex-girlfriends, and the devil are all taken in easy stride.

One of the best books I have ever listened to
Revisado: 11-02-22
This is a fantastic book. Before I listened, I read one of the top reviews that was very negative. I tried it anyway and realized that the reviewer must have been uptight and conservative. This book is not shy about drug use or cursing, but it FITS the characters! It's not telling you to go use cocaine. It's also about magic and gods and multiple realities. This is a NOVEL. Also, several people mentioned that it is hard to follow. It's not at all. The gaps in the timeline are not explained. But they don't have to be! It is so well written AND acted. I am an instant fan of Daniel Polansky and will be searching out anything else he writes. If I could give it 6 stars, I would give it 7. If you are intelligent, you have to read this book.

There should be more stars...
Revisado: 08-18-22
I listen to a LOT of audio books. My wife and I share an account and often listen to the same books at different times (because continuing is awkward if we are on the same book). I am, at this very moment, "listening" to another LitRPG book while I write this review. As I listen, I keep thinking that I should write a review for The Infinite World series by J. T. Wright. The general genre is all this series has in common with others that are similar. The one I'm listening to now, is the standard. It is basically a description of playing a computer game. The Infinite World is just... Something better...
The world that Wright has created is so full... So interesting... So fun... The STORY is the focus of these books rather than the stats. I care about the characters and I can't wait to hear what happens next. There is never an explanation of how the world came to be - how the characters began having stats, levels, etc. And that is the magic of it! Okay, so the stat tables for Trent (and a few other characters) seem to take 10 minutes each time they come up... But it's something I can tolerate. The rest of the story is compelling and exciting.
Again, I am listening to another book as I write this and I just don't care about what I'm missing. I wouldn't dare to do this with Wright's stories. I am SO THRILLED to find that this isn't the last book in this series. I truly hope this world can continue indefinitely. The story and the characters are like nothing I have found in any other series. I can't recommend this series enough. Perfectly written and performed.

This is a great series. One of my favorites. I can't wait to read the next book. Great narrator and well written characters. I love that the situation of the world is never explained. This is just the way this world works. Brilliant new take on the standard Lit RPG genre.

This is not the worst thing I have ever heard...
Revisado: 05-14-22
It is definitely the worst thing I have ever listen to until the end. I am a sucker for Cthulu Mythos, so I stuck it out. However, it was painful. This just doesn't work. I get the concept. But it's like listening to a confusing movie with the screen turned off. The talking monsters needed subtitles. It may have been okay with a constant narrator to pull it together, but as is, I spent most of the... performance?... wondering what was going on. The writing was either bad or there was a lot of improv happening. Actually, had I been told the entire thing was improvised, it may have been more impressive. But it should not SOUND like it was improvised. I listen to a LOT OF books. This was not one of them. This is the sort of experience we may have to endure if the Elder Gods really do come through to our dimension. Listening to this (book?) is a punishment fitting of Yog Sothoth himself.

Historia
The Unfolded World is a bitter and unfriendly place for Daniel Carter and Emily Lovecraft. In this world the Cold War never happened because the Soviet Union ceased to exist in 1941. In this world the Nazi Großdeutschland is the premier superpower and is not merely tolerated but indulged because, in this world, the Holocaust happened behind the ruins of the Iron Curtain and consumed only Bolsheviks, Communists, and others the West was glad to see gone. In this world there are monsters, and not all of them are human.
