Historia
In 1980, a wealthy businessman named Carl Fletcher is kidnapped from his driveway, brutalized, and held for ransom. He is returned to his wife and kids less than a week later, only slightly the worse, and the family moves on with their lives, resuming their prized places in the saga of the American dream, comforted in the realization that though their money may have been what endangered them, it is also what assured them their safety.

A horrible family
Revisado: 08-04-24
The Fletchers, the main characters in this book, reminded me of those in Schitt’s Creek with the exception that they were unappealing and humorless. I do not recommend. Although I always enjoy Ballerini’s narration.

Historia
Actor Kelsey Grammer, best known for his roles in the TV sitcoms Cheers and Frasier, delivers Bitter Brew, a compelling mystery featuring Detective Bill Walsh, an upstate cop in the quiet, rural town of Beatriceville, 200 miles north of New York City, who suspects foul play in the death of millionaire city transplant Jonathan Kimball, even though the evidence points to suicide, not murder.

Plodding Plot
Revisado: 06-28-24
Supreme egotist Kelsey Grammer both co-wrote and narrates this mystery, which he tells in the first person. The plot is very simple and rather than weaving together clues about various suspects, they come on stage one after the other. And then, in the last chapters, this plain vanilla tale leads our hero to an S&M and BND chamber. Yuck.

Historia
Florence, the 1550s. Lucrezia, third daughter of the grand duke, is comfortable with her obscure place in the palazzo: free to wonder at its treasures, observe its clandestine workings, and to devote herself to her own artistic pursuits. But when her older sister dies on the eve of her wedding, Lucrezia is thrust into the limelight: the duke is quick to request her hand in marriage, and her father just as quick to accept on her behalf. Having barely left girlhood behind, Lucrezia must make her way in a court whose customs are opaque and where her arrival is not universally welcomed.

Historical Fiction par Excellence
Revisado: 06-13-24
I normally don't go for historical fiction, but this writer, with her gorgeous vocabulary and phrasing, won me over. The book provided a great insight into the Renaissance and how people lived then.

Historia
Amber Glass has spent her entire adult life putting as much distance as possible between her and her hometown of Baltimore, where she fears she will forever be known as “Prom Mom”—the girl who allegedly killed her baby on the night of the prom after her date, Joe Simpson, abandoned her to pursue the girl he really liked. But when circumstances bring Amber back to the city, she realizes she can have a second chance—as long as she stays away from Joe, now a successful commercial real estate developer, married to a plastic surgeon, Meredith, to whom he is devoted.

Not worth the time
Revisado: 10-13-23
This is a slow, meandering story featuring characters with few redeeming qualities. And their occupations — real estate, plastic surgery, outsider-art gallerist— lack drama in the exposition. I hope Laura Lipman isn’t losing her touch. Narration was good, though.

Glad when this ended
Revisado: 05-17-23
Unless you are interested in Broadway of the 1950s, an actress who never made it big, and an alcoholic, but functional father, this is not for you. Why did I buy it? I was interested in a part of her career as a writer and editor that she barely touched upon

Parallel Lives
Revisado: 03-04-23
A lyrical love story that spans the Atlantic Ocean, Tunnel of Mirrors takes the reader back a century to immigrant life in New York City, faithfully evoking the sights and sounds and street life of bygone days.
Rachel, the headstrong daughter, of a stern, religious father, yearns for freedom – yet the only way she can escape him is by marriage to a man she never loved.
Across the water, Ciaran lives by his wits and his brawn, with none to call his own. Years pass, a husband abandons his wife, a child is born from violence, and two souls learn to live with loneliness and disappointment.
Circumstance brings them together in an unexpected way, and this beautifully written tale unfolds in a leisurely, yet suspenseful way. The excellent narrator, Tony Reynolds, succeeds in making the voices of the main characters distinct and compelling.

Historia
Grace Reinhart Sachs is living the only life she ever wanted for herself. Devoted to her husband, a pediatric oncologist at a major cancer hospital, their young son Henry, and the patients she sees in her therapy practice, her days are full of familiar things: She lives in the very New York apartment in which she was raised, and sends Henry to the school she herself once attended. Dismayed by the ways in which women delude themselves, Grace is also the author of a book You Should Have Known, in which she cautions women to really hear what men are trying to tell them.

Very different story from The Undoing
Revisado: 02-16-23
Interesting how the screenwriter used this as a starting point for the Nicolle Kidman/Hugh Grant film. There’s much more about the internal life of the female character. Drags a bit, almost too much detail. But in the end a satisfying listen.

Historia
In 2011, when she was in her late 50s, beloved author and journalist Joyce Maynard met the first true partner she had ever known. Jim wore a rakish hat over a good head of hair; he asked real questions and gave real answers; he loved to see Joyce shine, both in and out of the spotlight; and he didn't mind the mess she made in the kitchen. He was not the husband Joyce imagined, but he quickly became the partner she had always dreamed of. Then, just after their one-year wedding anniversary, her new husband was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

A devastating book
Revisado: 12-15-22
As a recent widow, I found the story of Joyce Maynard and her husband’s love, cancer diagnosis and death horribly sad. I cried many times while listening. Perhaps it was cathartic. It is books like these that touch us so deeply that stay in the memory forever.
