I loved the dual storyline and the heroic women!
Revisado: 01-28-25
What a clever weave of past and present, history and novel, suffering and winning.
I'm so glad that the story of Johanna Bonger has been shared here and by the family's generosity.

By far, my favorite Matt Haig book yet!
Revisado: 12-11-24
This book spoke to me. It was so great to hear the story play out, but it also was a great reminder of the wonders of our world around us. As the book e ded I saw a cardinal in the rain and it all seemed beautiful. Thanks to Matt for reminding us to see all the beauty around us.

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

A saga of families, a house & impact on 1 another
Revisado: 08-24-24
1st time listening to Tom Hanks read...such a great voice.
The lives of these people and the house were like waves of the ocean, pulling at you while the sand made you unstable. But the details, relationships, and situations were like the draw of the water, the air, the sounds. You keep wanting more. Each chapter pulling you back, even when you aren't there.
A great story filled with the highs and lows of emotions dealing with life, and the people you love, and sometimes hate.

Historia
Millions of Amor Towles fans are in for a treat as he shares some of his shorter fiction: six stories based in New York City and a novella set in Golden Age Hollywood. The New York stories, most of which take place around the year 2000, consider the fateful consequences that can spring from brief encounters and the delicate mechanics of compromise that operate at the heart of modern marriages.

I was a school teacher decades ago, yet I had never heard of Deborah Samson. My husband and thoroughly enjoyed this novel.
My favorite part was the Author's Note at the end recounting her research on the real life of Deborah Samson and the other people & events in the book.

Historia
It isn't always easy growing up as a human in Elfhelm, even if your adoptive parents are the newly married Father Christmas and Mary Christmas. For one thing, Elf School can be annoying when you have to sing Christmas songs every day - even in July - and when you fail all your toy-making tests. Also it can get very, very cold. But when the jealous Easter Bunny and his rabbit army launch an attack to stop Christmas, it's up to Amelia, her new family and the elves to keep Christmas alive. Before it's too late....

A clever tale w/ lots of fun, magical words but...
Revisado: 01-03-24
Sometimes scary, sometimes sad..kind of like life.
My only real criticism is the very abrupt, fact timing between chapters. It made it difficult to break between them. Not sure who or why this aspect was so poorly edited.
Otherwise we really enjoyed the weave of this story between worlds and characters!

Historia
Like most gentiles in Nazi-occupied Paris, architect Lucien Bernard has little empathy for the Jews. So when a wealthy industrialist offers him a large sum of money to devise secret hiding places for Jews, Lucien struggles with the choice of risking his life for a cause he doesn't really believe in. Ultimately he can't resist the challenge and begins designing expertly concealed hiding spaces - behind a painting, within a column, or inside a drainpipe - detecting possibilities invisible to the average eye. But when one of his clever hiding spaces fails and the immense suffering of Jews becomes incredibly personal, he can no longer deny reality.

Gruesome & Sickening but well done
Revisado: 10-10-23
So many disgusting issues filled with deplorable acts and hate.
It was nauseating at times to hear the details and violence.
This story is not for the faint of heart. It's saddening to know that this hate still lives on.
The writing was very good and the narrator was excellent.
