Fun Listen
Revisado: 04-27-24
I really enjoy this story and the narration is well done. Ben Allen, especially, is able to voice characters so that you can practically see each one! There are times the name repetition gets pretty loud, but no complaints otherwise. This is one of the audiobooks I return to again and again, when I don't feel well, when I want comfort, etc.

Enchanting
Revisado: 04-02-24
What a listen!! This narrator has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever had the pleasure of hearing. She manages male voices without sounding like she's trying hard, and without making them sound feeble or like caricatures of masculinity. Not an easy feat, since so few manage it well. Watch out listeners, this siren could have us following her anywhere!
It helps, of course, that the writing itself is artfully engaging. I've already got the next book in my pre-order list. The author having studied Arthurian legend comes through in the (seemingly) easy authenticity of her prose. I foresee this being one I listen to many times.
I found myself recalling Gregory Maguire's Wicked in the way it gives us the formative childhood experiences and perspective of a character so often portrayed as a villain, inviting us to remember how much of "good" and "bad" is a matter of perspective.

Great Narrator
Revisado: 03-23-24
I've tried getting into this story numerous times over 30 years, and it just doesn't hit my buttons, but I really like this narrator! His lady's voices are his weakest point, for me, but not enough for me to not listen. Lengthy descriptions, male voiced monologues, etc., are great in his voice!

I Keep Coming Back
Revisado: 03-22-24
I have so enjoyed this collection of stories and it keeps me coming back to listen again. I have been chasing down more works of the authors and narrators. Some of the stories are too painful for going through every time; others make me realize I need to revisit the originals to understand where they've jumped off better. I have also come to realize how many other stories riff off Alice in one way or another.

Historia
The world has become a dangerous place. Despite the environmentalists' best efforts, the atmosphere has turned toxic, destroying almost all life—plants, animals and most of humanity, too. Survivors live in domes protected by chitin shields, serving one or other of the two great companies, Lord Vane's Tempestas or Lord Sine's Genrich, with their very different visions for mankind's future. A long period of uneasy collaboration between them is about to end.

Ready for Some Info-tainment?
Revisado: 03-08-24
Over the past year Andrew Caldecott has swiftly become one of my most-sought authors. I've listened through his Rotherweird trilogy three times, and listened to the first half of this one twice, because there is so-o much going on, and you don't want to miss a bit or you'll get left in the murk. His characters are SMRT, I mean s-m-A-r-t! As in well read, logical, and able to make profound leaps of reason for problem solving. I'll be processing this one for a little while before going into the sequel, Simul, but I'm already looking forward to it.

Really Satisfying
Revisado: 03-08-24
A few months ago I listened through Volume 11 of The Best Sci-Fi & Fantasy of the Year, which has a less than 2-hour version of this story that I really enjoyed. So imagine my joy at discovering there is an 18-hour one! Certainly there were bits I feel could have been shaved some, but overall I enjoyed this immensely. I am a great lover of the "Build Your Own Family" lifestyle in books and film, and this hits those buttons up and down. The author and narrator both do a great job of pulling the listener in and forming attachments to the characters and circumstances.
If you're looking for smart, principled, strong, loving female leads to get to know during Women's History Month, give this one a try.

To earn his pardon and avoid becoming yet another necromancer statistic, Timmy has to work for the Council. From bandit uprisings to giant sea serpents and ogre invasions, Timmy and the others are there to save the day - sort of. When the dragon egg their resident pyromaniac stole hatches to reveal the world’s cuddliest harbinger of death, Timmy and the others are dragged into a pair of diabolically dangerous missions. Breaking out of one of the world’s most secure prisons was hard enough. Now, they have to break back in to rescue a vampire.

Unconventional Heroes Indeed
Revisado: 02-29-24
If you enjoy fun, absurdist adventure in the vein of Douglas Adams, definitely give these stories a go. There's a lot of practicality embedded in the silliness, and vice versa, and the kinds of heroics here are my cuppa, especially the unlikely Franken-family being built over time.
Fred Berman manages all these characters without seeming like he's trying too hard, or resorting to shrieking as so often happens. I recognized his voice immediately while listening to a totally different audiobook recently, and (like at least one other listener) will be looking for him as narrator now.

Lots of Options
Revisado: 02-13-24
I really enjoyed this collection of sci-fi and fantasy stories, enough so I came searching for several of the stories again and again. There's a nearly noir style detective story, a few reimaginings of classic fairy/Grimm bros tales, some had me giggling, some had me trying not to cry, and some that bowled me over and I just had to let the feelings do their thing. Of course not every story is going to speak to you, but that is possible every time you try a new story, book, band, album, song, show, film, whatever. The important things are the ones that DO!
These kinds of collected stories are great for trying out authors you're unfamiliar with, learning about authors you've never heard of, and finding out story genres you've been skeptical of are actually precisely what you've been looking for. Even the editor can become a name you start looking for (as in my personal experience).

Historia
Buried deep within the consciousness of Sergeant Raymond Shaw is the mechanism of an assassin, a time bomb ticking toward explosion, controlled by the delicate skill of its Communist masters. Shaw returns from the Korean War to an idolizing and unsuspecting country. What follows is at once a spy story, a love story, and a sobering, yet outrageously funny satire on demagoguery in American politics.

I don't even know how long The Manchurian Candidate has been on my TBR list, probably more than 20 years. I really enjoyed listening, and am so glad I finally got to it because so much of it feels really relevant right now. (Tomorrow is the 1st day of 2023, this book was published in 1959.)

Why Wasn't History Done Like This in School?
Revisado: 08-25-22
When I saw that Arran Lomas (Thoughty²) had put out a history book, I knew I'd get it. The only question in my mind was whether the author also narrated the audio version, because that might have been the determining factor as to whether I got it in physical form or in audiobook form. Ding ding ding, winner! I made the audiobook purchase within seconds.
This is a fun re-examination of British history, starting just before William the Conquerer's reign. A thousand years of history that moves at an easily digestible clip without forcing too much upon you too quickly. I also appreciate the occasional aside by the author as part of the whole story. If only he could have been all of my history teachers in school.
