Clever origin story for the spyness series, but it will make more sense if you know the players before you listen to this one. Excellent narrator, as usual.

Lazy ending to an excellent series
Revisado: 12-13-20
I loved this series, until the last 25% or so of this fourth book. It's like Ms. Mead got tired of writing, and just....quit. With 30 minutes to go, there were still about 3 hours' worth of plot lines to resolve. And mostly, they just didn't resolve. I heartily dislike books wherein the ending is left up to the reader/listener, and ugh, this definitely falls into that category.
That said, the characters continue to delight--though Eugenie and Jasmine are portrayed as weaker in this one than prior books, which is a bit annoying. why not let the women save the day?--and the plot twists are incredible. They just don't resolve in a satisfactory manner.

Excellent plot twists and narrator
Revisado: 06-02-19
Natalie Ross was superb, as usual. This story has excellent plot twists, but be warned that the heroine is really annoying for a while in the middle. Persevere, though, it's worth it.

skip it
Revisado: 04-14-19
I've read some Fern Michaels books, and I always like Natalie Ross as a narrator.....but this one did not do it for me. (Full disclosure: I didn't finish it. Got maybe 90 minutes in, and decided I'd regret spending another 7 hours of my life on this, so I stopped and moved on to a different story.) The parts I did hear...the whole thing is extremely shallow, and not even remotely based on anything that could be reality. And, Ms. Ross' performance was much less wonderful than I'm used to from her. Often she can salvage a crappy story...but not this time. I think maybe it was an early one of hers? It lacked her usual awesomeness, but was still pretty good, with easily-identified characters etc.

Gabrielle Boudreaux, the youngest of the Boudreaux clan, is a single mother of her young son, Sam. Running a bed-and-breakfast at the family plantation house at the edge of the Mississippi River, Gabby loves her inn, her boy, and her family. She meets new people every day and takes pride in the house and land that has been in her family for more than five generations. Blessed beyond measure, she's also lonely, although she would never admit that to anyone, until Rhys O'Shaughnessy walks through her door.

Horrible narrators, annoying characters
Revisado: 10-16-18
The book alternates points of view between the main female character and the main male character. So the narrators also alternate chapters--which is very confusing for the listener because character voices are therefore constantly changing. Why not have mr. York do all the male voices, and ms. Fulginiti all the female voices? And yes, alternate chapters for the narration depending on POV. but to swap everything, every chapter? It was like the two narrators each did their parts entirely separately from each other. I couldn't even finish it.
The story was meh (tho certainly my opinion was adversely affected by the really bad narration), with the main make character being a bit on the pushy-rape-culture-I-know-what's-best-for-the-little-lady side. Irritating

Oh, the sexism
Revisado: 10-16-18
This narrator, as usual, was excellent. The story was basically good but wow it sure has a protagonist with sexist views on women and sex. To her credit, ms. Brown calls attention to this issue in her introduction, written years after this book was first published. But it still got in the way a bit.

Good characters, excellent narrator, story that didn't always age well
Revisado: 10-08-18
The narrator is excellent. Her speech cadence is rather fast, which annoyed me for the first chapter, maybe, but after that I didn't notice bc she does such a good job.
This story was written in 1998, and as such has some elements that have not aged well. For instance, in more than one scene, ignoring the woman's "no" and kissing her anyway is portrayed as romantic. This bothered me, from my lofty listening position 20 years and a world of awareness about rape culture later; however, the rest of the story was so good that I was able to overlook these less than desirable elements by remembering the book's age.
There are a few other plot pieces I took issue with--why Cat feels she must pay not only her bills but those of her extremely irresponsible mother and extremely ungrateful siblings, for instance. I've read other reviews about how readers/listeners wanted to punch Travis--and yes, he's a jerk (as he needs to be for the story to have any tension whatsoever)--but myself, I wanted to smack Cat's family (whom, to be fair, we never actually meet) for being selfish twits.
Overall, though, this recording earns 5 stars, because once I started, I hated to stop. Listened to the whole thing in one weekend, which is not my usual practice.

Great narration, but completely implausible story
Revisado: 05-23-18
As usual, excellent job by Mr. Gigante.
The story got two stars, since I actually finished it. But....so very many details were wrong. Corn is harvested LONG before November in Massachusetts. Salem is not a small town; I'm pretty sure the nearest cornfields are 50 miles away, not 5. Fall foliage in New England is early to mid-October, not November. No one comes from Boston to look at leaves in Salem! First, it's not that far away; second, there aren't a ton of trees in Salem. People go to New Hampshire, or western mass, or Maine.
Brad and Eve are the world's most annoying characters.
Without all those distractions, decent story, with a nice twist at the end. I had trouble getting past the distractions, tho.

Good--no, great!-- 'til the end
Revisado: 03-22-18
First, the narration was outstanding, as usual with Ms. Ericksen.
Plot-wise, this was a fantastic book...until the last 90 minutes or so. Then a plot twist out of left field (and SO not the way I thought Ms. Hannah was going to go with it). Trying to avoid spoilers, I'll just say that...it felt forced. And, sure enough, in the post script, the author admits that "she's wanted to write a book about X for a long time." Well....that's great, but the first 90% of the book WASN'T about X, and throwing it in at the end just felt wrong and unnecessary and way out of left field.
That said, the book was awesome right up until then, so maybe worth a listen anyway. Stop when Kate walks offstage, and just imagine your own ending from there!
