Excellent book! Well written and well read. I had no idea about most of this history and it was told in an extremely interesting. Nothing boring or long winded in this book. Highly recommended!

Historia
King Philip's War, the excruciating racial war - colonists against Indians - that erupted in New England in 1675, was, in proportion to population, the bloodiest in American history. Some even argued that the massacres and outrages on both sides were too horrific to "deserve the name of a war". Telling the story of what may have been the bitterest of American conflicts, and its reverberations over the centuries, Lepore has enabled us to see how the ways in which we remember past events are as important in their effect on our history as were the events themselves.

Sprawling!
Revisado: 08-28-24
I’ve listen for a few hours and I hardly heard about the war. So far it’s mostly about literacy of the period. Over and over again. I was looking for a history of the war, the beginning of it, events that happened during it and implications after the war. So far, 90% of it is about what was written at the time or what was written. Over and over again. I wanted to like this but I really wanted to learn about the actual war.

I might try this again in the future but it’s extremely long-winded. The little I’ve listened to was a bit of a struggle because it was SO dragged out.

Historia
Even before he was shot dead on the stairway of the tony Grand Central Hotel in 1872, financier James “Jubilee Jim” Fisk, Jr., was a notorious New York City figure. From his audacious attempt to corner the gold market in 1869 to his battle for control of the geographically crucial Erie Railroad, Fisk was a flamboyant exemplar of a new financial era marked by volatile fortunes and unprecedented greed and corruption. But it was his scandalously open affair with a showgirl named Josie Mansfield that ultimately led to his demise.

I really enjoyed this audiobook. For the first time I needed a shorter book and I think if this was longer it would be too much fluff. This was precise and well researched.

Historia
The story of the legendary Pinkerton detective who took down the Molly Maguires and the Wild Bunch. The operatives of the Pinkerton' s National Detective Agency were renowned for their skills of subterfuge, infiltration, and investigation, none more so than James McParland. So thrilling were McParland' s cases that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle included the cunning detective in a story along with Sherlock Holmes. Riffenburgh digs deep into the recently released Pinkerton archives to present the first biography of McParland and the agency' s cloak-and-dagger methods.

I hoped I would have enjoyed it more
Revisado: 02-27-23
It was well but not great. I never felt like it had a murder mystery plot. The book as a whole deals with labor unions and big business. There’s gang type murders but nothing that ever really jumped out at me. The prologue was the best part in my opinion. The subject matter sounded fascinating. I just never got into the book.

I was like everyone else and assumed Lizzie Borden was guilty and this book does a great job proving how she could not have had blood on her hands. Well written and well performed! A great audiobook!

For the first time, the full story of a crime that has haunted New England since 1873. The cold-blooded ax murder of two innocent Norwegian women at their island home off the coast of New Hampshire has gripped the region since 1873, beguiling tourists, inspiring artists, and fueling conspiracy theorists. The killer, a handsome Prussian fisherman down on his luck, was quickly captured, convicted in a widely publicized trial, and hanged in an unforgettable gallows spectacle.

Great Book!
Revisado: 02-24-22
This is a great example of what a novel should be! Well researched and it did not go off and various tangents like other books tend to do. This is a bit longer too but that's a great thing as well since it was so interesting.
Highly recommended!

Historia
In the first half of the nineteenth century, an epidemic swept Europe: arsenic poisoning. Available at any corner shop for a few pence, arsenic was so frequently used by potential beneficiaries of wills that it was nicknamed "the inheritor's powder." But it was difficult to prove that a victim had been poisoned, let alone to identify the contaminated food or drink since arsenic was tasteless. Then came a riveting case.

A Bit Sprawling
Revisado: 01-19-22
The book was interesting but it felt a bit sprawling. Sometimes the main case of a family dealing with a supposed poisoner was talked about and sometimes it would go in various directions I thought. All dealing with Arsenic but in a choppy way. I think I would have enjoyed it more if the focus was on the case and perhaps more on the history of the key players.
I did have to laugh to myself when, in the fist 10 minutes of the book, it seems to mention 20 people and quite a few with similar names. Almost impossible to keep track of who's who.
