Ned is a dedicated professional always perplexed by the situations he encounters, like many people in the current world. Le Carre, through Smiley, is honest in describing our world. I believe Le Carre said of the service in an interview (parapharising) he wished they had been better.

What really happened and, as important why, is thoroughly examined. And the text and narration honestly show that what happened depends on where you were. This book extends beyond music and popular culture and is an important resource for future historians of all kinds.

Straight to the point

Well researched and explained. To my mind, Malcolm Gladwell never disappoints in his explanations. He has well described the tipping point phenomenon for us. Now he has done the same for the over story phenomenon. The good news is that an over story can be identified beforehand, whereas the tipping point is harder to notice beforehand (as he describes early in this book).

This is a complex tale with some surviving characters coping with the outcome and others planning to carry on, but all are changed. Of course we know that Mick Herron will have some showing up later. The author has a way with back stories for his characters.

Strength and humility

This memoir is a clear description of the authors experiences with efforts to confront major medical and public health crises from the late 20th century and early 21st century. His strength, stubbornness and humility are very well displayed in this memoir.

In the 1980's AIDS was a sexually transmitted disease that was also transmitted from mother to baby and was more than 90% fatal. When you think about it, if not confronted and treated, AIDS was a threat to our species. The author doesn't describe it in this way, but I believe historians will.

Dr. Fauci gives a very candid review of what went well with the approach to the COVID pandemic and what did not. He provides a useful starting point for how to prepare for the next disease that is sure to come.

This work focuses on the naivete that overcame warnings of the real dangers ahead. This struggle seems to me to be one of the central themes of history.

Maybe I missed it, but we're the syringe contents analyzed? I got the idea that other powder from the scene were, but not the syringe.
