Historia
At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

Quite a journey - both physical and emotional

Loved this book. I loved both Cheryl's raw depiction of her struggles and her descriptions of her epic hiking experience and the people she met along the way. makes me desperately want to make a similar trip.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Best book I've read in a long time
Revisado: 02-27-22
Thank you Mr. Weir for writing such a wonderful adventure for my brain. I loved this book so much and am already looking forward to reading it again with my kids. Such a great blend of science and storytelling. And the narration & sound effects were perfect. Without giving spoilers, there is a specific component to this story that really lends itself to the audio format. I can't imagine it could have been reproduced as well in print format.

Historia
Data is fundamental to the modern world. From economic development, to healthcare, to education and public policy, we rely on numbers to allocate resources and make crucial decisions. But because so much data fails to take into account gender, treating men as the default and women as atypical, bias and discrimination are baked into our systems. And women pay tremendous costs for this bias in time, money, and often with their lives. Celebrated feminist advocate Caroline Criado Perez investigates the shocking root cause of gender inequality and research in Invisible Women.

Made me notice things I never noticed before
Revisado: 02-12-22
This was a powerful and fascinating read. I found myself nodding along and getting angry every time a new topic was mentioned where women have been completely ignored from the equation. I am grateful to the author for putting all of this information together and I think it should be mandatory reading for both men and women.

Revisado: 01-01-22
This book is a perfect blend of wit, humor, nature, adventure, education, and reflection on "the big picture". And Nick Offerman's narration is a delight. I'm an even bigger fan than I was before, and remain even more firmly convinced that he is the Mark Twain of our times.

Revisado: 11-03-21
I read the paper copy 15 years ago. It was in fact easy and I remained a nonsmoker for those 15 years... I did fall back into the trap Dec. 2020 after losing my dad to Covid. I just now finished the audio version and smoked my last cigarette! I am glad to call myself an ex-smoker. No more repeats for this guy! Thank You Allen Carr!!!

In 1912, scientist Marie Curie spent two months on the British seaside at the home of Hertha Ayrton, an accomplished mathematician, inventor, and suffragette. At the time, Curie was in the throes of a scandal in France over her affair with Paul Langevin, which threatened to overshadow the accomplishment of her second Nobel Prize. Each human being would grasp the Nine Insights in time, predicted the text from the thick of the rain forest. But in an era of spiritual reawakening, author James Redfield brought these understandings to the forefront of modern thought.

Meh...
Revisado: 07-12-20
I did not love this book. the writing was very clumsy and the storytelling was mediocre. But I get that its purpose is to be a long parable to share a worldview with people. That worldview, however, was about 30-40% common sense with the remaining 60-70% being psychobabble and woo based on faulty assumptions. I found the author's blurring/interchanging between the different definitions of evolution (one being the scientific theory, and the other being gradual change in an individual's thinking) especially annoying. Also, most of the important characters were men, and the women characters were all either weak or peripheral which was grating.
I can see how some people would benefit from reading this book and seeing certain things in a new way, but it was just "meh" for me.

Turning gender on its head
Revisado: 11-03-19
Wow. This one's gonna stick with me for awhile. Definitely one of the best books I've read in a long time. It's a relevant, thought-provoking, and suspenseful examination of what would happen if the power dynamic between men & women were flipped. I could see this becoming a real literary classic, it's that good. I hope it gets the recognition it deserves.

Historia
Traditionally, Americans learned in school that the ancestors of the people who inhabited the Western Hemisphere at the time of Columbus' landing had crossed the Bering Strait 12,000 years ago; existed mainly in small nomadic bands; and lived so lightly on the land that the Americas were, for all practical purposes, still a vast wilderness. But as Charles C. Mann now makes clear, archaeologists and anthropologists have spent the last 30 years proving these and many other long-held assumptions wrong.

Revisado: 09-28-19
This book was fascinating and enlightening. I am so angry that I was taught such biased and inaccurate information in school, and so sad about all that has been lost. The changes in North and South America between pre- and post-European contact are so much deeper and more complex that I imagined. Everyone needs to read this book immediately.
