Historia
Mara Sitwell was only 11 when she went missing. Nineteen years later, she’s been found wandering through remote woodland, alone and confused. She says she’s been kept in an underground cell for all these years - but refuses to reveal anything about the man who snatched her. What does she have to hide? And who’s she protecting? Her brother-in-law, Damian, certainly doubts she’s telling the whole truth and fears she might even be a danger to his young children, especially when his wife insists on moving Mara into their home.

The story was captivating.
Revisado: 01-29-25
The story grabbed my attention almost immediately. However, the narrator for the book was all wrong in my opinion. He always sounded overly excited in the face of what should have been devastating news, in fact, no matter what he always sounded excited. And he was not great at doing other voices... it was so annoying.
Now, as far as the story goes, it seemed a little like a first book. The author often contradicted themself or answered a question before it was asked and then the question was asked. It was a little parochial. But, please, form your own opinion. I did enjoy the story and was surprised by the ending.

Historia
My fiancé brought me tea and scrambled eggs in bed that morning, and we snuggled together, talking about buying our rings, and about our perfect wedding next year. Then we headed into town. He held my hand and gazed at the ring I liked best, a smile spreading slowly over his face. Then a glass of bubbly to celebrate. I felt flushed, excited and ready for the rest of my life with the man I loved. We race to get on the train home. It screams to a halt and I run towards its open doors. Made it. I think he’s right behind me — but when I turn around, he’s gone.

If you like "Gone Girl" by Gillian Flynn, you'll like this too. It will keep you interested all the way to the end. Trust me, it's worth the credit.

So courageous! Possible spoiler alert.
Revisado: 11-23-24
The author, wow, such an inspiration. As a victim of abuse, the courage she showed in reporting her abuse and in continuing to handle it all after she was not believed by the authorities is nothing short of amazing. This book is so well written I could feel her pain and anxiety. The author was able to explain what happened without going into so much detail as to put someone off but enough that your heart reached out to her. I caught myself being angry for her at her mother, her stepfather, the police... and then finally relief and triumph for her in the end. It's ridiculous that authorities cannot or maybe will not examine accounts of abuse, especially when it is coming from a sect of people they believe are extremely religious. They need to take into account the courage of a person to come forward in the first place and then for it to be their own bishop or pastor/elder/priest for others. Sorry...I hope I didn't give away too much but the justice system needs some adjustments and education.
The book is excellent, the narrator has a great voice and read the book expertly.

I didn't realize when I first started listening that the author was part of the FBI task unit that created criminal profiling. Although these cases are horrible to hear and these families suffered unspeakably, the way the author clears up points and identifies myths brings so much to light. Having never been in the shoes of these families I can only imagine what they endured but I do hope those that are still around find some solace in knowing their loved one wasn't forgotten and that maybe this new information can help solve the case. Happy listening!

So-so
Revisado: 08-13-24
If you are a true horror fan, like me, you may not appreciate this story. It's creepy, mainly because it's told by a little girl. And the fact that a child sees such creepiness adds to the creep factor. However, in my opinion, the storyline was a little weak. I will give props for the ending.

NARRATOR!
Revisado: 08-04-24
I'm sorry, I generally don't write a review so early in listening to a book but I'm not sure I can finish it. Let me first say I love Freida McFaddens books, they always pull me in and keep me until the end. This book is the same, starts with a punch and makes you want to listen to binge listen...except for the narrator. I hate being so critical but this ladies voice is so high pitched and harsh. She is completely flat, very little emotion which makes all of the characters seem like psychopaths. A bad narrator can make a good book a horrible listen. Do yourself a favor and listen to the sample.

Very Informative
Revisado: 07-27-23
As a Christian. I find the study of other religions and practices very interesting. Exorcism is one of those that I find really intriguing. It takes a strong faith and steadfastness that not everyone can handle, and so I believe had to be a true calling from God. These podcasts are very informative and entertaining. Listening to Father Martinez recount his experiences was fascinating. If you love the creepy but true.... this podcast is for you (rhyming not intended but a happy accident...lol). Can't wait for season 2. Happy Listening!

Let me start off by saying I love Darcy Coates books, all of her stories are fun and intriguing. However, this one just did not hold my interest. And I was so excited about it, I downloaded 2 books from her to listen to while traveling. The first book was AWESOME as always....this one, I just could not get into it. It could be just me on this particular story, but it wasn't for me. And wouldn't you know....Audible won't let me return it. Go figure.

Ummm...what?
Revisado: 12-27-18
At first, the book seemed to capture my interest, but the more I listened the more perplexing it became. By the end, I was scratching my head and wondering what just happened. I purchased this book because of a review I read about the serious plot twists which I love but I guess I was expecting something more along the lines of Gone Girl or The Girl on the Train and I suppose it's comparable but this book was just not for me. So, if you're into some serious plot twists then this might be a good book for you. I'll just say the storyline wasn't my cup of tea. However, Mr. Chiou's narration was spot on for the character...very dark, very intense...
