Takes you away to a different time and place
Revisado: 04-26-12
What did you like best about The Hare with Amber Eyes? What did you like least?
I liked the sense of history. Also learning about a different times and places was interesting
What could Edmund de Waal have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
It is non-fiction. I wondered if it would have been more enjoyable as a novel. The story follows the objects rather than the people and sometimes I wanted to know more about the people.

Historia
First published in 1865, these endearing tales of an imaginative child's dream world by Lewis Carroll, pen name for Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, are written with charming simplicity. While delighting children with a heroine who represents their own thoughts and feelings about growing up, the tale is appreciated by adults as a gentle satire on education, politics, literature, and Victorian life in general.

Serious listening
Revisado: 04-23-12
Would you try another book from Virginia Woolf and/or Juliet Stevenson?
Love Juliet Stevenson and she makes this book come alive. It is an amazing book but pretty heavy going.
Has Mrs. Dalloway turned you off from other books in this genre?
It's good stuff to think about. Virginia Wolf is an amazing writer.
Have you listened to any of Juliet Stevenson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I love everything by Juliet Stevenson.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
I don't think you could make this into a movie (though someone did). It's about the thoughts inside people's heads.

Historia
Northern Ireland, spring 1981. Hunger strikes, riots, power cuts, a homophobic serial killer with a penchant for opera, and a young woman’s suicide that may yet turn out to be murder: on the surface, the events are unconnected, but then things—and people—aren’t always what they seem. Detective Sergeant Duffy is the man tasked with trying to get to the bottom of it all. It’s no easy job—especially when it turns out that one of the victims was involved in the IRA but was last seen discussing business with someone from the loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This is a good fun listen. Atmosphereic. Gritty
Which scene was your favorite?
Many enjoyable moments, except enjoyable is not quite the right word. It's a serious murder mystery with the right touch of cyicism. Great ending - satisfying.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I could listen to Gerard Doyle all day long.
Any additional comments?
I love Gerard Doyle. He's the perfect narrator for this book.

Historia
Written at the request of Charles Dickens, North and South is a book about rebellion that poses fundamental questions about the nature of social authority and obedience. Gaskell expertly blends individual feeling with social concern and her heroine, Margaret Hale, is one of the most original creations of Victorian literature. When Margaret Hale's father leaves the Church in a crisis of conscience she is forced to leave her comfortable home in the tranquil countryside of Hampshire....

Loved it
Revisado: 04-20-12
If you could sum up North and South in three words, what would they be?
A great listen!
What was one of the most memorable moments of North and South?
Full of saddness and beauty. Lots of Bravery in the face of difficulty and a clash of cultures as well.
Have you listened to any of Juliet Stevenson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Always love Juliet Stevenson. She gets it right. She's also spot on with the accents.
Any additional comments?
If you like Jane Austen you'll like this too.

Historia
Ulysses is regarded by many as the single most important novel of the 20th century. It tells the story of one day in Dublin, June 16th 1904, largely through the eyes of Stephen Dedalus (Joyce's alter ego from Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man) and Leopold Bloom, an advertising salesman. Both begin a normal day, and both set off on a journey around the streets of Dublin, which eventually brings them into contact with one another.

Difficult
Revisado: 04-20-12
What disappointed you about Ulysses?
It's a pretty confused story with no plot. It's hard to follow if you don't have all the background. I'm sure it's very worthwhile but it's hard work.
Any additional comments?
The narrator does a great job of bringing the characters to life.
