Very fun story - frustrating narration
Revisado: 05-01-24
Really enjoyed this book, while it’s quick and fast paced which removes some of the true depth longer novels can achieve, I think it was fun and easy to read without being empty. My one big complaint is the huge amount of mispronunciation by the narrator, and the messed up tenses or confused and incorrect voice use at times. I really liked their voice, but they should’ve had a dictionary with them for the record because it felt like AI reading it.

Now Scythes are the only ones who can end life - and they are commanded to do so in order to keep the size of the population under control. Citra and Rowan are chosen to apprentice to a scythe - a role that neither wants. These teens must master the "art" of taking life, knowing that the consequence of failure could mean losing their own.

Very fun, easy listen
Revisado: 03-26-24
Definitely a listen to speed up, I mostly listened on 1.2 speed and honestly could’ve sped up a little more, but really enjoyed both the performance and the story. Accessible, fun, not too long, and self contained enough that you don’t feel like you NEED to carry on with the series, but maybe you want to (I put the next one in my wishlist so I can circle back soon). Not a particularly challenging read, and there were several plot points that were easy to guess before they were revealed, but neither the author nor narrator treated them as shocking revelations you couldn’t possibly have guessed, so it felt honest in that sometimes we as an audience have more insight into what could happen in a story than the characters do or should. Definitely one I’d recommend easily to others, as even the sci-fi aspect of the setting is fairly light, casting an even wider net for an audience that would enjoy this work.

Historia
While he's not quite a household name, most people would consider H. Jon Benjamin, the voice-actor star of Archer and Bob's Burgers (and a sentient can of mixed vegetables in 2015's Wet Hot American Summer) a comedy show business success. But he'd like to remind everyone that as great as success can be, failure is also an option. In a hilarious, self-deprecating memoir, Jon lays out some of his many failures in all areas of life, from Work ("wherein I'm unable to deliver a sizzling fajita") to Family ("wherein a trip to PF Chang's fractures a family").

Disappointing
Revisado: 02-20-24
The writing is disjointed and disappointing, and unfortunately the author narrating doesn’t rectify this issue. It still sounds very much like someone reading out of a book they’re unfamiliar with, which is surprising given the author’s career. Takes a long time to actually start saying anything, and when it does it’s not worth the wait. Be aware there is some severe homophobic hate speech about halfway through (not the words of the author, but still included and no punches are pulled, it’s almost cavalier in its inclusion).

Historia
Jean McConville's abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.

An incredible history told well
Revisado: 01-08-24
I can’t stop saying wonderful things about this book (and its audio production). The story it tells is intriguing as it is important, keeping my attention glued to it throughout, and leading up into the present day, as in many ways it continues to unfold. If you’re reading this because you’re deciding whether to give this book a shot, this is your sign, do it.

Historia
At the turn of the 22nd century, scientists make a breakthrough in human spaceflight. Through a revolutionary method known as somaforming, astronauts can survive in hostile environments off Earth using synthetic biological supplementations. With the fragility of the body no longer a limiting factor, human beings are at last able to journey to neighboring exoplanets long known to harbor life. A team of these explorers, Ariadne O’Neill and her three crewmates, are hard at work in a planetary system 15 light-years from Sol, on a mission to ecologically survey four habitable worlds.

Old school sci-fi that feels modern
Revisado: 12-24-23
Just a wonderful, fun listen (loved the narration, perfect choice and excellent performance) with an old school exploratory sci-fi vibe, but without feeling dated. This was my first experience with this author, on the recommendation of a friend, and I’m very excited to look into some of their other work after this.

Like a touching episode of black mirror
Revisado: 11-29-23
This book was described to me as being like an episode of Black Mirror, so I was not entirely surprised by the content, but I was pleased at the emotional connection that is not always present in some dystopian near-future stories. I’d highly recommend this quick listen (or read since it’s so short!)

So glad I continued the series
Revisado: 11-29-23
I had low expectations after the first book in this series. I expected more of the same, knockoff of a classic tale as a vehicle for smut. The second and third books provided so much more. Drawing from a variety of mythologies but without letting a single story be the outright basis, and creating a riveting tale in the process. I also preferred this narrator to that of the previous books, who struck me as a bad actor with inconsistent pronunciations and inflections as if they weren’t comprehending what they were reading. This one wasn’t my favorite, but certainly passable.

"It began as a mistake." By middle age, Henry Chinaski has lost more than 12 years of his life to the U.S. Postal Service. In a world where his three true, bitter pleasures are women, booze, and racetrack betting, he somehow drags his hangover out of bed every dawn to lug waterlogged mailbags up mud-soaked mountains, outsmart vicious guard dogs, and pray to survive the day-to-day trials of sadistic bosses and certifiable coworkers.

Historia
Feyre has undergone more trials than one human woman can carry in her heart. Though she’s now been granted the powers and lifespan of the High Fae, she is haunted by her time Under the Mountain and the terrible deeds she performed to save the lives of Tamlin and his people. As her marriage to Tamlin approaches, Feyre’s hollowness and nightmares consume her. She finds herself split into two different people: one who upholds her bargain with Rhysand, High Lord of the feared Night Court, and one who lives out her life in the Spring Court with Tamlin.

So much better than the first
Revisado: 10-31-23
The first book felt like an unimpressively written smutty retelling of beauty and the beast. This one truly built out the world and relationships in a way that made me want to continue the series.
