Historia
Nearly 20 years in the making, Can't Buy Me Love is a masterful work of group biography, cultural history, and musical criticism. That the Beatles were an unprecedented phenomenon is a given. Here Jonathan Gould seeks to explain why, placing the Fab Four in the broad and tumultuous panorama of their time and place, rooting their story in the social context that girded both their rise and their demise.

Badly distorted audio
Revisado: 11-24-24
This is a great book but this Audible download suffers from very bad audio quality. I suspect the problem isn’t with the original recording but with Audible’s overly compressed, low bit rate digital copy.

Historia
Prosecuting attorney in the Manson trial Vincent Bugliosi held a unique insider's position in one of the most baffling and horrifying cases of the 20th century: the cold-blooded Tate-LaBianca murders carried out by Charles Manson and four of his followers. What motivated Manson in his seemingly mindless selection of victims, and what was his hold over the young women who obeyed his orders? Now available for the first time in unabridged audio, the gripping story of this famous and haunting crime is brought to life by acclaimed narrator Scott Brick.

Great audiobook but poor sound quality
Revisado: 07-24-24
While the book is excellent and the performance (narration) is excellent, the sound quality is surprisingly poor, marred by constant sibilance and distortion. It’s not so bad that it would bother everyone, so listen to the sample first to see if the audio quality is tolerable for you.

Historia
Historic Yellowstone National Park captures the most interesting moments in the park’s history, the slices of life in Montana and Wyoming that provide an idea of what life was like for those who chose to explore this gloriously beautiful corner of the United States. There’s the presence of Native Americans in the early years of the area’s history, the early explorers and expeditions, its debut as the very first national park, the explosive growth of tourism, and the people who made history in this astonishing and mysterious Rocky Mountain landscape.

Poor performance
Revisado: 12-10-23
A nicely written book that’s rendered totally unlistenable by the narration that is delivered in the same detached manner of a public-address announcer. I kept expecting her to intone, “Than you for calling. Your call is important to us….”

Historia
In 2003, software engineer David Miller left his job, family, and friends to hike 2,172 miles of the Appalachian Trail. AWOL on the Appalachian Trail is Miller’s account of this thru-hike from Georgia to Maine. Listeners are treated to rich descriptions of the Appalachian Mountains, the isolation and reverie, the inspiration that fueled his quest, and the rewards of taking a less conventional path through life. While this book abounds with introspection and perseverance, it also provides useful passages about hiking gear and planning.

Beautifully written, perfectly narrated
Revisado: 08-08-23
This trail memoir is probably the best I’ve ever read, nicely balancing trail details with the author’s insightful personal thoughts and pre-trail backstory. The individual reading or narrating this audio version captures every bit of the author’s dry wit. Highly recommended.

A compelling, engaging memoir
Revisado: 07-25-23
I don’t own any Kenny Loggins albums, but I’ve always admired his songwriting. This memoir shows him to be a thoughtful, self-aware and (normally) level-headed individual who takes his craft seriously and his rock-star status less so. He doesn’t shy away from writing about personal and professional conflicts with others, but he’s not one to simply assign blame to others. Quite the opposite, in fact. He’s fully aware of his own shortcomings and his insights along those lines are always self-effacing, entertaining and instructive. The writing and narration for this audiobook are first rate.

Historia
Teetering awkwardly on the brink of insanity, unable to handle life in snowy, cold, ultra-conservative North Idaho, Carl and Erin sold their house and set out in search of a new place to call home. Suddenly finding themselves completely free of responsibilities, jobless, and with a little spare cash in the bank, it didn't take long before their serious search for a new life took some unexpected twists and turns. This is the story of what day-to-day life is really like on one of America's greatest trails.

Terrible narration
Revisado: 05-31-21
The story is enjoyable enough but the narrator is awful. Or, to be more precise, the pacing of her narration is awful. Sentences that were written to resonate are delivered at a breakneck pace and there’s actually less of a pause between the sentences and the ends of chapters than there are between most clauses within sentences. I could tolerate the narration only by slowing the playback speed to an unnatural .8 To be fair, some of this could be due to poor editing, not the narrator herself.
