Not Dickens best (Freebie)
Revisado: 10-27-24
I got this as a freebie. the narrator is excellent. It was slower than my more favorite Dickens novels. The story is okay but on the whole I didn't much like the protagonist. Also didn't much like the ending. Glad I didn't use a credit.

Pretty awful
Revisado: 09-14-23
It was a challenge to finish this. The narrator was good and probably would have been better with different material. All throughout the first part of the story I was yelling in my head, who does that. Everything was so obvious. Just don't bother not even for free. cringe

Could Laura be more of a danger than the stranger she meets, or is the night before her last night alive?

Great book
Revisado: 06-07-23
Gripped me from the start. There is a fair amount of character development. I liked the occasional dry/sarcastic humor from Laura's character. I think there are some who have commented that the book was slow. I think it's just that the character development and getting into the heads of characters (i.e. psychology) isn't as interesting to some as others. And yes there will have to be some suspension of disbelief to really get into the book. These types of books are somewhat fantastical in the things that occur but there is a lot of psychology here that is believable. Just look around and you'll find plenty of actual human behavior that is more outrageous than what goes on in this book.
The narration was a pleasure to listen to. Both narrators never put the emphasis where to me, it didn't seem to belong. That is a big issue with some narrators. Of the two I liked Laura's narration best, it was really good. Another annoying thing that wasn't present here was random pauses between words and sentences. That can be so annoying. The words just flowed at a good pace. I'll be listening to more from Wendy Walker.

It's OK
Revisado: 05-17-23
This story is my least favorite in the series. The narrator is also my least favorite in the series. She pauses too long between words at random, and the same with sentences. Also she kind of sounds like she's pouting a lot. The story is OK but not as gripping as the story keeper which I heard first and thought was fantastic. You'll like it well enough if you want to complete the series I guess.

it's OK especially for free
Revisado: 03-15-23
This one was included. K L Slater for me is very hit or kinda miss. There's always something enjoyable about her books but often just ok. So when I run out of credits she's an easy pick for included listening for free. Narration is great as usual.
there isn't much action but at least until the end I couldn't say characters wouldn't behave that way. unfortunately it's all too common what goes on in this book. Sometimes in other of her books characters just do things that don't seem real. This one didn't suffer much from that at all.

Really good
Revisado: 03-12-23
As someone who is in a happy marriage, I could relate to a lot of the married life motif in the book. I can't really explain too much without giving things away. Guessed the ending more or less not too far in. But I think the author was just leading you there. Still the journey was good even if you knew the destination. Highly recommended.

All around excellent
Revisado: 01-23-23
Excellent fiction set in a largely ignored part of American history. I only recently found out about the events in which the story is set and went looking for good historical fiction to bring it to life. Well done both story and narration. Highly recommend.

Stupid Ending
Revisado: 01-03-23
All in all the book was OK but the ending was just bad and cliche. Characters doing things that are contrived that people really don't do. Still there are issues brought up that are thought provoking. So it's a neutral 3 stars. Performance was very good though.
