Historia
Jack Diller is just one more struggling actor on the road to nowhere. He’s got an agent who barely remembers his name, his ex-girlfriend has hooked up with a Silicon Valley dude, and the milk in his fridge is so far past its sell-by date it’s historic. The only way Jack can scrape together a bare existence is by delivering food to exactly the types of successful people he wishes he could be. Then, one day, a very strange audiobook shows up on his phone.

What a downer
Revisado: 08-18-22
Wheaton's narration was excellent as usual.
The story is overall very depressing and not my style. Some mild black humor. The story is fairly well executed.

Good story, too much action
Revisado: 05-12-22
I liked the premise if the story, the wind up, the pitch, etc. As always Clines writes with a good tight style. But the story is just one fighting action scene after another, so much so that it became something of a xhore to finish the book.

Good performance and top notch stories. The description did not tell which stories were in the collection. The omission of Ye Hogge was a cardinal sin to me, my favorite Carnacki tale.

Historia
Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.

Excellent Short Tale
Revisado: 04-05-19
Very interesting mystery with a science fiction premise. Scalzi has written a great What If in the best tradition of science fiction. If you allow the one fantastical premise that people start coming back from death under certain circumstances, how does that change our society. His description of what happens is quite clear and logical. He wraps this up nicely in a mystery puzzle.
Quinto does an excellent job of bringing the story to life.

Government Big Data is Powerful and Important
Revisado: 10-01-18
Excellent description of the value of government collected data on our society. Some great examples in agriculture and weather. An interesting aspect is that the mountains of data collected over the past decades is only now becoming useful by placing it on the cloud and using modern data mining tools. It also unfortunately describes the pernicious influence of the Trump administration to eliminate government access to such data for the exclusive use of influential businesses who will then sell it back to us.

Revisado: 11-25-15
Great listen. This is the male equivalent of fantasy/horror "Chicklit" . That is, light inconsequential literature in a supernatural vein with a strong dose of wish fulfillment. In this case, the wish fulfillment is male. Perhaps we should call this "Guylit". It was just the escapist book I was in the mood for.

Historia
Superintelligence asks the questions: What happens when machines surpass humans in general intelligence? Will artificial agents save or destroy us? Nick Bostrom lays the foundation for understanding the future of humanity and intelligent life. The human brain has some capabilities that the brains of other animals lack. It is to these distinctive capabilities that our species owes its dominant position. If machine brains surpassed human brains in general intelligence, then this new superintelligence could become extremely powerful - possibly beyond our control.

Dense but interesting and important
Revisado: 10-10-15
Describes the necessary thought required BEFORE we create superintelligence. It often reads like SF except it isn't. Makes the strong point that we are in existential danger if we don't address the key issues before we develop some form of machine intelligence.

Historia
Even today, the influence of Ancient Rome is indelible, with Europe and the world owing this extraordinary empire a huge cultural debt in almost every important category of human endeavor, including art, architecture, engineering, language, literature, law, and religion. At the peak of its power, Rome's span was vast. In the regional, restless, and shifting history of continental Europe, the Roman Empire stands as a towering monument to scale and stability, unified in politics and law, stretching from the sands of Syria to the moors of Scotland. And it stood for almost 700 years. In this series of 48 spirited lectures, you'll see how a small village of shepherds and farmers rose to tower over the civilized world of its day and left a permanent mark on history. In telling Rome's riveting story, Professor Fagan draws on a wealth of primary and secondary sources, including recent historical and archaeological scholarship, to introduce the fascinating tale of Rome's rise and decline, including the famous events and personalities that have become so familiar: . Horatius at the bridge . Hannibal crossing the Alps during Rome's life-or-death war with Carthage . Caesar assassinated before a statue of his archrival Pompey . The doomed lovers Antony and Cleopatra . The mad and venal emperors Nero and Caligula . The conversion of Constantine The course also addresses one of history's greatest questions: Why did the Roman Empire fall? And you'll learn why most modern scholars believe that the empire did not "fall" at all, but, rather, changed into something very different-the less urbanized, more rural, early medieval world.

Historia
The word "barbarian" quickly conjures images of Attila the Hun and Genghis Khan. Yet few people realize these men belong to a succession of nomadic warriors who emerged from the Eurasian steppes to conquer civilizations. It's a part of ancient and medieval history that's often overlooked, but for an accurate view of how the world evolved, it's essential. Covering some 6,000 miles and 6,000 years, this eye-opening course illuminates how a series of groups pushed ever westward, coming into contact with the Roman Empire, Han China, and distant cultures from Iraq to India.
