Historia
While researching the toxic and addictive properties of sugar for Fat Chance, Robert Lustig made an alarming discovery - our pursuit of happiness is being subverted by a culture of addiction and depression from which we may never recover. Dopamine is the "reward" neurotransmitter that tells our brains we want more; yet every substance or behavior that releases dopamine in the extreme leads to addiction. Serotonin is the "contentment" neurotransmitter that tells our brains we don't need any more; yet its deficiency leads to depression.

Yes, absolutely
Revisado: 07-08-22
This book was as thorough, enlightening, and as captivating, as I hoped. I’ve been familiar with many of the concepts Dr. Lustig presents here via his talks and videos found all over the internet. They’ve made a difference in my and my family’s lives. The book however, ties it all together and goes into areas the videos don’t.
When one’s become tired of only treating symptoms, it’s time to look deeper and begin addressing causes. The doctor explains the biochemistry behind many of our problems. Because of this gift, I found myself taking many notes and ultimately buying the print edition as well to make it easier to refer back to and learn the science, because this information needs to be shared.
Yes, absolutely; it worth the read/listen or better yet both. Thank you Dr. Lustig.

Historia
In early 1970, artist Ralph Steadman went to America in search of work and found more than he bargained for. At the Kentucky Derby, he met a former Hell's Angel, one Hunter S. Thompson. Thompson wrote later that "The rest of that day blurs into madness. The rest of that night, too. Steadman was lucky to get out of Louisville without serious injuries, and I was lucky to get out at all." Thus began a 30-year friendship and a working relationship that gave birth to what became known as Gonzo Journalism.

Words for longing hearts, ears, eyes
Revisado: 07-27-21
For the length of this audiobook, I was able to re-experience the joys, laughter and shock I felt back in my 20s when I would binge read anything I could get my hands on, from HST. For me, to experience Thompson through his stories was to also experience Ralph Steadman. His Collaborator. It was a package-deal, I think.
Which is what makes this book, so special. To absorb his words and thoughts, personal and thought provoking, is really the long awaited for gift. The gift of “being there” again. And the gift of getting to know this great artist a bit more than before. Ralph Steadman, thank you for this book. You’ve made many of my days.

Historia
As soon as the financial crisis erupted, the finger-pointing began. Should the blame fall on Wall Street, Main Street, or Pennsylvania Avenue? On greedy traders, misguided regulators, sleazy subprime companies, cowardly legislators, or clueless home buyers? According to Bethany McLean and Joe Nocera, two of America's most acclaimed business journalists, the real answer is all of the above-and more. Many devils helped bring hell to the economy.

Strange mid-paragraph edits
Revisado: 10-11-20
While the story is very interesting, the editing and excessive mid-paragraph / mid-sentence cuts and edits of audio that don’t match proved too distracting to deal with. Unfortunate.

Historia
Rand Fishkin, the founder and former CEO of Moz, reveals how traditional Silicon Valley "wisdom" leads far too many startups astray, with the transparency and humor that his hundreds of thousands of blog readers have come to love. Everyone knows how a startup story is supposed to go: A young, brilliant entrepreneur has a cool idea, drops out of college, defies the doubters, overcomes all odds, makes billions, and becomes the envy of the technology world. This is not that story. It's not that things went badly for Rand Fishkin; they just weren't quite so Zuckerberg-esque.

Fine enough
Revisado: 06-25-20
I appreciated the author’s realistic perspective and aim debunking the standard, curated Silicon Valley-isms, we’ve come to associate with the tech startup world. The story of the company wasn’t terribly interesting, but reality sometimes isn’t.

A story worth telling in the way that Levy does
Revisado: 06-11-20
Though I don’t come from any position to judge the accuracy of what Levy wrote, from an average reader’s perspective, the book seems unbiased and thorough in it’s telling of a story that continues to unfold today. I feel like I know so much more now about Facebook and the companies it acquired. I suppose at ~19 hours it may be long for some, but it never felt so to me, as the narration was excellent. Books such as this provide inspiration and caution, both of which I hope are taken to heart by anyone who reads it, particularly those on the path of entrepreneurship. Society romances the misguided ideal of being “uncompromising” in all of one’s values, and celebrates people driven to pursue their dreams and passions “at all costs.” That is, until fraud, manipulation, erosion of privacy, and the like, surface as those costs. History provides us with the guide we can use to become better and more responsible in what we do, and gives an idea of what pitfalls may lie ahead to be avoided, but it’s only useful if one takes the time to open it.

Historia
Who understood the risk inherent in the assumption of ever-rising real-estate prices, a risk compounded daily by the creation of those arcane, artificial securities loosely based on piles of doubtful mortgages? Michael Lewis turns the inquiry on its head to create a fresh, character-driven narrative brimming with indignation and dark humor, a fitting sequel to his number-one best-selling Liar’s Poker.

So glad for this book, and will be reading/listening to it again very soon. Really explains a lot about this gross event that hopefully never happens again in our lifetime. Thank you Michael Lewis.
