Once upon a time, smart innovative gutsy entrepreneurs created businesses that would become both the beating hearts and life blood of our modern tech-enabled society.

Policymakers of the time wisely determined that in order to control price and ensure broad reliable access to the essential resource, it was necessary to regulate the natural monopoly.

Policymakers would later, at the behest of men who fashioned themselves the smartest in the room, tragically undue that regulation to devastating and crippling effect. Affordable wasn’t enough, we wanted cheap. But as is usually the case, cheap doesn’t go hand in hand with safe or reliable.

This is an essential and well-written cautionary tale, and reminder that in this world we ignore human nature and the power of appropriate incentives at our own peril. Corporate greed and public greed are both dangerous things to enable.

I am convinced that once you have had the time to digest the lessons and insights shared in this book, It will be impossible to view the world the way you did before. Dr. Perry and Oprah Winfrey have done the work of laying out not only the “what” and “why” but also their compelling view of the “what now.”

I recall having the passing but recurring thought over the years that what we Americans refer to as “race” is actually a form of “caste.” A child instinctively knows that “black” and “white” are poor adjectives by which to distinguish the beautiful rainbow of human beings we encounter in our daily lives. But yet, we shrug our shoulders and eventually fall in line, many of us, with what society teaches us is the appropriate methodology, and the stereotypes that are true to “Black” and “White” culture.

Never have I stopped long enough to flesh out the thought of race as caste and racism as the remnants of a broken but still insidious and destructive caste system - but in Isabel Wilkerson’s latest tome, she reveals the work she has done over the years to put meat on those bones. It is a great read, and one I highly recommend.

A clear-eyed telling of a story that is as heartwarming as it is heartbreaking. As you move through their stories, you can’t help but be changed in some way by the long look into the lives and journeys of Wes and Wes. These are the stories of men that are often portrayed in one form or another, but rarely fairly understood. Perhaps this book will change that.

An honest and unabashedly opinionated memoir. This is not a fluff piece crafted with an eye towards a future run for office, but is rather a baring of the soul. Probably one of the most transparent and authentically introspective writings you’ll read from a politico, young or old.

Masterless Men illuminates a seldom explored portion of the story of American slavery, and exposes the peculiar institution as one that was not simply aimed at perpetuating one racial class’s oppression of another racial class. Instead it paints the arguably more complete picture of American slavery as a system whereby both slaves of African or African American descent and so-called poor or middling class whites were exploited so that members of the planter class could secure all of their labor at below market wages or no wage at all.

If more people were acquainted with this part of the story, one can’t help but wonder how it would impact modern-day debates about wage and labor rights.

Malcolm Gladwell has done it again! Using the information available from several seemingly unrelated occurrences, Gladwell illuminates the often untold story that underlies and would explain the controversial narratives that leave us frustrated confused and divided in its absence.

I must admit that when I began listening to this audio book I rolled my eyes at the author's conceptualization of assimilation, antiracist and racist. But as I continued listening and reflecting, that initial dismissal was replaced by a since of familiarity, like being reminded of a truth forgotten. This book is a revelation, and worthy of your time and consideration.

For any who seek to better understand or improve society, this book is essential reading. If the concepts identified and explored in this book could be effectively distilled, disseminated to, and internalized by the masses, we would almost certainly enjoy significantly improved quality of life. What a book!
