Historia
Anne and Marco Conti seem to have it all—a loving relationship, a wonderful home, and their beautiful baby, Cora. But one night, when they are at a dinner party next door, a terrible crime is committed. Suspicion immediately lands on the parents. But the truth is a much more complicated story.

Predictable and Ridiculous
Revisado: 09-16-16
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Characters needed more depth. How can you possibly feel sorry for all these self-serving people? Even from the first few pages we learn that Anne and Marco have made the decision to leave an infant at home alone so they can attend a dinner party. Ludacris.
What was most disappointing about Shari Lapena’s story?
With two-dimensional characters and telenovela-worthy plot "twists", I did not enjoy this book. The story is driven by characters that the reader/listener can't possibly feel anything for. The only character worthy of sympathy is the missing baby, as she is the center of the selfishness surrounding the adults' lives.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Although the narrator but forth effort, the constant edge and urgency in her voice did not guide me as a listener through the story. Perhaps this was intentional, so the listener would feel the "tension" of the situation and experience the events of the story as the characters are experiencing it, but it was ineffective. Narration ended up just being grating.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Couple Next Door?
Main plot twists were revealed far too early in the story (supposing you didn't see them coming a mile away in the first place).
Any additional comments?
Sigh. I watch lots of Lifetime and this isn't even worthy of a Lifetime made-for-tv-movie script.

Bono met his wife in high school, Park says. So did Jerry Lee Lewis, Eleanor answers. I’m not kidding, he says. You should be, she says, we’re 16. What about Romeo and Juliet? Shallow, confused, then dead. I love you, Park says. Wherefore art thou, Eleanor answers. I’m not kidding, he says. You should be. Set over the course of one school year in 1986, this is the story of two star-crossed misfits - smart enough to know that first love almost never lasts, but brave and desperate enough to try. When Eleanor meets Park, you’ll remember your own first love.

Meh
Revisado: 03-08-16
I enjoyed some aspects of the story: character description, setting, the moments that are supposed to be nostalgic of your first love. I couldn't stand certain characters, however. I don't really care to read about people who are doormats. Very two-dimensional overall. Story was too superficial for me.

Superb narration brings life to classic story
Revisado: 12-15-15
I recall struggling through reading The Jungle in high school. I enjoyed the story but found the thickness of the names and language difficult as a teenager. Casey Affleck's narration of this story is truly spectacular. He brings life to the flow of the text as well as each character. Fantastic. Made me love this story in a way I wasn't able to years ago but wanted to.

Historia
What if—whoosh, right now, with no explanation—a number of us simply vanished? Would some of us collapse? Would others of us go on, one foot in front of the other, as we did before the world turned upside down? That's what the bewildered citizens of Mapleton, who lost many of their neighbors, friends and lovers in the event known as the Sudden Departure, have to figure out. Because nothing has been the same since it happened—not marriages, not friendships, not even the relationships between parents and children.

Hidden gem
Revisado: 09-14-15
I love Tom Perrotta's writing. I was also very intrigued by the plot of this novel. Perrotta makes a fantastical scenario relatable. Having read it years ago I was very impressed with Denis Boutsikaris' narration and his ability to further bring Perrotta's characters to life. This book is one I revisit often.
