Historia
"No killing Goblins." So reads the sign outside of The Wandering Inn, a small building run by a young woman named Erin Solstice. She serves pasta with sausage, blue fruit juice, and dead acid flies on request. And she comes from another world. Ours. It's a bad day when Erin finds herself transported to a fantastical world and nearly gets eaten by a Dragon. She doesn't belong in a place where monster attacks are a fact of life, and where Humans are one species among many. But she must adapt to her new life. Or die.

Couldn't handle the protagonist
Revisado: 09-30-24
Like many others, I just couldn't handle spending anymore time with that protagonist. She's both intellectually and emotionally severely lacking and I found myself feeling more frustrated or irritated with how she rationalized or how slow she was to remember or figure things out on her own. It felt like the author was treating her like an extremely ignorant child even though she's supposed to be 20 years old. Similarly, I thought the voice actress was talented, but she voiced the protagonist as if she were a whiny 12 year old anime girl. It was less grating than the writing, but there was no way I was going to make it through 40 hours of this.

Historia
Area X has been cut off from the rest of the continent for decades. Nature has reclaimed the last vestiges of human civilization. The first expedition returned with reports of a pristine, Edenic landscape; all the members of the second expedition committed suicide; the third expedition died in a hail of gunfire as its members turned on one another; the members of the eleventh expedition returned as shadows of their former selves, and within months of their return, all had died of aggressive cancer.

Strongly influenced by Lovecraft in the best possible way
Revisado: 09-07-24
The writing style was strongly reminiscent of Lovecraft, but it didn't feel like it was trying to emulate Lovecraft. This was my first Jeff VanderMeer book and I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. I love the movie that was based on this book, but they're definitely different and both are great. If you like Lovecraft, you will absolutely love the prose, this particular style of horror, and the pacing. The narrator was totally sufficient, I have no idea what some other reviewers were complaining about.

Historia
A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

Rip-roaring fun and a sensational narrator
Revisado: 02-02-23
I don't think I've EVER had this much fun listening to an audiobook before and the narrator is absolutely god-tier. I normally finish a book of this length in about 2 weeks, listening casually whenever I get a chance, but it's day 2 and I'm already almost done with this book. I can't stop listening!

Historia
Earth and its society have been changed irrevocably in the aftermath of Ender Wiggin's victory over the Formics. The unity forced upon the warring nations by an alien enemy has shattered. Nations are rising again, seeking territory and influence, and most of all, seeking to control the skills and loyalty of the children from the Battle School. But one person has a better idea. Peter Wiggin, Ender's older, more ruthless, brother, sees that any hope for the future of Earth lies in restoring a sense of unity and purpose. And he has an irresistible call on the loyalty of Earth's young warriors.

This book may have ruined the entire series for me
Revisado: 10-22-21
Where to start... Peter is demoted from an evil and malicious mastermind to a bumbling teenage idiot. Petra is suddenly obsessed with making babies with Bean, who's still barely a teenager, but never mind that little detail. They go to the genius geneticist who created Anton's key, the secret to Bean's brilliant mind, who goes on a multi-page rant about how every man and woman in the world craves having a relationship with a member of the opposite sex more than anything else, even if they're gay, so they can make babies, even if they don't realize it, and this is the meaning of life. The Mormon ideology is so thick it's nauseating and it feels so shoehorned into these characters' personalities and ability to rationalize and make decisions. Petra is artificially inseminated and the extra embryos are stolen. Scott Card makes sure we all know those embryos are actually babies already and that's how every character refers to and thinks about them for the rest of the book, "Petra's babies." I'm curious what happened to Ender after he left Earth and for that reason alone I may read another of Card's books, but this one was awful. The actual world war developing with each major nation having it's own battle school strategist influencing events gets maybe 3 whole chapters devoted to it.

Historia
Kevin Mitnick was the most elusive computer break-in artist in history. He accessed computers and networks at the world’s biggest companies—and however fast the authorities were, Mitnick was faster, sprinting through phone switches, computer systems, and cellular networks. He spent years skipping through cyberspace, always three steps ahead and labeled unstoppable.

Excellent, Compelling, Riveting
Revisado: 09-16-20
This has been one of my favorite autobiographies to date. Kevin's story for the first two acts is exciting, fascinating, anxiety inducing, and ultimately tragic. But the hardships he faces are what make the redemption he finally finds in the final chapter so elating. I've learned so much from this book and developed a deep respect and sympathy for Kevin, someone I felt I could have been good friends with if I had been born a couple decades earlier. The narrator also does an excellent job of not just dictating clearly, but really capturing the tone of the text in a way that feels natural and enjoyable to listen to. I would give this book 6 stars if I could because it stands above so many other books I've given 5 star reviews to in the past.

Historia
Sandman Slim must save himself - and the entire world - from the wrath of some enraged and vengeful ancient gods in this sixth high-octane adventure in the New York Times best-selling series. Being a half-human, half-angel nephilim with a bad rep and a worse attitude - not to mention temporarily playing Lucifer - James Stark, aka Sandman Slim, has made a few enemies. None, though, are as fearsome as the vindictive Angra Om Ya - the old gods.

A fun, guilty pleasure
Revisado: 04-25-20
These novels are a fantastic diversion during tumultuous times and I think this is one of the best in the series so far. MacLeod Andrews does an excellent job creating new and interesting voices for the ever growing cast of characters that always seem to mesh so well with how each character is perceived. These books would make a great modern TV series, I hope someone is able to bring them to life on the screen some day.

Historia
On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

A good King novel, but a great narration.
Revisado: 09-24-19
As far as Stephen King books go this one isn't one of my favorites. I enjoyed it and of course it's very well written. Interestingly my favorite part of the book was the ending which King said he got from his son and fellow writer, Joe Hill. The narration, however, is really A+ work. I've listened to maybe a dozen King novels on Audible and the narration is always great, but this one is really exemplary. The way the narrator emotes certain scenes is chilling.

Historia
Lisey lost her husband, Scott, two years ago, after a 25-year marriage of profound and sometimes frightening intimacy. Scott was an award-winning, best-selling novelist and a very complicated man. Early in their relationship, before they married, Lisey knew there was a place Scott went - a place that both terrified and healed him, could eat him alive or give him the ideas he needed in order to live. Now it’s Lisey’s turn to face Scott’s demons, to go to that terrifying place known as Boo’ya Moon.

Great Story, Immaculate Narration
Revisado: 02-28-19
I think I've listened to 9 King books in the last year. This one is great, as they often are. It starts slow and sucks you into a world that seems mundane at first, but is truly enchanting upon deeper inspection. What really inspired me to write this review, however, is Mare Winningham's performance as the narrator. She deftly breaths life into each character in a way that's completely and utterly immersive and compelling. I can't imagine reading this story without her voice guiding my perceptions of the characters.
