Historia
AD 3580. The Intersolar Commonwealth has spread through the galaxy to over a thousand star systems. It is a culture of rich diversity with a place for everyone. Even death itself has been overcome. But at the centre of the Commonwealth is a massive black hole. This Void is not a natural artefact. Inside there is a strange universe where the laws of physics are very different to those we know. It is slowly consuming the other stars of the galactic core - one day it will devour the entire galaxy.

Cool plot. Eager to read the next.
Revisado: 08-29-24
A very nice and enticing plot with a few crumbs for the Pandora readers, but new readers wouldn't feel left out.
The performance was generally ok, but several choices were just bad (especially some nasal female voices or hoarse voices).

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet.

What a fun listen
Revisado: 08-01-22
For the longest time I've been avoiding this book because I watched the movie (which is also good) and knew what happens in the story and because it's a relatively short audiobook.
This is all still true. The audio is short and the movie is very faithful to the book (in fact, whole sections of it were incorporated as-is into the script) and still! I enjoyed it immensely.
And Wil Wheaton does a very good job too. <3

Historia
Of all the weavers of magic, there is none like Lord Dunsany. During his long lifetime he wrote more than 60 books including novels, plays, poetry collections and most memorably, innumerable exotic and fantastical short stories. Here is the very best of Dunsany's extraordinarily evocative tales of Faerie, of dreamworlds and of magic.

Some hits, few misses
Revisado: 07-20-22
Lord Dunsany's contribution to fantasy as we know it is indisputably priceless and I often felt that this story or that must have been the inspiration for other works I know. On its own, though, this collection has some hits and a few misses.
It's exciting to think about it as (I think) the first (or at least one of the first) attempts at writing a fictional mythology and it does a good job at it too, but at some points it feels a bit tedious. Surprisingly, it's actually the less mythology-related works that are better. It has been a good read (listen) but I can't say I wasn't slightly relieved to start a new audiobook after that one.
While both performers read very clearly, Emma Powell's narration, which is full of well-fitting pathos, is FAR superior to David Thorpe's ever oddly-bemused narration. I'd prefer it if more of the stories, if not all, were read by her.
A final note about the editing - not a good job. Here and there some tracks were broken and the entire final part of the book which is a collection of many short stories is edited (or unedited) as one single chunk of uninterrupted audio.

Historia
One man—visionary billionaire restaurant chain magnate T. R. Schmidt, Ph.D.—has a Big Idea for reversing global warming, a master plan perhaps best described as “elemental.” But will it work? Ranging from the Texas heartland to the Dutch royal palace in the Hague, from the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas to the sunbaked Chihuahuan Desert, Termination Shock brings together a disparate group of characters from different cultures and continents who grapple with the real-life repercussions of global warming.

Another Neal Stephenson gem
Revisado: 01-18-22
This (sadly) very relevant story is just oozing with planet-level knowledge, insights and research, evident behind every sentence.
All the characters are loveable and relatable and the plot is compelling.
A very good read.
The narration is clear and very competent, presenting an essential plethora of accents while minding diction.

Historia
The once-utopian Chasm City - a domed human settlement on an otherwise inhospitable planet---has been overrun by a virus known as the Melding Plague, capable of infecting any body, organic or computerized. Now, with the entire city corrupted - from the people to the very buildings they inhabit---only the most wretched sort of existence remains. The stakes are raised when Tanner Mirabel's search brings him face to face with a centuries-old atrocity that history would rather forget.

Interesting. A little too convoluted.
Revisado: 10-10-21
The book tells several stories. Some nice and some awesome. Their convergence, however, makes the whole thing a bit overly convoluted.
In addition, the main characters' motives and choices don't always seem to make much sense (if there is any sense in following any motives at all in a future that offers such fluidity of body-and-mind as the book describes).
But all in all it was a good read with lots of interesting ideas.

Historia
The war raged across the galaxy. Billions had died, billions more were doomed. Moons, planets, the very stars themselves, faced destruction - cold-blooded, brutal, and worse, random. The Idirans fought for their Faith; the Culture for its moral right to exist. Principles were at stake. There could be no surrender. Within the cosmic conflict, an individual crusade....

Ok
Revisado: 05-11-21
For a while the plot seems like it's filling up time while diverting from the main story arc, which is interesting, but not outstanding.
The narration is generally good, with the right stress on the right words, but the dialogues of more than a few characters come out incomprehensible.

Historia
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

Revisado: 10-07-19
While not actually sci-fi, the story still caters to sci-fi fans and does a great job at it.
The plot twists and turns rapidly, leaving you at the edge of your seat - no small feat for a >30 hours long good story. An absolute bargain for 1 credit.
The performer reads clearly and consistently, alternating seamlessly between an impressive arsenal of accents and characters.

Historia
Belisarius is a quantum man, an engineered Homo quantus who fled the powerful insight of dangerously addictive quantum senses. He found a precarious balance as a con man, but when a client offers him untold wealth to move a squadron of warships across an enemy wormhole, he must embrace his birthright to even try. In fact, the job is so big that he'll need a crew built from all the new sub-branches of humanity. If he succeeds, he might trigger an interstellar war, but success might also point the way to the next step of Homo quantus evolution.

Excellent story. Mediocre performance.
Revisado: 06-05-19
I thoroughly enjoyed the plot, the characters, the setting and the sci-fi. This piece has some truly original and exciting ideas.
Unfortunately, the performance doesn't do it justice. It's clear that the performer is very capable, but some of his choices were poor and disruptive. Specifically, his "action mode" where he reads text very intensely and way too fast and his general tendency to over-imbue the non-verbal text with the characters' flavor.
