Historia
Cassie Andrews works in a New York City bookshop, shelving books, making coffee for customers, and living an unassuming, ordinary life. Until the day one of her favorite customers—a lonely yet charming old man—dies right in front of her. Cassie is devastated. She always loved his stories, and now she has nothing to remember him by. Nothing but the last book he was reading. But this is no ordinary book… It is the Book of Doors. Inscribed with enigmatic words and mysterious drawings, it promises Cassie that any door is every door. You just need to know how to open them.

Well written and the best of adventures
Revisado: 11-14-24
This is the best book I have read in a very long time. well written, very twisty, and so magnificent. Narration is near perfect, and I have been recommending this one to everyone I know!

Historia
The quest for peace and protection in Britain has passed down from the Merlin and Arthur the Pendragon to the sole survivor, Resmiranda Griffin. Raised in the Christian tradition, she refuses to acknowledge her magical talents or the existence of helpful fairies, until dark forces force her into the complex politics, both mundane and magical, that divides England from their lawful king, John Plantagenet. Inspired by a demon, her distant cousin Radburn Blakely whispers divisive advice into John’s ear.

Well known tie-ins for a great story
Revisado: 01-09-17
I stumbled on this series by sheer accident or rather luck. The first book was so good, I took a chance on another. The characters are well developed and the heroin and antagonist stories are told in parallel. Robin Hood makes an appearance as an Earl, along with a new Pendragon and the reappearance of Excaliber. The narration is very, very good with definitive differences in character inflections. Don't skip the epilogue!
On to Book 3!

Historia
My name is Hope Arden, and you won't know who I am. But we've met before—a thousand times. It started when I was 16 years old. A father forgetting to drive me to school. A mother setting the table for three, not four. A friend who looks at me and sees a stranger. No matter what I do, the words I say, the crimes I commit, you will never remember who I am. That makes my life difficult. It also makes me dangerous. The Sudden Appearance of Hope is a riveting and heartbreaking exploration of identity and existence, about a forgotten girl whose story will stay with you forever.

Absolutely incredible (no spoilers, promise)
Revisado: 05-24-16
I don't often write reviews due to the repetition, but I am astounded. This story weaves an emotional journey of loneliness, covert existence, neuroscience, conspiracy, corporate espionage, and the possibilities of the "big data phenomenon" all rolled up into an incredibly well-written, smooth-flowing tale.
A work of good fiction needs believability, and even if audacious, the reader can sit back and think, "What if?" I have caught myself doing this again and again. As well, this is not one of those books where the listener has a good idea of the ending long before you get there which, in my opinion, only makes the story that much better.
If this author continues at this caliber, I expect to see a very long and distinguished career. The narration was smooth and well-matched to the story.

Why we think it’s a great listen: An all-time Audible favorite that mixes historic fiction, adventure, and romance with one of the most fascinating literary devices: time travel. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love. In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. But their blissful reunion is shattered....

A slightly slow start but worth the wait
Revisado: 01-12-14
Would you listen to Outlander again? Why?
I would, and I did. It is a long one, but it is an adventure worth repeating.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Jenny - a secondary character who as a nursing mom went out to search for her brother, at least for a short time, and took a kidnapper hostage to find out where he was by knocking him over the head with a rock and tying him to a tree. (They did let the man go)
Have you listened to any of Davina Porter’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I honestly don't know, but she does well with the different accents including Scottish with ease. Very expressive and accurate narration.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Several, but one is particularly intriguing... Claire gets a message from a condemned "witch" who says she is not sure it is possible and a year. Opens the door for a lot of possibilities for the series.
Any additional comments?
I will be devouring this series.

Historia
Victoria McQueen has an uncanny knack for finding things: a misplaced bracelet, a missing photograph, answers to unanswerable questions. When she rides her bicycle over the rickety old covered bridge in the woods near her house, she always emerges in the places she needs to be. Vic doesn't tell anyone about her unusual ability, because she knows no one will believe her. She has trouble understanding it herself.

All the elements of a great novel
Revisado: 07-12-13
What did you love best about NOS4A2?
The heroin Vic, starts her story as a young girl with the dream bike we all wanted in one way or another. Her imagination becomes a form of reality and her adventures bring the reader right back to their days of adventure out on their bikes as kids. The supernatural elements are well done and believable, and nothing is over done. It is a story of adventure, redemption, and heroism that exists in many forms.
Who was your favorite character and why?
While the main character, Vic, has the spotlight, Lou was my favorite. He calls everybody "dude", and is one of those extremely nice people who you root for throughout the story. He is a hero in his own right in all of the ways a good parent can be.
What about Kate Mulgrew’s performance did you like?
The voices and expression were very well done. She does a great voice for our evil Charlie Manx and the stammering Maggie Lee. She even pulls off a convincing Boston accent without missing a beat. I am and audiobook addict, and this is one of the best narrators I have encountered.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
There are moments of laughter and moments that tug at the heart strings, but again, nothing was overdone. I would recommend not listening to the third part alone in the dark, however.
Any additional comments?
For a long novel, the story is so well done that it holds the reader's attention throughout without the dry spots or dredging unneeded details. This is my first book by this author, but it wont be my last.

A true must read..WOW
Revisado: 04-19-07
If I could rate this with more stars, I would. The book is extremely well written, and the ending was surprising and very good! This book makes a lot of references to "The Great Gatsby", and it is very interesting to see the possible "sequel" in theory anyway. I just finished this and will probably listen to it all over again!

Maybe it was a grandparent, or a teacher, or a colleague. Someone older, patient and wise, who understood you when you were young and searching, helped you see the world as a more profound place, gave you sound advice to help you make your way through it. For Mitch Albom, that person was Morrie Schwartz, his college professor from nearly 20 years ago.
