Mostly Amazing Story, Mostly Amazing Narration
Revisado: 10-28-24
I really enjoyed this story, and Raquel Woodruff’s narration truly brought the character to life. Her performance was captivating and added depth to the narrative.
While the male narrator, Brandon T. Campbell, didn’t quite match her energy, I still appreciated his effort. It was a bit of a contrast, but the strength of the story made it easy to stay engaged. Overall, it’s a compelling read, and Woodruff’s narration is a highlight!

In April 2002, Janine Latus' youngest sister, Amy, wrote a note and taped it to the inside of her desk drawer. "Today Ron Ball and I are romantically involved", it read, "but I fear I have placed myself at risk in a variety of ways. Based on his criminal past, writing this out just seems like the smart thing to do. If I am missing or dead this obviously has not protected me...."

A "Must" Read
Revisado: 06-12-24
I wish more people wrote interestingly enough about the recent past so we could constantly remember why we must stay vigilant in protecting our liberties. As a middle-aged woman born in the 70s, I found this book's depiction of the early/pre-feminist movement to be accurate. It underscores the importance of protecting these hard-won gains. We must keep writing and reading about the past to ensure it doesn't repeat itself, and this book excels in achieving that goal.
One review of this book claimed that Janine was superior-acting or dismissive of men for insignificant reasons. I believe that Janine isn't actually just Janine; she represents many women of her generation and those before her, who were treated as property of men, without identities or rights of their own. These women were often not allowed to develop into their own beings capable of genuine feelings. Of course, Janine would have these off-putting sentiments. She was a product of the constant abuse from men, who were always targeting her for all the wrong reasons. We were ALL Janine at some point.
The constant beatings, which many women believed they deserved, were a horrifying norm. I appreciated how the author simply stated what was considered normal at the time. The narrator did an excellent job delivering a hard-to-hear, "blow-by-blow" account of the worst aspects of the 70s.
Not only am I glad I listened to this book, but I also feel that we, as women, should encourage our daughters to listen to this nightmare of a life we once endured. We walked so they could run.

One of the Best!
Revisado: 06-28-22
I have a suggestion, read this book then immediately read Freida's other title The Wife Upstairs. It'll add another layer on top of the multitude of layers already going on in both books. It's like they were meant to be read in sequence. You'll know why when you finish both.
The Housemaid on it's own is fantastic too!! I felt like I spent quality time w/interesting ppl w/incredible drama to overcome in a relatable, relevant manner. Everything in this book was on point, perfectly imperfect characters, timing, the suspense -all of it was really well done. Now I have terrible interim book syndrome (IBS) till I find another book this good.

This would make a great movie. Excellent writing, legit suspense and an interesting, strong believable woman. The narration was intense. 3 words in you're like "holy $#!t, they literally made this work". A couple pages in you're more like "I need this!". Troy was so hot, such a boss. L.J. Shen wrote a bad ass sexy character and Michael Pauley killed w/his performance of him. Those 2 need to do more work together!

Neal Stephenson is a blazing new force on the sci-fi scene. With the groundbreaking cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, he has "vaulted onto the literary stage." It weaves virtual reality, Sumerian myth, and just about everything in between with a cool, hip cybersensibility - in short, it is the gigathriller of the information age.

Loved the whole ride!! How is the awesome, consensual, sex encounter such an insult to some reviewing here? The strong, boss 15 year old female was the best part! Never read a book where every single character was so memorable. Never a dull moment, was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Even during the librarian speak. GET THIS! Almost could read it again 🤘🏻

Wow! A Stephen King Book I Didn't Love
Revisado: 04-09-20
Not that the book was terrible in any way. Just super blah. Because it was King, the characters are interesting, likable, have worthy lives and do believable things. It felt like an author trying to write like King and the story never got heart pumping, blood boiling and tear inducing like most all other King novels do.
I am a Stephen King fan to my bone marrow, of both the writer and the person. His books have gotten me through some desperate times of total need to escape (and LOADS of laundry, traffic, nail fills, dog walks, waiting in lines or for appointments, putting make-up on/hair done and gardening). Having his books playing are like spending time with a fascinating friend with more to offer my interest than any part of life itself!
Delores Claiborne, IT, 11-22-63, The Stand, Under the Dome, Carrie, Hearts in Atlantis (the first story), Bag of Bones, Dream Catcher, The Mr. Mercedes trilogy, The Outsider, The Mist, The Shining, Pet Cemetery all gave me more in value than what any book costs and much more. The first 4 on my list above having read 3 or more times and my fave titles ever! I adore Stephen King and it hurts to write anything but a stellar review. Duma Key merits reading, just don't expect an 11-22-63 or Delores Claiborne, but still worth the listen. The narrator was flawless BTW!! I love you SK!!

I AM a Realtor so I was looking forward to some juicy content within our industry because there's plenty! Nothing burger here in this book.
Some good parts to it, not an amazing book in the slightest. Kept me guessing a little bit, the twist was kind of a buzz kill. Don't want to give up too much. Kept wanting more here, less there. If you read it, good for you. If you miss this one, no biggie.
