You know, sometimes you just need to watch a couple of unsuspecting victims, get stranded in a dessert and end up in the hands of a death cult. It really helps to give you a sense of safety and comfort in knowing that you're not the one who has to go through that situation. Instead you get to live vicariously through whatever victims Janelle Schiecke decides to put through this novella that could easily be the plot of a good old fashioned 80's horror movie.

Not only did Janelle cook up both a spooky setting, as well as an neoteric rendition of a classic horror trope plot, but she also did an amazing job writing the characters. The most impressive thing for me was that she wrote some incredibly three-dimensional male characters. Jason and Eddie read as if they were characters written by a male author who has experienced a brotherly sibling relationship in their life, while still adhering to those 80's horror tropes. And just as Janell does an amazing job writing these characters, Edward Baker does a fantastic job bringing these characters to life with his narration. Each character is it's own performance and at no time did I feel like couldn't differentiate one from the other.

In conclusion, if you like watching 80's horror movies and want to read something similar, give this a go. I'm confident that it won't disappoint.

I went into this interested in seeing how a crime family's enforce deals with magical threats. I was left with Wolfe, a character whose decisions actually made me frustrated. The supposed amount of time this enforcer has worked in the crime family felt wrong, when you take into account the actions that this enforcer takes. This doesn't seem like a crime boss's right-hand man for over 15 years. Where's the experience in dealing with
betrayal? Where's the paranoia? There are few books where I've found myself questioning the author's decision when it comes to their characters. This just happened to be one of them. Wolfe just seems so OCC for the type of character that he's introduced as, that I was broken out the imagery this author was trying to convey several times in this book. I honestly don't like this MC.

Then there's the love interest, Shel. At times, I genuinely felt like this character was written with a base template, and then they added whatever was needed for any given situation. To me, there's nothing interesting about this girl.

Tha said, the premise is fun. The idea of the Gods playing a game by giving mortals cards and having different seasons every once in a while is genius. There's so much that one can do with this idea. Also, for the first deck-building LitRPG I've read, the mechanics were simple to understand. I'm looking forward to reading other stories with deck-building mechanics in them.

Overall, while the premise is interesting, and the action is well written, the character decisions felt so OCC for me that I can't give this book more than a 3. And I'll sadly not be continuing the series.

This is now in the running for my favorite book of the year. DJ Butler has crafted a world that's familiar yet so different that it is its own thing. I loved the characters, the magic and the pace. The pilot's been done before, yet it kept me engaged the whole time. Looking forward to continuing the series in the next installment.

What did I like? It's a fantasy farming story, with cool animal companions.

What did I find annoying? The MC is OP and knows it. I find this rather meh.

Wow! I couldn't put this down. Tim Waggoner created such a cool concept with this first entry into the Custodians of the Cosmos. From Chapter 1, he introduces you to a pretty bleak world that mirrors our own. he then goes to show you what you're going to get for the rest of the book. And it's a banger.

I liked the magic system he employed in this world he created. the idea of centering the magic around the concept of entropy is quite unique.

I think the only thing I found that needed more care was the characters. There are two MCs in this book, and I feel like this book only helped me understand one of them. Yes, he fleshed out Gina, but I still feel like Neal is a bit Generic. That said I hope to get more character development in the next book coming out this July. I'm looking forward to it.

Tyson Parks is a famous horror novelist has-been who is in desperate need of a new best-selling book. His girlfriend Sarah gifts him a very expensive, gothic-looking desk for him to write his next bestseller on. As soon as he starts writing on the desk, he's sent into a dangerous writing trance. On the other side of the world, a mysterious woman is desperately seeking this desk in order to destroy it and end the evil curse attached to it. From the moment this desk entered his life a gory, violent story begins and Tyson literally cannot type fast enough.

I really enjoyed this book. It's a good psychological episode and/or descent into madness story. There were many moments where I had to pause and come back to it later in order to recompose and separate myself from the events unfolding in the book. It's this type of reaction that makes this a true horror story for me. Masterfully done Mr. Fracassi.
