Historia
In this simple, beautifully written book, David Michie opens the door to the core teachings of Tibetan Buddhism. With wry, self-deprecating humour, he shows us how he began to incorporate Buddhist practices into his daily life. He explains how he came to understand the difference between the temporary pleasures of ordinary life, and the profound sense of well-being and heart-felt serenity that comes from connecting with our inner nature.

Mostly crap
Revisado: 09-02-23
Very disappointed in this. The first couple of chapters were promising. Then, he fell straight into the normal pattern of the Tony Robbins PD crap, where anything bad that happens to you (including breast cancer, apparently) is your fault (due to your karma), that there's no such thing as objective reality, and you can accomplish anything if you'd just change your lousy attitude and build good karma. He then has the nerve to point out that a large majority of the world lives in squalor compared with us. Which, according to his own philosophy, would lead to some rather unflattering conclusions about those societies and their culture if everything is due to individuals' karma. Skip this and find something more compassionate - since that's the actual Buddhist tradition, not this garbage.

In this enthralling narrative, professor and award-winning author Jeffrey Ostler recounts the Lakota Sioux’s loss of their spiritual homeland and their remarkable legal battle to regain it. Moving easily from battlefields to reservations to Supreme Court chambers, Ostler captures the strength that bore the Lakotas through the worst times and kept alive the dream of reclaiming their cherished lands.

Excellent. Exactly what I was looking for.
Revisado: 08-24-23
I wanted a complete, unbiased, easy-to-read overview of the issues surrounding the Lakota peoples and their fight for the Black Hills, as well as the overall history of the Lakota. This was exactly that. I can really find no fault at all with this book. If someone ever asked me for the "one book to read" on the Lakota and their history and struggles, this would be it.

Historia
From one of the most admired reporters covering China today comes a vital new account of the life and political vision of Xi Jinping, the authoritarian leader of the People’s Republic whose hard-edged tactics have set the rising superpower on a collision with Western liberal democracies. Party of One shatters the many myths that shroud one of the world’s most secretive political organizations and its leader. Many observers misread Xi during his early years in power, projecting their own hopes that he would steer China toward more political openness, rule of law, and pro-market economics.

Best single book to help understand modern China
Revisado: 07-13-23
I can't say enough good things about this book. It is written in an extremely accessible narrative style such that you feel like you're listening to a novel. It is sweeping in its coverage of key periods of modern Chinese history, hitting all the key events without any extraneous detail. It provides deep insights into Xi Jin Ping and how his regime works. I've read or listened to a couple of dozen books on China in the last 20 years or so, and this is easily in the top three. Excellent resource for understanding modern China.

Historia
Dunbar-Ortiz adroitly challenges the founding myth of the United States and shows how policy against the Indigenous peoples was colonialist and designed to seize the territories of the original inhabitants, displacing or eliminating them. And as Dunbar-Ortiz reveals, this policy was praised in popular culture, through writers like James Fenimore Cooper and Walt Whitman, and in the highest offices of government and the military.

Capitalism vs. Socialism: Comparing Economic Systems

Historia
Ever since we produced our course Thinking About Capitalism, customers have expressed interest in a follow-up course that could help them understand socialism in the same way. After much consideration, we determined that it actually would be more beneficial to create a course that compares and contrasts the two major global economic theories, examining them in ways that move past the polemics many of us are used to and looking at these systems as they relate to one another and the world at large.

Fantastic. Exactly what I hoped for.
Revisado: 06-30-23
This is my 7th or 8th of these Great Courses so far, and it's the best yet. The professor uses very plain, clear language to explain the concepts. There is no fluff. He clearly defines all jargon he uses and comes back to the concepts throughout the course. He gives an amazing tour of the various economies of N. Àmerican, Asian and European countries and compares and contrasts each. And he describes the benefits and drawbacks of each in an evenhanded way, backed by evidence. Absolutely terrific.

Very informative, worth a listen
Revisado: 01-15-23
This course was almost perfect in terms of what i was hoping to get out of it. He gives a sweeping overview of the history of the empire, yet in s concise manner, and he does a nice job of hitting only the salient points. My one gripe about the course is that he gives the East Asian countries (Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Burma...) extremely short shrift, and i was particularly interested in these since i lived in that region fruit a few years.

Historia
Israel is a tiny state, and yet it has captured the world's attention, aroused its imagination, and, lately, been the object of its opprobrium. Why does such a small country speak to so many global concerns? More pressingly: Why does Israel make the decisions it does? And what lies in its future? We cannot answer these questions until we understand Israel's people and the questions and conflicts, the hopes and desires, that have animated their conversations and actions.

Revisado: 11-28-22
The author has a very clear pro-Israel bias, and it shows in the way he frames all of the events throughout the book. So I see this as an excellent summary of the "Israeli side of the story," and therefore a worthwhile listen.
