It was supposed to be a peaceful exploration, Earth's first step in expanding to the stars. But, no plan survives first contact. Thrown into a battle for survival against the deadliest threats imaginable, the Marines must contend with ice and desert planets with mysterious creatures, along with a history of turmoil that threatens to spill over to Earth if not checked. Juvenile story of dragons vs vampires
Revisado: 02-09-24
I thought I’d enjoy this, but I’m done enduring such an annoying amalgamation of conflicts centered around the idea of ancient grudges and an inexplicable star gate looming in low earth orbit. I was told this would be a space opera. So far, it’s just a flop.

Historia
Centuries from now, the basic right to expand human intelligence beyond its natural limits has become a war-worthy cause for the Demarchists and Conjoiners. Only vast lighthugger starships bind these squabbling colonies together, manned by the panicky and paranoid Ultras. And the hyperpigs just try to keep their heads down. The rich get richer. And everyone tries not to think about the worrying number of extinct alien civilizations turning up on the outer reaches of settled space...because who's to say that humanity won't be next?

Glimpses into the future
Revisado: 07-23-23
This book succinctly captures well the type of story telling I fell in love with from Alastair Raynolds.
It also puts into context the branches of human evolutionary directions that are possible in a post human society or societies that the author had set out to describe.
I almost wish I had listened to this prior to Revelation Space. But then again, one of the great wonders of Science Fiction is the suspension of disbelief.

Historia
July 25, 2234: The crew of the Adamura discovers the Anomaly. On the seemingly uninhabited planet Talos VII:a circular pit, 50 kilometers wide. Its curve not of nature, but design. Now, a small team must land and journey on foot across the surface to learn who built the hole and why. But they all carry the burdens of lives carved out on disparate colonies in the cruel cold of space. For some the mission is the dream of the lifetime, for others a risk not worth taking, and for one it is a desperate attempt to find meaning in an uncaring universe.

Is this how it feels to be an intrepid explorer? A Space Opera of exploration rather than guns and cannons.

I was certainly not expecting the exposition of this book in the series if we were going by To Sleep Beneath the Stars. It was an interesting experience as I had with the latter.

Historia
Twenty years after the elemental conflict that nearly tore apart the cosmos in The Saga of Seven Suns, a new threat emerges from the darkness. The human race must set aside its own inner conflicts to rebuild their alliance with the Ildiran Empire for the survival of the galaxy. In Kevin J. Anderson's The Dark Between the Stars, galactic empires clash, elemental beings devastate whole planetary systems, and factions of humanity are pitted against one another.

Sufficiently Entertaining and Arguably Good SciFi
Revisado: 01-06-22
It reads as a book from multiple converging perspectives and situations. In doing so entire worlds are built and played out. The narrative converges towards the main conflict, but at every turn you're left with more questions than answers. To some this will annoy, but it has kept me more than wanting for the story to continue.
It doesn't follow more popularized Space Opera formats, but the writing style is refreshing without the pretentious and obnoxious dump of jargon. Some elements border into Fantasy but very little is handwaved as mere magical application of technology.
Overall, an enjoyable book to listen to.

Historia
As Earth's faster-than-light spaceship hung in the void between galaxies, Arcot, Wade, Morey and Fuller could see below them, like a vast shining horizon, the mass of stars that formed their own island universe. Morey worked a moment with his slide rule, then said, "We made good time." But suddenly, far off to their left and far to their right, they saw two shining ships paralleling their course....

Quaint and Entertaining Sci-Fi
Revisado: 11-09-21
This has been an interesting story of four boys taking to an adventure across the universe on a fantastic ship built from the discovery two super meta materials. However, it reads too much like a children’s book devoid of deeper world building and character development.
Certainly entertaining, it is a nice departure from the often heavy and emotionally charged reads of Space Opera books often featured in catalogs. I would recommend this for a lighthearted read or listen.

Historia
Jain was the lieutenant commander of an elite SEAL team. He was accustomed to order and discipline, which he used to give the men under his command that particular brand of killer instinct his unit was known for.But one day that semi-comfortable, ordered life ended when he opened his eyes to find his body replaced by a starship. His mind had become its AI core. He is somewhere in deep space. Most of his systems are badly damaged. He has no memory of how he got here, or what his mission is. Evidence points to an attack by an unknown entity.

Painfully stupid listen
Revisado: 10-24-21
Said said said commented replied said said said asked
Story: Completely idiotic world building and character development. It tries to take a page from the Bobiverse but fails at balancing accessible explanations and putting in actual personalities to the characters.
Writing: A lot of SciFi jargon does not make a story.
Performance: The voice acting and verbal cues need to be better planned. It is so badly executed I might as well have used text-to-speech on a real book.

Historia
Civil war looms in the Bobiverse in this brand-new, epic-length adventure by Audible number one best seller Dennis E. Taylor. More than a hundred years ago, Bender set out for the stars and was never heard from again. There has been no trace of him despite numerous searches by his clone-mates. Now Bob is determined to organize an expedition to learn Bender’s fate - whatever the cost. But nothing is ever simple in the Bobiverse. Bob’s descendants are out to the 24th generation now, and replicative drift has produced individuals who can barely be considered Bobs anymore.

Borrows some ideas from Ring World
Revisado: 11-02-20
This has been an absolute joy to listen to. Since it’s more popular culture science fiction much like the much referenced Skippy’s books, I’ll go ahead and compare the two: While both has been very entertaining, the wide gamut of experiences and possibilities presented in the Bobiverse has been a stark contrast to the narrow and repetitive monologues of Skippy in its series.
This book in particular takes on and borrows bits here and there from Ringworld but makes the concepts it’s own. I’ve had a blast listening to the mix of Space Opera and classic Adventure and Suspense scenarios all while endearing you to the characters and the stories they weave. Pile the top notch voice acting and this is a no-brainer keeper.
