Historia

How Sad
Revisado: 11-30-24
A story with no “happy ending”. A story of the collective sorrow of a community destroyed by its own machinations. I became lost in some parts of the story. But I believe it’s worth listening to again.

Wow!!!
Revisado: 11-29-24
I have heard of the name J. Edgar Hoover, in fact on a visit to DC I saw the FBI building in the distance and saw that it bore his name. I had never given much thought to who he was and what he was about. I just assumed that every building in DC was named after some obscure individual who at some point in history had been a part of the government. I still don’t know how I feel about him. Was he an outstanding public servant or villainous government operator? I don’t know. What I do know is that this book is fascinating, intriguing, and meticulously researched. I really felt that I had lived though every stage of Hoover’s life and in some cases caught myself rooting for that complex government man. It’s worth reading or listening to. Fascinating!

Historia
As Adolf Hitler and the Nazis seduced a nation, bullied a continent, and attempted to exterminate the Jews of Europe, a small number of dissidents and saboteurs worked to dismantle the Third Reich from the inside. One of these was Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a pastor and author. In this New York Times bestselling biography, Eric Metaxas takes both strands of Bonhoeffer's life—the theologian and the spy—and draws them together to tell a searing story of incredible moral courage in the face of monstrous evil.

Historia
Who was Kim Philby? Those closest to him—like his fellow MI6 officer and best friend since childhood, Nicholas Elliot, and the CIA’s head of counterintelligence, James Jesus Angleton—knew him as a loyal confidant and an unshakeable patriot. Philby was a brilliant and charming man who rose to head Britain’s counterintelligence against the Soviet Union. Together with Elliott and Angleton he stood on the front lines of the Cold War, holding Communism at bay. But he was secretly betraying them both: He was working for the Russians the entire time.

Wow. HARD TO BELIEVE
Revisado: 11-26-23
It seems to me, that they always knew yet they didn’t know a thing. Great book, great read. Second book by Ben Macintyre that I listen to. Both equally grasping. Some parts of this book seem right out of a James Bond Movie, or maybe James Bond was inspired by this story.

Upon My Word
Revisado: 11-01-23
Wow… I have seen the movie about 10 times, and it has been one of my absolute favorite movies for a long time, but this book has taken me to the heights of excitements and lows of despair and every emotion in between. It has been one of my most enjoyable fiction reads in a long time. I will probably listen to it again. I have never been so invested in a story. The narrator does an amazing job, probably could not have made it through the end without such superb narration. The characters have all been richly written.

Historia
The Karangalan family and their neighbors huddle for survival in the cellar of a house a few miles from Manila. Outside the safety of their little refuge the war rages on—fiery bombs torch the beautiful Filipino countryside, Japanese soldiers round up and interrogate innocent people, and from the hills guerillas wage a desperate campaign against the enemy. Inside the cellar, these men, women, and children put their hopes and dreams on hold as they wait out the war, only emerging to look for food, water, and medicine.

It’s a great book.
Revisado: 05-26-23
I read this book in 10th grade and I have re-engaged with it now. It’s a great and fascinating story that centers on a family, and their neighbors. I love this book a lot. It makes me want to visit the Philippines and connect with her People. The audio unfortunately skips a little and you miss out on some great part of this story, other than that this is a great story I want everyone to read. I would probably read it my future children…

Widely heralded on publication as a “must-read” (Military Review) and “important window on America’s battle with al-Qaeda” (Washington Post), Ali Soufan’s revelatory account of the war on terror as seen from its front lines changed the way we understand al-Qaeda and how the United States prosecuted the war — and led to hard questions being asked of our leaders.

An epic and suspenseful thriller
Revisado: 08-11-22
I really enjoyed the narrator.
Had this not been a book based on world changing events I would’ve said the author had an imaginative and creative writing style; and that the main character had a life filled with adventure encountering the good the bad and the ugly. Unfortunately these things did happen, and while I listened I could vividly see myself in those interrogation rooms. For a couple of days I felt as though I was part of these events, and I cheered for the good guys.

Historia
A powerful, moving memoir - and a practical guide to healing - written by Dr. Edith Eva Eger, an eminent psychologist whose own experiences as a Holocaust survivor help her treat patients and allow them to escape the prisons of their own minds. The Choice weaves Eger's personal story with case studies from her work as a psychologist. Her patients and their stories illustrate different phases of healing and show how people can choose to escape the prisons they construct in their minds and find freedom, regardless of circumstance.

Revisado: 02-02-22
After reading this book I have a more profound understanding of the Holocaust, of an immigrant’s new beginning in America, of the variety of human suffering and of the choices that are available to us each and every single day about how we move forward. I feel as though I personally know Dr. Eger, yet I don’t. I will think about this book for a long time.

I will never forget Night!
Revisado: 01-26-22
A slim volume of inexplicable horror and human darkness that depicts the resilience of a people, of a boy. I have never read such a small book with such enormous impact! Everyone must read this book, every person should have their children and grandchildren read this book. In the world in which we live, we must never allow ourselves to collectively forget the past.
