Historia
Meet Threadbare. He is 12 inches tall, full of fluff, and really, really bad at being a hero. Magically animated and discarded by his maker as a failed experiment, he is saved by a little girl. But she's got problems of her own, and he might not be able to help her. Fortunately for the little golem, he's quick to find allies, learn skills, gain levels, and survive horrible predicaments. Which is good, because his creator has a whole lot of enemies …

This book is obnoxious
Revisado: 09-06-24
This book really doesn't translate well to audiobook despite Tim Gerard Reynolds's best efforts. The long lists of stars are just tedious. Every single interaction is interrupted by a slew of experience narrative. Exposition is clumsy - the main character is dumb as a plot device for the exposition not relegated to literally just being listed as tooltips. Prepare to be enveloped in second-hand cringe at references to decades old meme references and lazy fight scenes with no real danger or point (other than even more opportunities for lists).
I'm not sure what agee group this book is for. The plot is childish and the writing feels crass for the sake of being crass in several places. It feels like it was written in the voice of the "how do you do, fellow kids" meme. I think it's actually for the lolcatz crowd though, truthfully. If you're that, you will probably love it.

The Afterword explains a lot
Revisado: 08-15-24
I fell in love really hard with the original Cycle books. The last 4 books in this series completely soured me on the whole saga. These books have been meandering loops of arriving at a place, learn there's forbidden kind of magic, learn forbidden kind of magic, and then somehow anime style be a savant at new kind of magic. The fighting is tedious. The villain is comically one dimensional. All the goodwill earned by the first few books evaporates every time the same story is repeated in the last 4-6 books. I finished this book out of spite. Plot hole ridden, repetitive, predictable waste of time.

Historia
Cassie McDowell’s life in 1980s Minnesota seems perfectly wholesome. She lives on a farm, loves school, and has a crush on the nicest boy in class. Yes, there are her parents’ strange parties and their parade of deviant guests, but she’s grown accustomed to them. All that changes when someone comes hunting in Lilydale. One by one, local boys go missing. One by one, they return changed - violent, moody, and withdrawn. What happened to them becomes the stuff of shocking rumors. The accusations of who’s responsible grow just as wild, and dangerous town secrets start to surface.

I'm not sure who this book is for
Revisado: 05-22-24
The tone is dark but lacks depth/complexity. The themes are late YA maybe but the writing is very YA. The characters are cliche exhaggerations. I just kind of was bored and not terribly engaged or surprised.

Forced Romance got in the way
Revisado: 07-10-23
I thought it was going to be a fairly intriguing murder mystery/thriller, but the obvious forced relationship was just painful. The female protagonist is angry and short-sighted to the point of being boring and the male protagonist is so mind numbingly clueless and malleable that you just don't care about the things they care about. it's difficult to relate to them because they're caricatures not characters.
and the big mystery reveal is simply that. There's never any clever detective work. Just endless bickering punctuated by bland physical pining until the bad guy does a full Scooby-Doo plot reveal. No work was required by either protagonist to catch the bad guy at all. So if they're not relatable and they don't solve anything, why do they even exist??

Nesta Archeron has always been prickly-proud, swift to anger, and slow to forgive. And ever since being forced into the Cauldron and becoming High Fae against her will, she's struggled to find a place for herself within the strange, deadly world she inhabits. Against the sweeping backdrop of a world seared by war and plagued with uncertainty, Nesta and Cassian battle monsters from within and without as they search for acceptance - and healing - in each other's arms.

"Have you tried just not being sad?" as a book
Revisado: 04-11-23
The whole setup of this book is that Nesta is dealing with her trauma in an unhealthy way, but she NEVER seems to actually take the steps to deal with it healthily, she's just forced into revelations all but about one time. The smut is unbearably bad. The whole plot of the series is "yada yada yada'd" for the sake of repetitive filler. This book managed to suck any remaining life or vibrancy out of the characters of the series.
awful. I finished this out of spite.
as for performance, it's largely fine, not great. but what the crap with whatever Az's voice was.
