TO SHORT just finished & the wait is already to much...
Revisado: 12-19-24
Obviously from my title I liked the book & love the series. The slight issues that annoy me are negligible and I only write this as review for others not invested in the material. The writing is always good even when certain characters get to whiney ie; thrisha, it does serve a purpose and thankfully doesn't persist unlike malceas who usually is just as irritating, but Intentionally so, at least imho. The reviews that complain about this turning into a romance novel are a bit much considering the main characters utter lack of emotion from the start I wouldn't call his maturity in all things just romance novel fodder. Other than the feeling that this book was a bit light on the usual convoluted rezkin mayhem and a few hours to short, I thoroughly enjoyed the early xmas gift and hope for the next in 2025.

Light and fun
Revisado: 12-17-24
The story is getting a bit formularic but by no means does that take away from enjoyment. Yes the stats get a bit redundant but that goes with the territory, my only issue is trying to calculate how long the story actually is without all the stat time. lol

Consistantly great work
Revisado: 11-30-24
I have not listened to all of his work just yet, but it seems inevitable because every book I have listened to have been has been excellent. I am still holding out hope for more in the super powered world. That being said, I always get a kick out of Fred. I have even tried the GA versions and while I prefer Kirby's narrations, if for no other reason than the intro, Drew's writing is just that good and having to good options is almost enough for me to try and manually read one...

Before he became Shadow, he was just Sean. Though to the media, the FBI, and a hundred police agencies he was The New Jersey Devil, The Steel Samurai, The Saint Louis Slaughter, and dozens more. These stories are the tales of how Sean learned discipline and the martial arts skills that have served him so well: from his time in college, where a series of accidents leads to him finding his sensei, to his life at Boston Implantables as one of their most gifted and inspired engineers, to becoming one of the more successful serial killers of the superhero era.

Shadow is just The character that can do no wrong
Revisado: 04-03-23
Shadow book gets released, I buy audiobook, I stay up to listen to it twice, I listen to the original again. That will happen anytime more shadow stories arrive. Shadow is just fun, in the strangest ways in my case and has become literary comfort food.
That being said, I want a full Johnny 2fer story, you can't drop a few lines & move on with the nye invulnerable maniac who likes cats... That is whining not complaining just an fyi.
Yes I enjoyed this book, yes I recommend constantly & I paused Sanderson when I saw this!

Historia
Several years have passed since the war with the djevels ended, the reality they'd infested was destroyed, and their king killed. But that left Sean and the lions faced with another problem: the million or so djevels currently in the world that needed to be hunted down and killed. Part of the solution was to fence in the biggest area that was infested to stop them from spreading any further, while teams began hunting down the ones that had escaped. It's not an easy job, but it's a lot easier than the previous one by far.

Bitter sweet
Revisado: 05-15-22
This book was definitely written for the fans of this series! The author may be moving on to a new direction with this series and its characters, so if this is the last of the line, I appreciate the way he came back to give the fans a bit of closure that was lacking when we thought the series wrapped. The story can go either way now without complaints. His writing is always purposeful especially in this genre and I appreciate the quality even when I would prefer quantity in this case.
There is no question that I will buy the new series that was previewed. Frankly I want more of every series or novel I have listened to from this author.

If I'm to save the Universal Magic, I need to find them. What I need to do with them isn't exactly fit for public consumption, but it's fundamental to who I am as a Creation Mage. I just have to slip into the castle, disguised as a noble, and snatch four other Creation Mages. All while avoiding the eyes of the Queen and the Arcane Council.

Revisado: 05-15-22
You know what you are getting with books like this, so the sex scenes are always going to go overboard. I am just impressed that it was worked in to the story & has a purpose. This author like most in this genre has several series going simultaneously because they have to as indie authors. I don't mind juvenile humor & op or os(over sexed) mcs, but I am not fond of a lack of progression, fortunately the production rate & target audience has not been as much of a distraction from telling a fun story. No massive cliffs is a nice touch as well. I will stick with this series unless given a good reason not to. The 5* is not entirely accurate but more of a bribe for the steady growth I am hoping for...

Hearne is consistent, ebook would be torture
Revisado: 08-12-21
This was a safe follow up very good but tying in the druid is when you swing for the fences. I may be a bit overcritcal the blend was well done, just passed on going all in, imho. The word play IMHO was not a great way to kick it off. If I was reading paper or screen I would have probably stopped. The word play isn't much fun solo & a distraction for those who don't play the game & pedestrian to practical polyglots. Fortunately Luke has salvaged much worse than a tiny glossary and it truly had very little impact to the story. When I write these I don't know the audience & anonymity is not a factor, so while I have been hypercritical on something I stated had little overall impact to the story and less the performance, I was not nit picking or simply being petty, it has a purpose. When I spend the bulk of my feedback as an editor and that intro was the only negative reaction that I had all the way to the end. I have to go to those lengths just to say it was a good audiobook!

Never bet your word when genre bias is in play.
Revisado: 05-19-21
I openly admit that this book was fun, not to sugary and not overly explicit. I am not a big fan of paranormal romance it's been as bad as the inane harem novels. So I gave my word to write a review if I finished the book. I don't write anything lightly because I keep them honest for other listeners & feedback for authors, so I usually sound extremely condescending and insulting. That being said the author kept things simple, the story was an excuse to play with some great characters which I truly appreciated when I learned this was not a new series but the 5th novel. I still argue that I won the bet because I benefit from either outcome, but I have paid part of the price & I can take the teasing.
The area's I would like to see improvement are few & may be a bit biased. The lightning bolt instant attraction is a bit premature (pun/innuendo intended) in the story I would like the new character to run the character gauntlet for a while before the sword of damocles appears. Since I am listening to the 1st book while writing this, the pace allowed more of the story(I am around the halfway point) explained and the goofball characters to shine, which made the contrast to the mc an asset as opposed to being overshadowed. I would like more paranormals and more etiquette, since everyone is so nauseating when taking offense annonomysly hiding behind a supercomputer used to take pictures, I get a kick out of the common sense rules of monster etiquette. Last, I want longer novels but I usually say that when I have fun with a new novel.
So ends the review and I hope At least some of it was coherent. As to continuing this series I will keep an eye for it. As with everything I write all views are simply my own opinions and should be treated as such.

Enjoyed but getting a bit ambitious & codependent
Revisado: 03-20-21
First let me say I love this series and have a great deal of respect for Shayne. He is a talented author with an incredible work ethic and an imagination capable of incredible art and the talent needed. That being said, this one was very bipolar, if not full blown multiple personality disorder and that is already part of Nate. I am not saying that is necessarily a bad thing, but in this novel the crossover series and vague overall story arc that has given shayne the freedom to leap from fairy tales to mythology is becoming erratic if not restrictive. This may be the first of his books where an editor should have stepped in, but it's difficult to argue with the success and loyal fan base. Regardless of my opinion of how this could have been improved, I know damn well I am not capable of doing so, my hypocrisy only goes so far.
So I will leave this, not my favorite in this series but not enough to stop me from buying the next audiobook as soon as I can.

Keeps improving and frustrating
Revisado: 02-09-21
The story and overall writing improve over the course of the book and series overall. The maturity level is less erratic but the jump from whining to will of steel, is much better and even justified in the story, which is a novel way around the YA with sex vs trying to fake one or the other, so I hope the series continues in that direction. Frankly I just hope the series continues in general, this story arc is not finished regardless of the ending (imho) and while I have come to expect the way the author chooses the ending and the necessity for an indie author to do so, I would make 1 suggestion Epilogue!
Yes I will buy the next book in this series
