Historia
Traveling across millennia, weaving the experiences and world views of cultures both extinct and extant, The Invention of Yesterday shows that the engine of history is not so much heroic (battles won), geographic (farmers thrive), or anthropogenic (humans change the planet) as it is narrative. Many thousands of years ago, when we existed only as countless small autonomous bands of hunter-gatherers widely distributed through the wilderness, we began inventing stories - to organize for survival, to find purpose and meaning, to explain the unfathomable.

Great Broad View of History
Revisado: 03-25-23
Loved the detail and the elucidation of the connectedness yet uniqueness we all share. The only issue I had was some of the author's side comments seeming old uncle like.

Part history, part true-crime, and entirely entertaining, listen to the story of how the behemoth Oxford English Dictionary was made. You'll hang on every word as you discover that the dictionary's greatest contributor was also an insane murderer working from the confines of an asylum.

Fascinating story about the O.E.D.
Revisado: 02-22-17
The details about how the Oxford English Dictionary was compiled is a great read in and of itself. The background of C.W.Miner, locked up in a Victorian era insane asylum, and his contributions to the OED adds wonderful color to it.

Historia
New York, 1888. Gas lamps still flicker in the city streets, but the miracle of electric light is in its infancy. The person who controls the means to turn night into day will make history - and a vast fortune. A young untested lawyer named Paul Cravath, fresh out of Columbia Law School, takes a case that seems impossible to win. Paul's client, George Westinghouse, has been sued by Thomas Edison over a billion-dollar question: Who invented the lightbulb and holds the right to power the country?

Historia
This is the remarkable story of the English language; from its beginnings as a minor guttural Germanic dialect to its position today as a truly established global language. The Adventure of English is not only an enthralling story of power, religion, and trade, but also the story of people, and how their lives continue to change the extraordinary language that is English.

Historia
An astonishing retelling of 20th-century history from the Ottoman perspective, delivering profound new insights into World War I and the contemporary Middle East. Between 1911 and 1922, a series of wars would engulf the Ottoman Empire and its successor states, in which the central conflict, of course, was World War I - a story we think we know well. As Sean McMeekin shows us in this revelatory new history of what he calls the "wars of the Ottoman succession", we know far less than we think.

Good Primer for Role of History in Current Issues
Revisado: 12-16-15
Very informative book. It sometimes feels too detailed regarding actual battles such that it slows things down. That is the main reason to knock off a star. Otherwise I felt that I learnt a great deal about imperial politics of the late 19th century and early 20th century. Those events which led to the end of the Ottoman empire and the current political map have affected our lives today. The book gives a pretty balanced look at all sides I felt. I think it is important reading.

Historia
Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does, even down to how he butters his toast. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning the mail arrives, and within the stack of quotidian minutiae is a letter addressed to Harold in a shaky scrawl from a woman he hasn’t seen or heard from in twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye.

A Beautiful Journey
Revisado: 03-15-13
What made the experience of listening to The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry the most enjoyable?
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I could empathize with Harold Fry very much, although I am about 30 years behind where he is in his life. .You don't have to be at the tail end life to identify mistakes made in life and the contemplation of them. The lessons he learns are applicable to just about all of us. At times I found his story to be funny, sad, helpless, and then empowering, tragic yet ultimately hopeful. At all times, I found Harold to be immensely sweet and likable. Even his wife, Maureen, who initially seemed to be a wenchy antagonist, you learn is a true human being with flaws, yet strength and love. This book felt good to my soul,
