Historia
Piña coladas. Mojitos. Hurricanes. Daiquiris. Mai tais. Nothing makes a vacation like one of these delightful rum drinks, right? But whether blended with ice and fruit or sipped neatly from a glass tumbler, this sweet and fiery spirit brings with it a fascinating, complicated history that stretches back to colonial times of the 17th century in the Caribbean.

A history to appreciate
Revisado: 02-22-23
Introduced to the caramel notes in a rum a few weeks ago and having had so many cocktails that had rum as an ingredient, I was pleasantly surprised that this book was a suggestion. As someone who did not grow up in the Americas, the narration along with an open Google Earth app, made for such a lovely time. It's easy to appreciate now the rich history, that led thousands to move massive amounts of the spirit across the vast oceans at the time, when much of modern technology hadn't been invented yet 🍹 The history is jarring but, hard not to see, mostly true. Googling some of the facts made it clear that the negative comments in some other reviews might not have been the most honest. Here's to a world where we continue learning from our mistakes.

Historia
As a gay person, Joanne dreamed of falling in love and having a child. This seemed impossible - until she swiped right on Lara. From their first date on, Joanne knew Lara was the one - kind, caring, and wanting to have a child together someday. Two years later, Lara, a transgender woman, told Joanne, a cisgender woman, that if they wanted to try having a biological child, it was now or never. Despite the physical and mental obstacles, the couple embarked on a conception journey that would take their bond to the brink.

Historia
Imagine losing your grip on reality and plunging into a nightmarish yet fantastical realm of schizophrenia. This memoir is one Harvard grad's account of several psychotic episodes he's endured over the years. A constant pause-resister, the adrenaline doses keep coming from start to finish. These vivid accounts of psychoses put the listeners in a front-row seat of some of the spectacular recesses of human imagination - only the listener has the option to check out at any time.

Absolutely beautiful
Revisado: 10-21-21
Someone close to me might be affected by the experiences described by the author and while we've been slowly working on our path to understanding, this book has been extremely revealing. I wanna thank the author for all the work they did for this book and I'm sorry to anyone for the way the world can be unkind. Hope this book helps you as I'm sure it will us.

Historia
Sleep is the subject of intense scientific debate among biologists and neuroscientists. Why must we spend about one-third of our lives asleep? What exactly is sleep? Why does a lack of sleep impair our cognitive abilities and leave us vulnerable to a host of medical issues ranging from obesity to reduced resistance to infectious disease?

This is what to listen to BEFORE you see a doctor!

Absolutely brilliant - extremely insightful
Revisado: 08-11-21
I am going to sound extremely biased. The book did an amazing job drawing parallels from studies in animals and humans to arrive at conclusions that very closely match my experience with poor sleep and with the treatment I've received. I now understand better why my doctor put me on sleeping aids. How I might have been doing things that could have made them less effective. Why even when I was on them and sleeping the number of hours recommended, my performance at work was suffering(which showed in my conversations with my bosses), and also why it was thoughtful but not in my best interest to have been on aids for an extended duration!
Back story, I sought treatment about 6 years ago because I was waking up every 5-15 mins(often with nightmares). I could force myself to work enough to not lose my job but I wasn't thriving and my health overall was suffering. I was extremely active physically(60-90 minutes of cardio/strength work as high as 4-5 times per week during intense periods), and challenged at work, but I couldn't force myself to feel sleepy. I could spend as much as two hours in bed hoping I would fall asleep easier. But!!! As the treatment progressed, I could see definite improvements. Sleep interruptions became less frequent and about two years ago I stopped the last of my sleep aids, only using for emergencies - ie, regular sleep time is 11 but I have a workout commitment at 6 so to induce sleep earlier without anxiety around missing/performing poorly/under duress. It worked and I took my last emergency dose about 18 months ago. I've been sleeping really well. I still have a bit of daytime drowsiness because I seem to not be getting the best rem sleep(I think) but I feel far more confident bringing my thoughts to my doctor after having gone through this book! I hope this book helps you or someone you know in the way that it helped me.
