Short, simple, and predictable
Revisado: 03-06-25
The story seems rushed and very predictable. No sub plots and plot characters are well developed. It's a lot like a TV series.

Very interesting story
Revisado: 01-27-23
The story is very interesting and seems to be realistic. I'm not going to continue reading the series for the following reasons:
1. The author doesn't develop a lot of subplots.
2. The character development isn't very deep.
3. There is a heavy religious overtone that isn't anchored to a motive within the story. Feels like lecturing.
4. Sometimes the characters don't react appropriately given their age, experiences, capabilities, etc.
However, the story is good and the narration is great. For these stories that are representing a real-world techno thriller like this one I always compare it to the book "One Second After" which is extremely well written. This box set isn't nearly as good as that series. Its not bad though.

Historia
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

This is sci fi done perfectly. The story is believable and strikes a really good balance between real science and fiction.

Historia
What if it were possible to upload years of knowledge into your mind in hours? To become an expert in multiple scientific fields, become an MD, or learn several languages - in a single day? The benefit to humanity would be immense. But so would the danger.... Rachel Howard is a brilliant neuroscientist trying to make this capability a reality. But when she crosses paths with Kevin Quinn, a Secret Service agent desperately trying to kill the president, she finds herself at the epicenter of an insidious plot.

I couldn't make it to the end...!
Revisado: 07-30-18
The narrator is great. This book has a very interesting main plot but its not put together well. The extremely smart characters don't behave that way, most are underdeveloped, and there are many (many-many) parts of the story that are very thin. Often times the story is held together with magic. I have to believe this book wasn't a NY Times best seller, but rather the author has written another book that is a NY Times best seller.

Historia
NYPD Detective Jeremy Fisk hunts an assassin working for a shadowy cartel in this action-charged second installment of Dick Wolf's New York Times best-selling series, a masterful thriller that blends politics, intrigue, and twisting suspense. A number of bodies are discovered on the United States' border with Mexico, each carved with a bizarre symbol: a hummingbird. Detective Cecilia Garza, dubbed the Ice Queen among her colleagues at the Mexican intelligence agency because she's famous for never showing an ounce of weakness, arrives at the scene and recognizes the image immediately; it is the calling card of a killer called Chuparosa.

Great story and writing style - perfect narration
Revisado: 04-18-18
This author is really good. Characters are well developed and believable. The plot is realistic and all the sub plots have just the right amount of detail to pull everything back together. The narrator is perfect for this story. I thought the end of the story missed more than one opportunity for plot thickening but it was still great.

Court Gentry is known as The Gray Man—a legend in the covert realm, moving silently from job to job, accomplishing the impossible, and then fading away. And he always hits his target. But there are forces more lethal than Gentry in the world. And in their eyes, Gentry has just outlived his usefulness. Now, he is going to prove that for him, there's no gray area between killing for a living-and killing to stay alive.

Story telling was really thin
Revisado: 04-11-18
Plot was okay, theme was okay, but story telling was too thin for me. Much like the moniker "The Gray Man" the author labels many other aspects of the story and after a few times the practice becomes really cheesy. Many characters and subplots of the story are cliche. I think the narrator did a pretty good job.

Historia
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

After 9/11, the United States made one of the most secretive and dangerous deals in its history. The evidence against the powerful Saudis who coordinated the attack would be buried. In return, King Faisal would promise to keep the oil flowing and deal with the conspirators in his midst. When the king's own nephew is discovered funding ISIS, the president suspects that the Saudis never intended to live up to their agreement.

This one was incomplete..
Revisado: 09-28-17
Big fan of the series but this one was incomplete, rushed, not what I'm used to out of the series or the characters. New characters not developed well enough. Old characters not acting like themselves. Mitch acting like a dummy. It was too short and shallow.
Why is Marcus running comms on an op? Its silly. Why would every single body guard run headlong in to withering machine gun fire in a public parking lot? Stupid. Why would the worlds best secret agent, key word being secret, suddenly do a 100 things he would never have done before, all of which blow his cover? argh.....

Historia
The year is 2380. The Intersolar Commonwealth, a sphere of stars some 400 light-years in diameter, contains more than 600 worlds, interconnected by a web of transport "tunnels" known as wormholes. At the farthest edge of the Commonwealth, astronomer Dudley Bose observes the impossible: Over 1,000 light-years away, a star...vanishes. It does not go supernova. It does not collapse into a black hole. It simply disappears.

REALLY, really, good Scifi
Revisado: 07-18-17
Would you consider the audio edition of Pandora's Star to be better than the print version?
Haven't read the print version
Who was your favorite character and why?
Paula Mio, I can't remember another author creating a character like Mio. Unique, interesting, and key to the story.
Which scene was your favorite?
Not sure
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
No
Any additional comments?
I'm not really a huge Sci Fi fan. I get sick of trying to keep track of the weird made up names for everything and sometimes the stories aren't anchored in something resembling reality. I get bored. This book starts out really slow as the author develops the story and dozens of important characters but didn't drowned me in babble or nonsense. The story is really unique and written really well. Great characters, multiple parallel plot lines, subplots, conflict, and its all very realistic. Its a lot of fun to read-listen to. The narrator is good.
