Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.... The novel begins in Monte Carlo, where our heroine is swept off her feet by the dashing widower Maxim de Winter and his sudden proposal of marriage. Orphaned and working as a lady's maid, she can barely believe her luck. This is such a beautifully written book. It just gets better and better. It is also perfectly read. It seems everywhere the narrator turns she can’t seem to escape…Rebecca.

Historia
This Pulitzer Prize-winning classic tells the poignant tale of a Chinese farmer and his family in old agrarian China. The humble Wang Lung glories in the soil he works, nurturing the land as it nurtures him and his family. Nearby, the nobles of the House of Hwang consider themselves above the land and its workers; but they will soon meet their own downfall. The working people riot, breaking into the homes of the rich and forcing them to flee. When Wang Lung shows mercy to one noble and is rewarded, he begins to rise in the world, even as the House of Hwang falls.

A Classic
Revisado: 12-14-22
I have read and/or listened to this wonderful book more times than I can count. I love Pearl S. Buck’s stories of China so much. The narrator is perfect and one of my favorites. I wish he also narrated the remaining two books in the trilogy. Wang Lung is a fascinating main character to follow through his life and its many tribulations. The character of O-Lan is, in many ways, a sad one, yet she is one of the more interesting in the book. Highly recommend.

Not her best but not bad either
Revisado: 01-11-22
I love Rebecca and My Cousin Rachel SO MUCH and was excited to get this one. It does not live up to the other two. The narrator is good and does a fine job. The story itself is meh. The ending is terrible but I’m not surprised bc she always seems to leave you hanging in some way at the end. Debating returning it for another. 🤔

The provincial Bennet family, home to five unmarried daughters, is turned upside down when a wealthy bachelor takes up a house nearby. Mr. Bingley enhances his instant popularity by hosting a ball and taking an interest in the eldest Bennet daughter, Jane. Meanwhile, Mr. Darcy, Bingley’s even wealthier friend, makes himself equally unpopular by his aloof disdain of country manners.

Classic for a reason
Revisado: 10-14-21
Title says it all. This book has been a favorite of mine for years. This audiobook version is my absolute favorite. The narrator is superb in every way. It is a delight listening to her each and every single time. Jane Austen was a genius and I think people don’t realize just how good and just how funny she was. I never fail to laugh throughout. The way her words flow are almost lyrical. The language is gorgeous. The wit and sheer level of pettiness that is conveyed in such clever and “acceptable” ways is a joy to behold. I aspire to such skill in the Petty Arts. Her humor is at its best when applied to a quip from Mr. Bennett, the obliviously foolish Mr. Collins or the witty and often funny banter of Elizabeth. I couldn’t recommend this version more or the book itself (however you choose to consume it) enough. Classic for a reason!

Historia
Love, Lucy is the valentine Lucille Ball left for her fans—a warm, wise, and witty memoir written by Lucy herself. The legendary star of the classic sitcom I Love Lucy was at the pinnacle of her success when she sat down to record the story of her life. No comedienne had made America laugh so hard, no television actress had made the leap from radio and B movies to become one of the world’s best-loved performers. This is her story—in her own words.

Just Listen!
Revisado: 09-05-21
This is a treasure. How wonderful to have this record of her life from her own words. I would love to hear the tapes! You can just HEAR Lucille Ball saying these things as the narrator goes along. This may be helped by the fact that her daughter, Lucie, narrates. ;-) The book goes up to the early 60s and that’s my only complaint. I wish there were more. You won’t regret this one!

No secrets revealed but a wonderful listen
Revisado: 07-12-20
Don’t expect to find anything out you probably don’t already know. This isn’t a book about spilling the tea. It is a wonderful memoir by a lady who has worked with Her Majesty The Queen for many years, and because of this she has many lovely stories to tell. I’ve listened a few times and will definitely listen more. Her work on Her Majesty’s wardrobe is fabulous and so is this little book. Fans of the Queen (like me) will love this.

Historia
Leland Gaunt opens a new shop in Castle Rock called Needful Things. Anyone who enters his store finds the object of his or her lifelong dreams and desires: a prized baseball card, a healing amulet. In addition to a token payment, Gaunt requests that each person perform a little "deed", usually a seemingly innocent prank played on someone else from town. These practical jokes cascade out of control, and soon the entire town is doing battle with itself. Only Sheriff Alan Pangborn suspects that Gaunt is behind the population's increasingly violent behavior.

My favorite Stephen King
Revisado: 12-27-19
King is at his best when he is wearing boots and knee deep in small town New England. The characters, the setting, the narration and even the music all come together to make this my absolute favorite of his to listen to. I usually don’t care for music in audiobooks but, to me, here it just works. Absolutely recommend.

Why we think it’s a great listen: An all-time Audible favorite that mixes historic fiction, adventure, and romance with one of the most fascinating literary devices: time travel. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love. In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. But their blissful reunion is shattered....

Absolutely Loved It!
Revisado: 11-12-16
I was a bit skeptical after reading the reviews. I didn't want something that was too romancey. This was just the right mix. The story was engaging, the characters were likable and not so likable (as they were meant to be), and the narrator was perfect. I definitely recommend it. Now...on to book two!

What a ride!
Revisado: 10-15-15
I absolutely loved everything about this book. It was so fun learning about Henry's life prior to the events in AL:VH. The way the author weaves really history throughout the centuries with the story and makes it his own is enthralling. In fact, I'm not sure all of that really didn't happen that way. LOL! The narrator was amazing and made this even more of a joy to listen to. I really hope their is another book and that this narrator returns. The ending sure leaves the possibility open.

Historia
When novelist Owen Quine goes missing, his wife calls in private detective Cormoran Strike. At first, Mrs. Quine just thinks her husband has gone off by himself for a few days - as he has done before - and she wants Strike to find him and bring him home. But as Strike investigates, he discovers that Quine's disappearance is no coincidence. The novelist has just completed a manuscript featuring poisonous pen-portraits of almost everyone he knows. If the novel were published, it would ruin lives - meaning that almost everyone in his life would have motives to silence him.

Amazing book from an amazing author!
Revisado: 07-30-15
I absolutely loved this book. The plot line and characters were all interesting and I loved the ending. I can't wait for book number three in October! Definitely give this one a listen. The narrator is fabulous and nails every character. I don't think, like other reviewers, that it was too gruesome at all. Great stuff! Now I have to find something else to listen to that is as good as this!
