Historia
Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. They can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere. Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something.

Nice way to hear the truth, like or not
Revisado: 09-27-24
Listening to truth none of us ever manage to avoid, however hard we might try. Love is the water of life says Rumi. Only to love one must step in the water and know that however deep we venture it doesn’t take much to drown us. This said, why not hear this by the best? Worth every penny and minute. Recommended.

Historia
Set in Tunisia in the mid-1960s, this is the story of Howard Ingham, an American writer who has gone abroad to gather material for a movie too sordid to be set in America. Ingham is cool toward the girlfriend he left behind in New York - but his feelings start to change when she doesn't answer his increasingly aggravated letters and the filmmaker who hired Ingham fails to show in Tunisia.

Unforgettable
Revisado: 03-11-24
I miss the end of the story and will be miserable for a long spell as if losing something of myself feeling much as she did for ending the story as explained within. Her riveting exploration of the human psyche delivered within conversations involving many characters are uniquely humane and frighteningly spot on. Worth a relisten for certain. Must say I’m surprised and somewhat shocked that more of her stories aren’t scanned for Kindle or synched with Audible. Someone up the ladder should consider doing this.

Like listening to the B side…
Revisado: 03-04-24
Found the story interesting. Found the delivery excellent. Found insight, as always, rewarding. Think a lot are in the short stories, the B sides of her hits, that might not have made it into her greatest hits. All her stories are a great way to learn more about reality.

What intriguing skill at 24
Revisado: 02-06-24
I’d read it before, but hearing it and while reading along made this better. Anton has these tucked-away passages that take one by surprise. One hits the pause, then the back button flips back the pages and hears what they do. Only this time, since he was 24 when he serialized this story, it’s discovered this is a gift, a technique but not deliberate, but natural. This gift would frustrate some but be soul-food crumbs for others leading to want more. A gift. It would make sense he’d find a way to use his medical knowledge, other than his powerful powers of observation, to fit into a story. People say Chekhov was obsessively private, and with good reason. He was ‘odious’ to himself same as in here breaking hearts along the way, but he wasn’t without self-knowledge regarding it. All his rascalness made for good tales. People ask, who was Chekhov? Why he’s is this story, minus the murders and others as well. Screwy delivers for him this time as does the main character. Anton wrote about what he knew. He learned young and observed a lot, remembering well and using it even better. More please.

Most never see them coming
Revisado: 01-09-24
As a longtime reader of Ryan Green's true crime non-fiction uniquely altered to bring us into the story rather than a timeline, I've noticed something prevalent to the best FBI profiler authors also read, and that’s empathy for the victims. It's a testament to his respect for humanity that he keeps in the forefront the humanity of those whose lives were cut short. Cut short by senseless murders by criminals often awarded long lives, whereas those they killed weren't allowed.

Historia
This collection of short stories by Anton Chekhov are all set at Christmastime. Rather than depicting a sentimental image of Christmas, Chekhov paints a picture of the harsh reality faced by many of the poorer members of society during a bitter Russian winter, while still injecting elements of pathos and humour. This collection includes At Christmas Time (Parts 1 & 2), Vanka and The Shoemaker and the Devil.

His wisdom sneaks up on you
Revisado: 12-15-23
I adore Chekhov. You find yourself suddenly going, what did he just say? His subtle wisdom sneaks up on one when they’re least expecting it. It’s a talent few own. He’s one of a kind. A gem of a man worthy of reading, listening, re-reading and re-listening and then doing it again. Each circle reveals different highlights as one moves along in time themselves.

A privileged view
Revisado: 05-26-23
They say no to school. They say no to work. They want what we have. They try to cut corners but the corners are sharp, slippery, dark, ugly, mean. The storyline is humorously fraught with frustrations and insights. They say no to school. They say no to work. They want what they seem to think is an entitlement somehow. That if they come there, anywhere, that they can puck the gold from the streets and magically be transformed into an existence where school didn’t matter. I’m on the fence with this book, it was good, it jarred but as someone who feels we all need to start with school I have many issues within its content because we aren’t were we come from we’re a product of our choices. And school is the first. Typically books, rides to and from and a teacher is included for free. Start there. See what happens. This was a step outside his comfort zone and mine.

Factual fiction done well

And like they say the beat goes on. Few do it as well as Henning. There is an odd coincidence with though connected to his real life passing. It makes one wonder about our fears leading us to them.

Soul food for intellectuals
Revisado: 02-11-23
When you stumble upon or make an effort after watching something that touches your soul with both wisdom and simplicity one often sets out to find its original source. This is what I’ve done. Now, on to the next installment to fill in the blanks shows find impossible to share, but do so as best as they can, and capture much that couldn’t be placed into the varied versions, of which I’ve watched all, of the detective series.

Time changes little
Revisado: 02-01-23
Late to these but it’s amazing how little things have changed over the years. If anything, they, the issues that result in murder(s), are more pronounced and visible. Well-written with care. Their works are gems.
