The concept of the book sounded very interesting based on the title. The introduction also sounded very good. However, as soon as I started listening to the first few chapters of this book, it became immediately clear that their author was gonna drop so many Bible verses into the content that it was more about making religious connections than the actual content itself. It totally disconnects from Learning because he’s so neck deep in theology and lecturing. He’s connecting so many Bible verses that he’s not even getting to the heart of the book topic, which is the topic of relationship intelligence. Each chapter is so preachy, like a collection of sermons intended to force feed indoctrination. I wish I could get a refund on this book. The title is misleading. The preview is misleading.

There’s so much stuff bragging inside of this book where the author explains over and over his credentials and expertise on this topic. His life stories come across more like a humble brag, then an insightful epiphany.

After you weeded out all of the self aggrandizement, you see that there’s nothing inherently new inside of this book.

The book can be summed up as:
1. Make a plan.
2. Take steps to complete the goal.
3. Persist until you reach the plan.

If it all boiled down to these three simple ideas, I wouldn’t have purchased the book. It’s Captain obvious.

By chapter 2, the book feels like Bible study because every other sentence is talking about drawing a connection between relationships and the relationship to God.

This book should be titled or have an abundantly clear book description that makes it clear it’s going to approach the concept of friendship from a largely Christian based point of view.

Had I known that the author would utilize this book to proselytize the man-made fabrication that is the Bible, I wouldn’t have purchased it.

Short on solutions, big on explaining the problem

Both the introduction and conclusion of the book talk about how many people struggle to create and maintain friendships.

The takeaway advice is so simple— make the effort, be honest, be consistent, and make it happen. It’s not that insightful.

Example: people are busy. Can’t meet? Oh well, find someone who is more available.

I wish this book had more practical applications. It’s painfully emphasizing all the ways friendships fail to form or end too soon.

The book sounds like him ranting and raving about his ideas around what makes relationships successful and unsuccessful, but he does it in a taunting, condescending tone most of the time.

It almost sounds like a collection of ramblings he stiched together.

He sounds more like a bully than a wise man who has somehow mastered emotional intelligence.

He’s more cynical — than caring or compassionate.

Chapter after chapter, it feels more like a negative toxic vibe than uplifting or informative.

I get that he has a level of popularity and influence that makes his name somewhat recognizable, but after listening to this entire audiobook, I’m really disappointed by the quality of the content end of delivery.

If you wanna be spoken to in a condescending, passive aggressive way for 3 hours in an audiobook form this is it.

He sounds insecure, humble to a fault, and like he's bringing the confidence of an intern to the conversation, when he holds a PhD. If you just listen to the narration and the way the author talks about the concept, it's as if he's improvising what he's going to say. It sounds like rambling about personal things and jumping from topic to topic without a logical flow between ideas. I could only make it to chapter 3 before I realized, I could not appreciate the content, structure, or narration style. It's like a bad podcast episode, not a well thought out lecture. It's a darn shame because I love the ACT concept.

The one skill he encourages people to learn and practice is validation.

Eight chapters in, and it’s just example after example of what validation could sound like and the potential benefits.

However it lacks substance, and it has just a lot of filler content.

It is ironic that the author says he doesn’t like books with excess fluff and sure enough his own book has lots of repetitive content.

I also find that some of the examples on how to validate don’t actually validate the other person. It’s not validating if you’re hijacking the conversation to flip the focus to talk about your own relatable experience, instead of validating theirs.

This book is full of concepts that have been featured elsewhere in other personal development books.

Things like:
- Knowing how to prioritize
- Having SMART goals
- Eliminating distractions

I do not understand why this book has such high ratings and reviews when it has so much recycled content.

There’s nothing insightful or profound because it’s rehashing basic best practices you could Google for free online.

Lacks practical solutions

When I initially read the description for this book, I thought it would address specifically how to do smarter collaboration in the trenches of day-to-day working inside of complex projects and managing different team dynamics and personalities.

Instead this book seems to be positioned for HR professionals and executives who are trying to determine if they need to incorporate collaboration workshops as part of diversity initiatives.

Even within the topic of diversity, there are no specifics as to how do you handle discrimination in the workplace.

Because everything in the book is so high-level, it seems like an extended business pitch for their workshops where the juicy details and the how to do it is revealed.

This book lacks any kind of practical advice for how to manage team conflicts, managing one’s ego, or how to make collaboration more effective and efficient.

Collaboration can often feel like a waste of time because so little gets done, and this book introduces no solutions for that other than identifying the problem, as a problem.

Despite the glowing reviews, I don’t recommend this book at all.

Classic Indoctrination: Not Actually Useful

-Leave worldly pursuits
-Ditch your family and friends
-Embrace teachings
-Go to retreats
-Listen to religious role models
-Put faith above real world
-Put faith above everything else

At first I thought this book would actually hold some value pertaining to handling the mind, yet the first 4 chapters sound like indoctrination into any faith.

I don’t believe in karma, enlightenment, Buddha, many lives, etc. If you don’t believe in these topics, this book won’t be that useful.
