Historia
In the 1990s, a “purity industry” emerged out of the white evangelical Christian culture. Purity rings, purity pledges, and purity balls came with a dangerous message: girls are potential sexual “stumbling blocks” for boys and men, and any expression of a girl’s sexuality could reflect the corruption of her character. This message traumatized many girls - resulting in anxiety, fear, and experiences that mimicked the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder - and trapped them in a cycle of shame.

Truth
Revisado: 01-08-24
I started the book a couple years ago and immediately stopped at one trigger point. I just picked it back up and finished it now. it brings both a relief to hear something that validates your vulnerabilities as well as heartbreaking to acknowledge the time and experiences you've lost in life and can't get back. I wish I had not been so prone to black and white thinking and pleasing other people in the past. I think the Purity movement worked for those who found someone early in life. I'm still working through the guilt of dating someone outside of the Christian church and the fear of the intimacy process.

Historia
The orphaned Elsie Camden learned as a girl that there were two kinds of wizards in the world: those who pay for the power to cast spells and those, like her, born with the ability to break them. But as an unlicensed magic user, her gift is a crime. Commissioned by an underground group known as the Cowls, Elsie uses her spellbreaking to push back against the aristocrats and help the common man. Elite magic user Bacchus Kelsey is one elusive spell away from his mastership when he catches Elsie breaking an enchantment. To protect her secret, Elsie strikes a bargain.

two narrators make absolutely no sense
Revisado: 01-02-24
why are there two narrators?? it makes no sense to have two different people giving different voices to the same characters. it's confusing. also the editors did not make sure the two reading voices went well together. as other reviewers have said, the two readers read very differently. even if you don't like the male reader it might be better if the male reader is reading the whole thing so you don't flip back and forth. the other issue is that the male reader reads much slower than the female reader so the speeds are different. I wish they would take our suggestions and only have one reader. other than that the storyline is wonderful. it's very interesting and the characters have much better conversational flow then her other book I read. I ended up switching to reading the book for part of it and listening for other parts

great story. terrible romance
Revisado: 12-25-23
I thought the story was . I love the plot and the Mystery in the fairy tale. I would have fully enjoyed the book had it not been for the juvenile conversations in the romance. I kept thinking the book was written by a 12 year old boy based on the way the two romantic characters interacted with each other. I would love to read the rest of the series but the cringe-worthy interaction kind of ruins the enjoyment of the book.
